Stalker doesn't really stalk anything

Vindicator really doesn't describe anything, Sternguard same thing.

Hunter doesn't really scream AA defence

Riptide have nothing to do with water, devilfish isn't a fish, piranha is also not a fish, the onager is not a donkey. Geez it seems like some names don't match up and just sound cool. Sure you can get into the nitty gritty like how a Tau piranha is fast and should bite hard but it's just a name and I'm not gonna get that upset about it.

EVERY tau vehicle is named after aquatic animals. Litteraly the only name that makes no sense you mentioned is stalker.

Riptide and Hunter fit their units so well that I cant even bother to explain it to you.

Good thing others have already tried and cleared it up for you

Gathering the Informations.

Hunters and Stalkers are both Space Marine vehicles. They really don't actually fit the unit roles.

Riptides didn't fit the naming scheme as they're Battlesuits not vehicles.
Piranhas, Devilfish, Skyrays, Hammerheads, Razorsharks, Mantas, Orcas, etc are vehicles--not Battlesuits.

The only thing that bothers me about it is that there are just too many names and slightly different units.

Infiltrators and incursors are reivers with doodads. Why do they get special names? They should have just been reivers. Make their differences just upgrade options.

Dame with the three Repulsor variations.

Well, maybe not same as Reivers, but Infiltrators and Incursors could have certainly been just two options for the same unit.

I wish they had used less I names. That's my biggest issue, especially as they add more and more I units to the codex. Someone could be a motor mouth but I know what they are saying when they say tactical marines, assault marines, etc.

Half the units are some weird fake sounding I name.

So this is a really dumb complaint and I'm going to illustrate why.

Helion, Ravager, Wrack, Incubus

Harpy, Tervigon, Tyrannofex, Carnifex, Lictor

Retributor, Dominion, Exorcist, Celestian

Banshee, Fire Dragon, Guardian, Dire Avenger, Warp Spider, Dark Reaper

Basilisk, Wyvern, Baneblade, Chimera, Taurox, Manticore

Paladins and Purifiers

Vigilator and Prosecutors

Centurion, Hunter, Stalker, Vindicator, Whirlwind, Predator, Rhino, Razorback.

Yes, some of these fit their units fairly well, but none of them actually describe what the unit actually does or is. Which is apparently the big problem considering that Inceptor, Reiver, Repulsor, Repulsor Executioner, Infiltrator, Suppressor, and Hellblaster all fit their units very well but get whined about.

They have a bit silly naming conventions, but by the time I have finished painted them I have them down pretty well.

I don't know about you, but that Demolisher Cannon pretty much clears all blame or suspicion of heresy, along with the surrounding 10 metres adjaent to the heresy. Also, its a gun that very clearly says "I'm right, you're wrong and you know it."

Is very, very difficult to argue against this one.

With it's designated role as a siege engine- the Vindicator is what rolls up to an enemy fortress and blows the gates off the hinges. Once the walls are breached the battle is effectively over (as the marines pour through and gun down all within the defences)- the Imperium and its loyalists have been vindicated or proven right (through might) and the defiance of the heretic/xenos/mutant have been shown to be false and temporary.

You don't get that from a MkX helm.

The difference is that half of those units are vehicles that don't NEED to describe what they do, and the other half are Xenos units either named from human folklore or translated from Aeldari into Gothic. Even then, there is a consistant naming structure, such as IG vehicles named after mythological beasts - Valkyrie, Chimera, Manticore, Wyvern. All they need is a Unicorn motorbike.

Impulsor and Repulsor are really find, just boring generic names. Repulsor Executioner, however, has a real issue in that "Executioner" is a designation for tanks with a Plasma Destroyer turret - see the Predator Executioner and Leman Russ Executioner. It should have been called something else, must like how the Predator isn't called the Predator Destructor/Annihilator in its unit entry or on the kit's box.

Inceptors, Reivers, etc, are in competition with the other Space Marine infantry, which have a naming convention based on battlefield role. Assaulting, Terminating, Devastating, Guarding the Stern, being tactically flexible or being in the vanguard. Other armies, like Eldar, use different naming conventions bases on their Aspect. Tau and DEldar use their social class as a naming scheme. Tyranids are named by the Imperium as per their appearance - Hive Tyrants rule over the Hive like a tyrant. Carnifex is named for the latin word for butcher. Tyrannofex is an adaptation of Carnifex to include the latin word for Tyrant. Lictor - (in ancient Rome) an officer attending the consul or other magistrate, bearing the fasces, and executing sentence on offenders. Sounds like a perfect word for an assassin-creature. Genestealers literally steal DNA. Gargoyles and Harpies named for human mythology of winged monsters.
