Subject: How Does a "Kanye West Rants about Artistry at the Grammys" post not exist yet?
Actually kind of does, what is happening outside of those genres (hip hop and pop) that is truly exciting? Like as far as rock goes I can't think of anything that's been great since the mid 2000's, maybe there's some real good stuff coming from other genres like jazz, blues, folk, country,
classical, soul, funk, reggae, etc but I have a strong feeling that's not happening either and is only finding any real relevance by being incorporated into more mainstream genres like rap, rock and pop.

Hip hop and pop music maybe, but that's a nice generalization you made there
Also I said in recent history as in the past couple of years, obviously in the whole history of music their are bands/artists that are much more important than him.

All fish know of Kanye
In retrospect, my example really set that joke up.
Also, one of the best South Parks ever, I think.

This I actually agree with... how the hell is it that Tenacious D can win in the same category as Mastodon, with a COVER SONG!? I mean, I kind of know why there's no "cover song" category, but how an something that isn't original win an award for damn near anything at the Grammys?

Slipknots new album was pretty damn good, and honestly, before this one came out I didn't like Slipknot. Cannibal Corpse has new stuff out that's really good.
There's plenty of new metal bands out there that are turning a few heads, like Anaal Nathrak, Xibalba... At the Gates is putting out some new, and quite stellar work. Machine Head has a new album, as does Suicide Silence and Napalm Death.
Basically, just because you listen almost exclusively to one genre of music, doesn't mean that there isn't great stuff coming out now. Honestly, within Metal, the ratio of "good/outstanding" stuff is about on par with rap/hip-hop. Personally, I hate rap and think that damn near all of it coming out now is crap. So, I could say that rap hasn't put anything great out since the mid 2000s as well, and you (and others) would disagree with me.
Folk and country, IMO are a bit "dead" because the genres are somewhat typically limited in nature. Sure, there's bound to be some new and exciting band out there yodelling in a new and interesting way about a cow, or a truck, but country/folk aren't my cup of tea.... And frankly, when did country musicians start dressing the same as rock guys??

Mainstream country music is pretty much just redneck rap anymore as far as I'm concerned. Every country song sounds the same and country/rap songs all have the same themes: Got my fancy ride/girl is smoking hot/gonna have sex with that girl/drink southern comfort/life is good.

I can enjoy and appreciate just about any genre of music, but I can't disagree with that.

I say the same thing about "Christian Music" it's pretty much 100k+ songs of "I love God"
There's NO artistry in that. To me, and this is MY opinion, art REQUIRES variety, in subject, style, etc. There's a reason why I still list Gorillaz on my favorite bands list, among the Slayers, Cannibal Corpses, Dio's, Interpols, etc.

I like me some Christian music but I won't disagree with that. There may be some variety, but in the end they are all worship songs.
I like the "Christian band making music" groups more than "bands making Christian music" group. I always enjoyed me some old school P.O.D. and other stuff like that.

Gorillaz was genius.

I listen to the Christian Rock radio station in my area (I'd rather listen to music, even meh music, than commercials) and it honestly seems to me that "Christian Rock" is more of a theme than an actual style of music. There's Christian Rap, Christian Country, Christian Alternative etc etc. But yeah, I think most songs really just sound the same, bar a few. I can only think of a few that really blew my mind.
I have no idea what it's called, but it's basically a version of "How Great is our God" that is sung in like, 7 different languages interchangeably. That one impressed me.
That's past tense.... Do you know something I dont know????
Just that there has not been an album in a while and that they went into self-proclaimed hiatus. There is talk that they might start working on something again, but as for now there is nothing in the works AFAIK.

The band is back together and working on a new album and presumably a tour.

I don't listen to country, and have never had any real exposure to it. I grew up on hip hop, being born and raised in the Bronx.
At work, we have Pandora on, and it's always set to pretty much the same stuff - 90s rock, current pop, or early 90s rap depending on who felt like getting up and picking a station.
Last week, we had a supervisor on days who put on country 2 days in a row, so I've heard 16 hours of country now. I was quite surprised by how true what you say above turned out to be. All of the songs were incredibly similar both in sound and in theme, and virtually all of them were about a farmers daughter or a truck or drinking (occasionally there would be a Johnny Cash song to break that up).

Some things to be aware of before discussing this topic:
This is already old news.
West walked up to the stage clearly in a joking reference to when he got up on stage to (justifiably, IMO) protest the award of best music video to Taylor Swift in the same year that 'Single Ladies' came out, an iconic video, innovative production and well-written catchy song. Beyonce should have won.
Why was asked why he did it in an interview that evening and went on a rant, for reasons including possibly all of the below:
Ye has Asperger's or is otherwise 'on the spectrum'. I genuinely believe this is what a lot of his behaviour is down to, if you look at his behavioural tics. I don't know if he's ever been diagnosed, mind.
The man was clearly under the influence of alcohol.
The Grammy's treating black hip-hop and R&B artists kind of shabbily is a perception that is abroad at the moment amongst fans and creators of those genres/styles, and has been for some time. As an example, Macklemore beating Kendrick Lemar to the grammy when Kendrick's album was not only the best hip-hop album of the year, it was the best album of the year full stop. A bona fide classic. See also the aforementioned Beyonce/Taylor Swift thing. Kanye West is not the only person that thinks this.
He was actually kind of right. Beyonce is a more important and relevant artist than Beck. I had no idea Beck had a record out, even. And I'm speaking as someone who has seen Beck in concert multiple times.
Hip-hop is the most sonically forward-looking music style around today. Most other styles are desparately old hat. I mean, has anything truly 'new' happened in metal in the last ten years? Did someone say indie-alternative rock hasn't peaked yet? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Yeah, I'm just going to say 'the 90s' and leave it at that, I think...
Kanye West is one of the most successful and talented musicians working today. He writes his own songs, can play a bunch of instruments... He is actually a fantastic lyricist, occasionally poetic. He also happens to be very influential and important as a record producer, and just to the style in general.
Kanye West likes Beck. In fact, he said 'I love Beck, he didn't have the best album this year though.' He didn't diss Beck on stage, he just jokingly made as if he was going to, which was well-received if you see the footage. Afterwards he gave his opinion, which is his right. If Beck respects artistry he should give his award to Beyonce because she had the better record that year. I wouldn't say that, but it's not unreasonable, particularly when you consider that West has done this himself onstage at the Grammys, when he gave Lil Wayne his award, because he felt Wayne deserved it more.
Beck being able to play a bunch of instruments and write his own songs does not make him a better or more important artist than Beyonce Carter-Knowles. I play more instruments than Beyonce. I also write songs.
Am I more important than Beyonce?

Well, for one Metallica has gotten more and more gakky.

The 90s? It reached it's peak popularity in the 90s, but musically it wasn't nearly as good as the alternative rock from the 1980s... not even close.
Hüsker Dü, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr, The Smiths, Pixies, My Bloody Valentine...
Beck being able to play a bunch of instruments and write his own songs does not make him a better or more important artist than Beyonce Carter-Knowles. I play more instruments than Beyonce. I also write songs.

I'm in the same boat as you and I was going to make a similar point in my first response, but I didn't feel like writing it all out.

Just trying to point out people throwing out "my music is better than your music" is extremely tiresome. I fricking hate rap and hip hop, but I'm not going to claim that they are stagnant artistic backwaters just because I prefer other genres.
