Well Nardole is going to be one of the companions in this upcoming season, and he's an alien who is neither a 20-something woman nor from 21st Century England, so that's something at least.
But yeah we really could do with more companions like Romana, Adric, Nyssa etc who aren't human, or companions like Jamie from the Troughton era (an 18th Century Scotsman) and Leela, humans who are from different Centuries to our own.

Yup.
They also need to find a new niche for The Doctor to occupy.
They're now 13 actors in, and all have portrayed him very differently, but without ever moving away from the core of who and what The Doctor is.
I daresay as time advances that's going to get harder to do - there's only so many bases one could cover. And that's when a variety of companions need to offer juxtaposed morality.
They have tried with New Who, and it's been a bit 50/50. Martha joining unit, and being willing to use the Oscar Hagan Key was a winner. Clara being a notable low point (far, far too smug as a character - for me it made her instantly unlikeable)
If they want a single companion, they need to remember what made Ace work.
If they want a group of companions, they need to remember what made Turlough, Nyssa and Tegan work as a group - all looked up to The Doctor, all saw flaws in the Doctor. He helped them, they helped him.
When Doctor Who works, there is no better telly

Sinking feeling, based on nothing, it'll be James 'I really don't see any appeal' Corden.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

Didn't he bog off to America and get a chat show, or was that some other offensively inoffensive "comedian" of similar ilk?

I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.
"Your society's broken, so who should we blame? Should we blame the rich, powerful people who caused it? No, lets blame the people with no power and no money and those immigrants who don't even have the vote. Yea, it must be their fething fault." - Iain M Banks

"The language of modern British politics is meant to sound benign. But words do not mean what they seem to mean. 'Reform' actually means 'cut' or 'end'. 'Flexibility' really means 'exploit'. 'Prudence' really means 'don't invest'. And 'efficient'? That means whatever you want it to mean, usually 'cut'. All really mean 'keep wages low for the masses, taxes low for the rich, profits high for the corporations, and accept the decline in public services and amenities this will cause'." - Robin McAlpine from Common Weal |

Plus hes already guest starred as a not the doctor character.
Kris Marshall, having just left Death In Paradise, is a name I've heard bandied about, just the right amount of off beat and low enough profile but with enough of a track record to see it happening IMO.

I learned just the other day that one person considered for the role of 11th Doctor was Chris Barrie.
Yes, that's right, Arnold Judas Rimmer was considered for the role of Doctor Who, and I can't honestly say I have a problem with that.

So had Capaldi.
In the same episode as Karen Gillan first appeared (not as Amelia Pond) in fact...

True, but it still isn't going to be Corden.
