Just breaking on the Beeb - Peter Capaldi has said this season of Dr Who will be his last.

I'm sad to see him go, as he was the perfect antidote to the Dishy Doctor nonsense brought in by RTD - a man I'll always be thankful for ressurecting Dr Who, but also curse for his lacklustre stories.

This was kind of a given. None of the new ones have done more than three series... I just hope his final series is as excellent as the last rather than as mediocre as his first... Though seeing what Moffat has done to Sherlock this year, I'm doubtful.

This is Moffat's Swansong though - and could it possibly be anymore self indulgent that RTD's sign off?

It is a pity. I liked him a lot in the role. He brought back some seriousness and curmudgeonliness that was badly needed after too much gushing.

The first series with Capaldi was blighted by the unwelcome continued presence of Clara, though.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

True. I always got the impression they had big plans for Clara, but it just couldn't translate. Didn't help the actress came across as overly smug.

Capaldi - single best Doctor since the unfairly maligned McCoy (seriously, check him out in Remebrance of the Daleks, a series which is ultimately the trigger for the Time War....) If I didn't have work tomorrow. I'd stick it on right now!

Also, Ace remains the best companion ever. Stone cold fact. And she deserves an actual send off.

Why shoehorn? Couldn't they just write a female Dr. Who?

I just hope Moffat goes with him. That man has singlehandedly ruined the entire series, despite writing my two favorite episodes.

This is Moffat's last series. That was announced some time ago.

Shame to see Capaldi go, but I won't be sorry to see the end of the sonic sunglasses.

It's weird that I'm surprised and not surprised at the same time...

I'm kinda surprised because I thought part of the reason for taking the year off was to allow some recuperation time for Capaldi.

Seems a bit of a waste if he was just leaving after the season anyway.

As for replacement, I think they will finally go for a female Doctor. I really do think Capaldi was a 'reset button' really, hearken back to the original series so they can then go and do something drastically new. And, of course, they've introduced Missy...

I've got to say though, I'm not looking forward to Bill, she looks like she'll contain all the worst aspects of Rose and Donna.

Didn't those things only appear in like 3 episodes though?

I could have sworn they were just put off to the side at the end of that season and the the Doctor suddenly had a screwdiver again at the beginning of the next.

He’s probably best known to the world right now as Q from James Bond. But Ben Whishaw has a varied stage and screen career, though I first noticed him in sitcom Nathan Barley.

And he is currently the bookies favourite to take over from Peter Capaldi on Doctor Who, with William Hill giving him 6/1 odds.

Also in the running at 8/1 are Richard Ayoade, Rory Kinnear and Rupert Grint at 8/1 – could he be ginger at last?

Ben Daniels and friend-of-Bleeding Cool Jason Flemyng are at 10/1, while Reece Shearsmith and Russell Tovey are at 12/1.

At 16/1 comes Alexander Vlahos, Andrew Scott, Chris Addison, David Harewood and the return of Matt Smith

20/1 has previous Doctor Who stars Billie Piper, David Morrissey, David Tennant as well as Idris Elba, Olivia Colman, Steve Pemberton and Tom Hiddleston.

While Rhys Ifans is a 25/1

And Alan Davies, Christopher Eccleston, Eddie Redmayne, Martin Freeman, Paterson Joseph, Philip Glenister and Stephen Fry are all at 33/1.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Craig are at 50/1

And rounding off the odds is James Corden at 66/1. Smithy!

As long as they don't bring in a female doctor for the sake of having a female doctor, they should just pick the best person for the role and go from there.

And Missy was absolutely awful. She was an abomination who shows exactly why we shouldn't have a female doctor for the sake of it, her personality was so vastly different from the Master that she might as well have not been the same character.

Missy was ace! Whatcha talkin' about!

And she should be different from the Master's that went before - the Doctor's personality changes quite a lot over his regenerations.

And anyone makes a better Master than John Simm. He was awful

Aw. Bummer. I actually liked Capaldi, even though the writing has been pretty bad as of late.

I don't really like the sound of anyone on that list...

I think my idea pick would be either Bertie Cavell (he played Strange in the BBC adaptation of Jonathan Strange And Mister Norrel and was pretty Doctory in that) or Sean Pertwee, who even without the familial connection I think would do a fantastic job.

Sean Pertwee is a good call!

Some might say he's too action oriented for the typically avuncular Doctor, but then so was William Hartnell - prior to Dr Who, he'd been typecast as a tough man.

Hayley Atwell would be great, isn't she leading on a new show though? - Conviction. Though, it wouldn't surprise me if that gets cancelled, the trailers I saw of it were a little... Hmm...

My thought process was, they're either going female, or open casting call. They probably don't want to go the same age as Capaldi, so probably younger, therefore 40's, early 50's. British, of course. And if they go for female... Well, the first name that popped to mind for that was um... Catherine Zeta Jones. Not entirely sure how I feel about that...

I want to see David Mitchell as The Doctor. Alan Davies might be good, but I haven't seen him do anything other than "himself' on QI and As Yet Untitled.

Richard Ayoade could be good, but I'm worried he has no range beyond his uber nerd, awkward style. He would have to push through that to get the right Doctor nerd feel.

Richard Ayoade has been very good and not nerdy in his travel series, however this like his gadget series is not proof of acting ability.
