I don't know if anybody would describe the box art for 2nd and 3rd ed. 40K, or Epic as 'messy' or 'scribbled'..?
While his painting style isn’t the same as his more common drawing style—are we seeing the same box art? Could you please post pics of what you’re talking about, because when I googled those boxes, I found the images I remembered. I found a riot of space marines flanked by a vomit of enemies against a hazy, poorly defined background of impressionistic gothic terrain with streaks and explosions sneezed haphazardly across the midground. The images were beyond merely cluttered. They were messy.
Now, I’m not using that word as an insult, if that’s what you think. I am using it to describe the difference between the chaotic vitality of his artwork and the relative clean sterility of the 3D sculpts.

A big miss on all fronts for me.
As conceptual sketch artist sure the artwork style fits but Im not a fan of that technique for anything else. I mean also from that time theres other GW artists that evolved massively and developed their skills to a much higher level.
As for these sculpts well, welcome to more sterile digital things.
Neither the artwork or the sculpting matches and like I said it misses my mark on both extremes of the balance.
Amazing really.

I think if he wasn't personally attached to the project, then fair enough. But as he is, I do think that greater fidelity to the art is a reasonable expectation. The parallels to the sculpts based on Ian Miller's work are apt-they look like this drawings. These don't.

I think Blanche's personal involvement cannot be understated. He's retired from GW, he's had health issues the last few years and this, along with the Voodoo Forest books, may be among his last projects.
But obviously no one should buy anything they don't like.

The project looks like translation of Blanche characters into current day GW-style digital sculpts. If it would be communicated that way, I guess no one would have any problems.
I expected more "blanchitsu", shame that creator goes the safe route.

I don't think they chose the right sculpting style to capture the appeal of the artwork.

Yes, such a shame that the project is a complete failure and nobody backed it. /s

It was always going to fund well being endorsed by the man himself; people will back it for him, not just for the models.
I don't dislike them at all, I am just surprised at how different they are from the artwork, with Blanche being a part of the project.

I backed and will be picking up some of the stretch goals. I'm confident I can paint them messily enough to recapture some Blanched qualities.
FWIW I have a few Zealot minis already and the quality is incredibly high. I'm confident that these will be crisp, clean, detailed casts.

Again though that comes back to the intent; these are meant to be actual miniatures, not just a 3D version of a 2D artwork. This need to denigrate the medium for intentional design choices is really tiresome - if they were sculpted physically by a competent sculptor they would look exactly as these do because the brief would be the same.
I absolutely do not believe that. There is room for stylistic choices and artistic intent when creating a physical miniature. The sculptor of these miniatures has shaved off everything that made them Blanche art. The interpretation of the art is bad.
You're simply wrong, but there's evidently no point in me trying to convince you otherwise if you can genuinely, sincerely believe that it's not possible to produce art digitally, or to work to a brief without accidentally creating a masterpiece of SOVL with physical media.

People forget that the man himself is a gamer as well as an artist, and that a lot of the models he makes for games will be based on GW models. I don't see it as incomprehensible that he could recognise the - evidently substantial - potential market of people who like his *ideas* but could stand to see them executed as practical gaming pieces rather than just shelf-warming art projects.

Don't forget also that he was the artist director of GW for how many years? Those models could easily have been done inhouse at absolutely any point that they looked at the inquisition line if he'd wanted. The very fact that they are being done outside of gw when he could have had them done from the inside would make me think that something truer to the art than the gw range would have been the end result. It's not an infair or unreasonable opinion for people to have. It's also not personal, and shouldn't be taken as such.

Indeed; its success speaks for itself. I will be very interested to see them painted once they are out in the community.
