Holy Terra.

I've been wondering about this for some time: What was the first army you owned? I've been into warhammer 40k for a few years now, and have had a few armys (Space Marines, Eldar, Tau, Orks, More Space Marines, Horus Heresy Marines) so I thought I should ask. Also, what was the first army you used in battle?

My first army:

Orks 500p : Warboss, 8 Nobz, 5 Burnas, 10 Grots and a Wartrakk.

That was my (pitifully pathetic) first army. Please post yours!

My first “army” in the sense that it could be fielded according to the rules was Blood Angels. Captain and a bunch of troops, all built out of the RTB01.

We played 40k as a RPG back in RT, so had an odd collection of minis before anything looking like an army fell out.

Not at all legal, but...

15 Guardsmen and a Chimera, vs 10 Space Marines, 5 Scouts, and a Rhino (I was the guard, the Guardsmen died a violent death, but the Space Marines could not hurt my Chimera at all.)

As for my first legal list, unfortunately I do not seem to remember.

You say Fiery Crash! I say Dynamic Entry!

*Increases Game Point Limit by 100*: Tau get two Crisis Suits and a Firewarrior. Imperial Guard get two infantry companies, artillery support, and APCs.

My first list was a demo game with some friends minis. We played a 2v2 1000 pts per player. I had the Eldar sniper army from 3rd. I had the Avatar, rangers, pathfinders, a wraithlord and scorpions in a serpent.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

My first Warhammer 40k "army" was a bunch of nids I bought cheap: 3 warriors, some termagants and hormagaunts and some gene stealers. Didn't even have a HQ.

My first legal game of 40k was with a chaos list: Predator, Havocs in a rhino, two squads of CSM, 5 Terminators and a Lord. I only remember this list because I charged a hovering vendetta with my havocs and destroyed it with Krak grenades. Why didn't I just shoot the vendetta with my havocs? I don't know.

Like a lot of peeps i guess Ultramareens, started in the very first days of 3rd Ed.

Had Marneus, a Termi Libby, some termies, 10man TAc and 5 man TAC, 5 scouts, 3 bikes a Land Speeder,a Dread and a Rhino.

Din't really grasp the points systeme at the time, the limit for wargear in 3rd was 50pts for Sergents and 100 pts for Characters, but for some reason i've got it wrong, and gave every model in the army 50pts in upgrades...

So while the army was small, i had reached the 2000pts to be able to field Calgar( at the time there was a point limite to Special Characters).

Useless to say that my first 2000pts game din't go as well as i though...

Was impressed by Chaos Space Marines after that, and my Ultrasmurfs got slowly converted to the Glory of the dark Gods, and someone kind enough teached me about the points...

Chaos Marines, 3rd edition. (the bad one)

Chaos Lord, 5 Terminators, 12 Berzerkers, 10 Chaos Marines, a Dreadnought, Rhino, Predator.

It was glorious.

Space Wolves I think 1500?

Ragnar Blackmane, 10 man blood claw squad with power fist, 10 man grey hunter squad with melta gun and power sword, dreadnought with MM, terminators with fists and storms, bike squad with powerfist, Long fang squad with 1 of each gun (that's how they come it must be good right? At least they had split fire lol).

My friend brought orks from AOBR with a Deff dread and bikers and a couple other extra goodies and we had an absolute blast. Ragnars squad got shot to bits and he single handedly swept 8 ork boyz. The Deff dread got immobilized right on an objective and the Deffcoptas and SM bikes took each other out.

That game and my second (same list, came down to one SM and one CSM trading potshots at each other on the final turn) let me know this was the game for me.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

My first army was white scars. I started them when they did an "index astarties" article with special rules for them in white dwarf around 15 years ago. I still have them now, although I have lost all my original models

“Because we couldn’t be trusted. The Emperor needed a weapon that would never obey its own desires before those of the Imperium. He needed a weapon that would never bite the hand that feeds. The World Eaters were not that weapon. We’ve all drawn blades purely for the sake of shedding blood, and we’ve all felt the exultation of winning a war that never even needed to happen. We are not the tame, reliable pets that the Emperor wanted. The Wolves obey, when we would not. The Wolves can be trusted, when we never could. They have a discipline we lack, because their passions are not aflame with the Butcher’s Nails buzzing in the back of their skulls.
The Wolves will always come to heel when called. In that regard, it is a mystery why they name themselves wolves. They are tame, collared by the Emperor, obeying his every whim. But a wolf doesn’t behave that way. Only a dog does.
That is why we are the Eaters of Worlds, and the War Hounds no longer."

Had a really good Tyranid Christmas for my first foray into the game. I still have and use most of these models.

Hive Tyrant w/ Venom Cannon, Scything Talons, +1 BS, Extended Carapace, Flesh Hooks
Tyrant Guard
3x Warriors w/ 1x Venom Cannon, 2x Deathspitters, 3x Talons, Toxin Sacs, Flesh Hooks
20x Genestealers w/ Flesh Hooks
15 Termagants w/ Fleshborers
3x Ripper Swarms
10x Hormagaunts
1/2 of a Zoanthrope (those 3rd Edition models were friggin hard to put together for a kid)

I don't even know how many points that was. I just took my models to the table against friends for the longest while.

I don't remember for sure, but my first list that I remember with certainty was Orks VS Ultramarines and had a lot of proxying of models and breaking of the rules, and this is what I remember from it:

40 boyz (divided into 2 20-man mobs)
30-man Tactical Squad (crazy, I know)
Terminator Sargent proxied as Marneus Calgar

I won the game (I was playing Marines)
Very crazy game.

INSANE army lists still available!!!! Now being written in 8th edition format! I have Index Imperium 1, Index Imperium 2, Index Xenos 2, Codex Orks Codex Tyranids, Codex Blood Angels and Codex Space Marines!
PM me for an INSANE (100K+ points) if you desire.

I believe my first list that I could actually, legally field was a Nid force based off of the contents of the Battle for Macragge box from...whenever it was from. I added a squad of Warriors as HQ, and more gaunts so it was something like this if my memory is right...

3x Warriors w/ 1x Venom Cannon
10x Termagaunts w/ Fleshborers
10x Termagaunts w/ Fleshborers
10x Hormagaunts
6x Genestealers
I think back then Spore Mines were an actual FOC choice too, so I thin kI took them as well.

It did not do well at all, and I got frustrated after a while with it, so I gave up (I was quite young and impatient), sold it all and started a Guard army.

My first list was part of a progressive league that got me into the game at the end of 4th, begining of Fifth. Back when every champ had either a power weapon or a fist.

Chaos Lord with PA+PP
6 Plague Marines with Melta and Flamer. Champ with PF
8 Khorne Berserkers, Champ with PF
Chaos Dreadnaught (The extra crazy, kill your own guys all the time one) with TL Autocannon and ML.

My first list had Dark Angels with Tau allies. The Tau side had 3 Crisis suits, a unit of 11 Fire Warriors in a Devilfish, and a Cadre Fireblade. The DA side had a Company Master, a 10-man Tactical Squad in a Rhino, a 5-man scout squad, a Tri-las Predator, a Dreadnought, an Assault Squad, a Jump Pack Chaplain (not an Interrogator ), and probably more but I don't remember. This is also the list I took to my first tournament (I played Grey Knights, Daemon Flying Circus, and Orks that day). Lame army list I know, but I had a blast with it! Until yesterday that was the only time I ran Tau in a tournament in any capacity.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

First army? 500 p Fallen Chamions Formation v. Harlequins + DEldar Unbound. I creamed my cousin's squishy Space Elves Every time, since I sort of had a mini-Deathstar in my one squad with upgrades (Plasma Guns and Cypher), which had the combat capabilities to eat his charges, then run away afterwards and shoot the crap out of his Harlies before a different unit charged the same Troupe to finish it off. Of course, we then had a re-match where-in both of our entire armies got embroiled in a single Assault, it was just one charge after another XD. I love playing on tiny playing fields
