Is this this first lieutenant figure? And one that doesn't directly match a model either, as he's wearing plain tactics armor while carrying a storm shield and power sword.

Yeah pretty much, only one of the newest Imperial Fist relases seems to not be directly based on a tabletop mini. For example - the guy with the pistol and fist is very obviously based on this particular Imperial Fist.

The Chaos lads look a bit plain painting-wise. I think they needed a third strong color apart from black and gold/beige. There's some red accents, but they aren't enough to break the greyscale + sepia tones overall impression to the eye.

There's... there's a Venerable Angry Washing Machine coming.
Now they have my attention...

When you get the box you'll find that there will be places moulded into the packaging where various options would have gone, had they not been taken away prior to release.

Cool. I'm ok with that. I'm glad the over the shoulder heavy weapon is getting a bit of love with the chaos side. I think they should be distinguishable from the loyalists more in the older classic style of gear that they use. Admittedly, the primaris have mostly fixed that potential issue though...

What's the normal loadout loyalists get and what do the chaos ones get? I assume they're charging a premium for these things so getting stingy on a few one piece, one or two color added bits would be silly.

We Munch for Macragge! FOR THE EMPRUH! Cheesesticks and Humus!
Note how the Imperial includes helmeted and unhelmeted head options, weapon options, plus stuff like little tech things. Only Chaos Terminators come with the head options so far.

I received my GW order for the first eight figures, and I am sold. These are amazing! I wish GW would offer the whole range, but I went ahead and ordered additional figures from a third party.
It took 6+ months to get here from the day I ordered. I had two locked joints, both upper arm swivels. A little force made them rotate just fine. The figures themselves are not nearly as stiff as the McFarlane ones, which makes me far less worried of breaking them. The paint work is very good. I had one holster that received a splotch of metal where it shouldn't be, but you get multiples of those (with and without guns) so no biggie. I noticed that the Phobos armor right shoulder guard looked off in a lot of pictures online, it was sitting too far away from the body, creating some unsightly gaps. I was glad to discover that it's not an issue. The shoulder is on a joint that allows it to be posed just right in any position of the right arm, you just have to push it in.
These figures were NOT blind pack, like in other regions. The individual boxes clearly indicate which figure is in them. There were no cards included (in other regions each fig had a card about the character, in Chinese, I believe).
This is going to be one expensive hobby, at the rate these come out, even if I am only interested in the Ultramarines for now (when Orks or Necrons come I will probably give in)
These figures were never blind packed with cards. You're thinking of Space Marine Heroes, which were actual 40K models not action figures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-atS82ZRx0 Here's an unboxing where you can see the blue silhouette with giant "?" on the blind boxes (0:13), and the cards on top of the plastic inserts when they open the boxes (0:19). The Games Workshop boxes do NOT have the question marks in the silhouettes, but, instead, a picture of the actual figure in the box.
I think it was only the original 8 figures that were packaged in blind boxes like this, and. while the individual boxes don't show what's in them, you do get one of each in the 4-pack, so it's not all that blind in the end...
Yeah, they were definitely sold as 2 complete 4 packs even outside of the GW sales(HLJ and the like). The only individuals I'd seen up were sellers breaking apart sets post them being out.

Was that an early review edition?
If so, would it not make sense to have a generic box rather than the finished example to sent out to the key reviewer partners early?

From what I understand, they're available in single figure blind boxes in China.

That was my understanding as well. Either you buy a box of 4 and know you get all of them, or you buy a single one and you're left guessing. I don't think the model was continued though, and newer releases seem to be packaged in marked boxes, so you know exactly what you're getting, even if you buy just a single.
