Awesome!

Nice job sticking to it and getting them all finished. The force looks really cool and has a ton of character. Frankly, I am a little bit jealous of how you were able to stay with it and turn out a force in such a short amount of time. Good luck and have fun with the campaign!

Troubled By Non-Compliant Worlds

England

@youwashock, thanks, and I'm happy got it done after all the worrying I did throughout. Really the only reason I actually got it done in the end was because there was an actual deadline for the event. I've started a fair few armies before this without actually completing them purely because I had no reason to finish them beyond simply having a finished army.

What a weekend. What. A. Weekend.
By the Dark Gods last weekend was fun. I've only now had time to catch some proper sleep and have enough free time to write this up, so sorry for the delay, but hopefully it should be worth it.

First off, massive thanks to the GM for the days. He really did put a lot of effort into creating fun games that represented actual battles from the Badab War, following the campaign set out in the Imperial Armour books for Badab War, but bringing everything into 8th edition, alongside having to come up with reasons as to why all the sides were flipped around.

So how should I do this write up? Well it'll probably be best to start at the beginning (ignoring all the boring travelling too and from England). Day 1 (Saturday) started by everyone setting up their armies for each other to see in real life (for the most part. A few guys live together, so they already had a chance to see each other's armies, but I digress). It was awesome seeing so many fully painted armies (and a few maybe not-so-painted armies ), and the thought of going into battle with them was really exciting. But how can I say all this and not actually show you the very armies I mentioned. Lets start with the Secessionist. (expect a load of photos here)

Astral Claws, lead by the Tyrand of Badab himself, Lugft Huron

Alternate Universe Minotaurs, with a colour scheme surprisingly close to the Astral Claws

Exorcists (or at least a Leviathan Dreadnought and Chaplain from them )

Carcharodons, lead by Tyberos the Red Wake

And finally, Raptors, lead by Lias Issodon

So those were the 'bad guys' in this universe. Lets see the Loyalists!

The Red Scorpions, lead by Carab Culln

A particularly plasma heavy Star Phantoms

The fourth fully Primaris army, Fire Angels

A very nearly finished Lamenters, lead by a custom Malakim Phoros (and the GM's army)

And finally, and as I'm sure you'll agree, certainly not least, my Executioners, lead by Thulsa Kane

So with all the forces laid out, the only thing to do was to throw them at one another and see who died the least! In that regard, the GM kept record of how games went down, took pictures, and wrote up the in universe ending for the entire thing, which you can read below.

Spoiler:
Phase 1: The War of Shadows.

The Secessionists learned of a gathering of loyalist leaders on the world of Bellerophon’s Fall and sent the Raptors and Carcharadons to assassinate the leadership of the Red Scorpions and Lamenters. However Carab Culln and Malakim Phoros were able to fight their way clear and escape the ambush.

On the world of Sagan III the Astral Claws successfully destroyed a convoy that the Star Phantoms were escorting, the Tyrant of Badab being brought low several times but refusing to yield. Elsewhere on the world the Executioners failed to extract an Astropath under guard from the Minotaurs.

Meanwhile in the Endymion Cluster, the Fire Angels tried to gather intel on the Secessionists on Iblis, but were thwarted by the Exorcists as they deployed an Eversor Assassin to stalk the Fire Angels across the warp tainted world.

Phase 2: Tide of Destruction

A parlay between the Red Scorpions and the Astral Claws turns bloody and the Red Scorpions Lord High Commander Ortys is mortally wounded, but recovered and the Astral Claws driven off.

The Fortress world of Surngraad becomes a war zone as the Carcharadons savage the Fire Angels, and the Minotaurs experienced the indiscriminate and overwhelming firepower of the Star Phantoms.

The Lamenters and Executioners launched a joint raid on Vyaniah but were repelled by the Raptors and Exorcists.

Phase 3: The Bloody Stars

To spite the loyalists, Huron unleashed viral and chemical weapons on Sagan, the Fire Angels unable to stop him in detonating the bombs, resulting in the world dying.

The Red Scorpions tried to stop the Exorcists from raiding the Forge World of Angstrom but failed and the Mechanicus overlords of the world treated both interlopers as hostiles.

On the barren asteroid of Cocyran, the Carcharadons and Executioners settles who was the more psychotically violent out of the two. It was the Carcharadons.

Malakim Phoros and Asterion Moloc duelled as their armies fought around them. They were the lynchpin around which the battle was fought, and although Malakim gravely wounded Moloc, the Lord of the Minotaurs stood triumphant. But learning that the High Lords has been calling them and that Huron had been deceiving them Moloc withdrew his depleted forces, the Lamenters having taken a heavy toll on them. The Lamenters, likewise, were taken out of the war due to the immense casualties they had suffered and Malakim’s interment in the Apothecarion.

Using contacts amongst maelstrom corsairs, the Raptors descended on Cygnax to acquire supplies from its ancient jungles. The Star Phantoms attempted to purge them from the world but found themselves picked apart by the skilful marksmen of the Raptors.

Phase 4: The Palace of Thornes

The Loyalists lay siege to Huron’s Palace of Thornes. The Executioners storm the gate but are repelled by Huron himself, who falls to a point blank bolt pistol barrage that leaves him gravely wounded.

The Fire Angels assault the landing pads under the cover of a storm but are driven back by the Exorcists.

The Star Phantoms secure the plasma generators as they fight the Carcharadons, their high casualties being deemed “acceptable”. Tyberos was brought low by a shot from Reclusiarch Mortuary Chaplain Kasper Kage’s combi-plasma absolver bolt pistol, “The Undertaker”.

The Red Scorpions storm the gun emplacements of the palace, under protection of the Raptors. They are cut apart as they cross no mans land, but the timely intervention of Librarian Barachiel Arno, leading a handful of the surviving Lamenters, turned the tide of the battle.

The Palace fell into the loyalist hands but the war dragged on, neither side in a position to claim a victory as secessionists maintained strongholds across the Maelstrom Zone.

I'm sure there's a lot there that sounds interesting, but I'm now going to focus on the 4 games I had because, well, this is my plog

Game 1:
The first game had me up against the Minotaurs who were trying to keep an astropath out of my hands. For this we used one of the game-types from Vigilus, which required Sentries and the likes, with the Minotaurs setting a single unit up surrounding the Astropath, whereas I set my entire force up ready to get in there and kill them (and potentially capture the objective if I felt like it). the idea was that I would raise and alarm, and the rest of the Minotaurs would show up to defend the area. Unfortunately we were way too eager to play to actually read the rules for the game, relying more on some somewhat vague explanation from the GM (who also had to explain entire battles to 4 other tables, so no hate there). So whilst my turn was supposed to end as soon as I alerted the sentries, and the Minotaurs were supposed to gradually come in, needing a 3+ to come in first turn, what actually happened was that my entire force was in the centre of the table, was immediately surrounded by Minotaurs, and I was tabled by turn 3. It was only after that both sides of the fight actually had a chance to sit down and read the rules that we found out we had messed up. But I was so happy to finally have a game with my mates that it didn't really matter that I lost that fight (a story we will see continue throughout the weekend...). So game 1 was a loss. On to game 2.

Game 2:
This time I teamed up with the Lamenters vs. the Raptors and Exorcists. This game had 3 objective markers along the edge of the Secessionist's deployment zone, with victory conditions of the Loyalists gaining a minor victory if we held 1, and a major victory if we held 2 (anything else was a victory for the Secessionists). To balance this out a bit, the Secessionists only had 1 army on the table to begin with, so my teammate and I had all the time in the world (read until their turn 2) to take out most of 1 army. Unfortunately this game was cut short at the end of turn 2, as we had to be out of the lgs by 17:00, meaning I never really got a full game in against 2 people there. As for the game itself, we lost by literally 1", with the Lamenter's Librarian Dreadnought 4" away from one of the objective markers (in true Lamenter's bad luck). But again, a load of fun was had, as was the case throughout the weekend.

Day 2:
For the weekend, the GM and myself were sharing the same room, so we had plenty of time to discuss how day 2 would play out, based on the previous day. This resulted in a few changes, such as no more doubles (they took too long for how much time we had), and the final touches to the various games to be played, speaking of which...

Game 3:
Game 3 was one I was excited about from pretty much the beginning of the Badab War event being created, and my selection of the Executioners. You see, there's a battle that took place during the war that was known as the 'Lost Tale' of Badab. It was when, on a smugglers' base in the dust wastes of the forlorn world of Corcyra II, a nightmarish scene of carnage and destruction was found. There, a bloody battle had been fought between the Executioners and the Carcharodons, and this was my chance to recreate it. For this game, a few twists were in play. To put is simply, every single model had +2" movement, +1" advancing and charging, and every single last crazy, blood hungry mother-frakker on both sides had +1 attack. Our deployment zones? Touching one another, allowing us to get into combat incredibly easily on the first turn. The objectives? Kill, kill, and don't stop killing. The GM even had a few rules for certain units to make them better represent the in-lore units seen during Badab, with the Charcarodons having the Red Brethren, giving +1 attack to the terminator unit (resulting in 5 attacks each thanks to the game's twist), and I had the Headhunters, a unit that gained +1D to anny wound roll of a 6. The game was quite quick, with the shooting phase almost non-existent. At one point we had 10 different units in a single melee, which was basically what was left of each force at that point. In the end it was another loss for me, with Kane being booped by a Relic Contemptor before he had a proper chance to take on Tyberos and the rest of my army being killed in a beautiful amount of carnage. We did then decide to have a 1v1 of Kane vs. Tyberos, which resulted in Kane getting the kill he was looking for at the beginning of the game, but that was just an aside thing for ourselves and unfortunately for the Loyalist side didn't result in any change (we also went on to have a 1v1v1 with Malakim Phoros, his player having finished his game early. This matchup had each player go at the exact same time, and each model had 30 wounds. It was significantly closer, so much so that my belief that Kane just won out might actually be wrong, but we'll just say he did ).

Game 4:
The final game of the campaign, and something the GM and I panned out the night before. This time I was up against Huron and the Astral Claws themselves, fighting at the gateway to the Palace of Thorns. This was a fun game, where the Astral Claws had two objectives basically in their deployment zone, and I had to score more than them to actually win. ie if they had 1 and I had 1, that would still be a win for them. This turned into a right 'sloberknocker' to quote my opponent, with a large number of models right at the very gate itself. Here, Kane finally got a chance to be put to good use, taking out Huron almost instantly. However, Huron being Huron, he got back up, had terminators with thunder-hammers charge into the fray, and took out Kane before he could do any more damage. In the end, I finally actually played for objectives, capturing 1 with my Land Speeder. However, my opponent had captured the other, meaning I lost the game. Or did I... You see, this phase was a bit different to the others. Rather than the wins and losses of each game being added up, each table was actually playing the same game, which meant the number of objectives over all the tables was added together, resulting in a 4-3 victory for the Loyalists! Hoever, as I'm sure you've already read, this meant that over the entire weekend, the 4 phases resulted in a draw. So how do we sort this mess out? Well, sort of like this (it's not really part of the story, but it was a fun way to end the weekend)...

Game 5:
This game was simple really. Everyone brought their characters (bar Moloc, as his player unfortunately had to go home), and we had a Loyalist vs. Secessionist gladiatorial pit. We allowed the auras of each side to affect the side (ie replace <Chapter> with either Loyalist or Secessionist), and found out who would win in a big ol' fight. Tyberos started the whole thing off by immediately going for the Star Phantoms custom character, Kaspar Kage. Whilst I can't recall the entire fight, I remember throwing Kane at the Fire Angels custom character, Plessias du Vale, for stealing a kill, before Kane too was fairly quickly killed off by someone from the Secessionists. By the end, there was only the Red Scorpions custom character, Ilias Hirsch, left standing, which I'm sure you'll all agree means the Loyalists won the campaign

The final battle

Overall it was an amazing weekend. It was great seeing all my friends, many of whom I hadn't seen in the flesh in years. It was even better to get to kill a load of models that said people had spent ages painting, whilst also having many (read: 'all' in 2 cases) of my models being killed off too. Obviously the weekend didn't end at the gaming, with drinks and food had, and a general hanging out that we hadn't done in so long. I'm really happy we had a chance to do this, and if any of you guys are reading this (which I found out they have been when I got over there), thanks for the brilliant long weekend. And for those following along from outside the group of players, here's one final image showing all the leaders of each army all nicely lined up

To Badab War X

Now, I hear you ask, what happens next. Well, loyal viewer. We've done Badab War, which can only mean a sequel is in the making...

See you all for New Badab, New War: Into the Maelstrom, where I can finally flex my Chaos-y legs

The ruins of the Palace of Thorns

I am so jealous that you got to have a full weekend of Badabing. It looks amazing.

I am on my Eldar for another six weeks or so, then I think my next plan to will be to paint the Executioners that I converted ages ago.

Do you have any plans to repeat any Badab gaming, or does it feel kinda over after that aesome weekend? If any of you are in London, I'd be excited to use my Lamenters or Astral Claws against someone.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Posting as Fifty_Painting on Instagram.
