My very first army ever was Later Carthaginian.

If we're going that route....

Then my first army was a Karn force for Havok. My younger brother took the Nexus stuff.

First army I had resembling a legal force was a 2nd ed. Legion of the Damned army using their White Dwarf army list.

Before then I had a few random guys and/or used my friend's models on sunday beginners.

To expand on my previous answer as people seem to be posting lists.

A short while after going into GW for the first time (after myself and my brother were directed there by the staff in Woolworths in search of more Havok models. Nice lead in there! ) the original Legion of the Damned box was released. I fell in love with these guys almost instantly and their army list was released a month later in WD.

I distinctly remember having that squad, a rhino, a Dreadnought attempted to have done like the one in WD with a poor donated skeleton from some random board game on his banner. Various support models to make a devastator squad and a converted commander also made like the one in WD. A conversion which 12 year old me attempted to thickly brush undercoat in GW and the mananger, seeing what I was doing ran over and put it under the tap in the back room. After that he said if I did that again he'd get Jes Goodwin to kill me for what I did to his sculpt.

And that is the tale of Grimtuff's first 40k army.

Xeroxed WD pages as my codex. Biker Harley squad. Engineer with jump pack to be the guy from The Jetsons. Exo armor units, ancestors. My fav was my first vehicle, I converted a rhino into a Winnebego with party squats passed on top, kegs of beer from ral partha. Underneath an eldar a GW guy gave me who was being crushed under the front tread while back enter door had a runic spray painting "we break for beer, we break eldar."

It was the starter set in the 3rd edition with Dark Eldar and Black Templars. I was absolutely happy with it.

Same here. Dark Eldar was one of the first 40k armies I painted and built army lists for...but being required to glue ALL THOSE SPIKEY BITS ON! Arrgh! It absolutely drove me away from the model range. What were they thinking?? I switched to orks and Chaos.

Hey, yeah I know, Chaos is spikey too, but the spikes are already attached!

Not sure what edition I started in. I think it was early 5th though it may have been 4th. I was a young buck and only played once or twice before forgetting the game existed.

My first army consisted of a tyranid battleforce and old one eye. No idea what happened to those models, lost to the warp I suppose. Though I shudder to think about the "paint job" that they had.

Started with plastic space marines in RT (I remember DM'ing the Farm scenario) shared among friends. I dropped out somewhere in 2E after a rather humiliating defeat against chaos involving a lord on a juggernaut and pink horrors (I still only had the plastic marines from the boxed set at the time).

The first army I actually *built* was a Tau army - I bought the army back when Tau first came out from a battleforce box, but didn't actually play them until 6th edition.

It never ends well
