I think it helps that Gervais can keep a show to 12-14 episodes, rather than letting it drag on interminably and aimlessly with nine more seasons of tangentially-related content like a lot of shows from across the pond do.
It's a good point. For a lot of finales, there just isn't that much to work with at that point--the characters and situations have been wrung dry.
I'm not a fan of the finale of
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but considering how visibly run-out-of-steam season seven was at that point (You know the heroine who deals with monsters by hitting them?
Don't give her a final boss that can't hit or be hit by anything! ) they did a decent job.
