Just trying to point out people throwing out "my music is better than your music" is extremely tiresome. I fricking hate rap and hip hop, but I'm not going to claim that they are stagnant artistic backwaters just because I prefer other genres.

Unfortunately, it sort of happens to be true that guitar music is kind of played out. I like other music to hip-hop, it's just that nothing interesting is happening in those genres these days, nothing new or exciting. I have theories on that, but i won't bore you with them.

Firstly, to that snippet of article you posted, I call bull gak... just because someone is a donkey cave, just say it like it is... I am fething tired of people excusing donkey cave behavior by saying "ohh he has asbergers" or some other stupid gak. The actual cases of things like that are rare enough that it really shouldn't be on people's radar the way it is.

As to the first sentence there. I respectfully disagree... There's far, far too many times where I've overheard a rap song that someone else was playing on their phone speakers, or the radio, etc. and all I can think to myself is, "Ohh, they took Pink Floyd, retracked the drums and are talking over it" or "Hey, that used to be a song by Aretha Franklin or [insert artist here]"

To me, it is the absolute most LAZY genre of "music" from a creative standpoint. I won't argue with you about whether there's something "new" in metal, even though there is almost always band progression. Sounds change, styles change, etc. I would say the closest to a completely new sound in metal over the past decade would be among bands like Mastodon, or Gojira and Meshuggah. However, a lot of people brush them off saying, "ohh, Mastodon is just another Progressive Metal band" or "Gojira/Meshuggah are just "mathcore" all over again"

IMO, electronica is still the most "forward thinking" genre out there, especially given the rise of broken beat, dubstep, drum-n-bass, etc. Even the "classic" artists in EDM are being forced to change themselves stylistically beyond what they are known for in order to stay relevant.

Well, I've worked with autistic children previously, so I'm not just pulling out of my arse. I think he appears to have issues in that area. It wasn't an article.

Right, except sonically, hip-hop is using a lot of those same elements and actually making them interesting. Have you heard A$AP Rocky's album? Or Kendrick Lamar's last record? They are sonically very innovative. That you would characterise hip-hop in the way you did speaks to your ignorance of the style. Respectfully.

Well, based on your previous posts, that's pretty obvious.

To make an such a broad declaration like hip-hop being an absolutely "LAZY genre of 'music' from a creative standpoint" (complete with scare quotes and CAPITAL LETTERS, so we know you're super serious) is just so far beyond asinine. I don't know you, but I do know that you know feth all about making music based on that statement alone. Also, I have news for you... you can make any kind of music lazily, it isn't a phenomena unique to any particular genre. Are there "lazy" rappers out there using gakky beats and terrible lyrics? Hell yeah there is, and sometimes some of them get rich off it. But guess what, there are just as many lazy punk, or metal, or alt-rock, or indie rock, or jam bands (by the way, feth jam bands) out there doing the exact same thing. I can sit in my basement and write an awesome gloom metal bass line in between bong rips with minimal effort, that doesn't make me inherently "better" than a dude spending hours in the studio, mixing dozens of samples across multiple genres into a complex and coherent song.

It's one thing to not like a genre of music (there are lots of genres of music I can't stand), but don't sit there dole out blanket dismissals like your the Lord of all Music.

Just gave each a couple songs listen... I don't like Kendrick Lamar. At all. Doesn't sound very "innovative" to me either. Perhaps you could link a song that really showcases. A$AP Rocky is a bit better, but I'm not hearing this great innovation you keep talking about.

I distinctly recall in past music threads, some UK posters suggesting I check out Dan le Sac, and I thought it was quite good. I also have enjoyed Sweatshop Union (canadian rap group), as well as the "classics" from when I was a young lad in the Western US... so Dr. Dre, Snoop, Run DMC and GM Flash, etc.

Im not wholly opposed to rap as a genre, I just personally haven't heard this great innovation you're talking about.

Lazy music in other genres isn't news to me at all... What I'm saying is that there is a perception of genius with hip hop where it isn't there. This is coming from DJs who play remixed junk on the radio, or a certain segment of the fan base (remember when Paul McCartney was featured in a remix, and the internet idiots came out saying, "whoever this guy Paul McCartney is, he's about to blow up"? Yeah, most of us here on Dakka realize that those fans are complete idiots, but they are the vocal ones)

And please, don't assume that I'm knocking remixed music... I'm saying that you really have to dig deep, and cut out the Air Waves (AM/FM radio stations) playtime stuff, in order to find the "good" stuff. As was discussed earlier in this thread, country is going that same route. When you listen to a radio station and an entire hours' worth of music is about one of 3 subjects, it sends a message about the genre.

As I mentioned earlier, Tenacious D, a band I happen to like a bit of, won an award for "Best Metal Performance" for covering "The Last in Line" over 3 other, original songs (what may be more telling/sad, is that in the category 2 of the 5 nominees were covers), when personally, I think that one of the other bands like Motorhead or Mastodon should have won, because they were nominated for their own work.

I'm not sure I'm inclined to waste time going out of my way to try and help someone understand the sonic appeal of two of the most popular and critically acclaimed contemporary artists, when that person makes statements like 'there is a perception of genius with hip hop where it isn't there.'

I feel it may be a fool's errand. I respectfully decline.

Revisiting this for a moment... After more contemplation... I saw that it was in a "quote box" and this lead me to thinking that it was taken from an article or some other media.

I have only worked with one person in my adult life who claimed asbergers (this was in the army, and while the guy was slightly socially awkward, it wasn't above and beyond the norm for my line of work), and he wasn't a donkey cave... Sure, he had a seeming inability to pay bills and conduct certain other tasks that most people do by habit, but he didn't behave in any sort of "Kanye manner". But seriously, the guy would buy X-box games instead of paying rent/phone bill/car bill, etc. Which, when you look at a number of married 18-21 year old soldiers, isn't so far beyond reason. Which has, I will admit, shaped my view of people who claim Asbergers as an "excuse" for poor behavior. A large part of my disbelief in this guy's case is due in large part to a number of (usually) males who love to "One Up" each other... I've seriously heard just about every medical diagnosis in the book from soldiers, and it finally got to the point where I generally disbelieved all of them without further proof.

I understand, and have no reason to disbelieve you on your work with kids, and so if you say that this IS actually a "normal" behavior from people with Asbergers, then I am more inclined to believe you and it shades the soldier I worked with in a little different light.

I also don't want you to think that my asking what was innovative about A$AP, or Kendrick's new albums was done so in sarcasm. I have very academic leanings, and am ALWAYS interested in learning new things.

Kanye sucks as a human being and as a wannabe singer. Yes, you should feel bad if you like his "music". I use the term loosely. Best thing he could do for his child's same is sever his vocal cords. I must be maturing, I didn't suggest he should kill himself. He should just never speak again. The man is an absolute pox upon our species. Voice of our generation, my ass. I've shat out more intelligent organisms than Kanye. Beck should have given the award to Kanye: right across the face, over and over again until he forgot who he was. Violence: it IS the answer, in this case.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
