Knightley, your GKs just get better and better. The faces are obviously outstanding and I'm still loving your pail grey color scheme. Do you ever run out of ideas for the icons you draw with the micron pens?

@a_h_d - Thanks, I guess my next question is how long have you been painting for? I've had a brush in hand for a long time, but really only gained skills this year. The mark on the guys robe is writing on the other side, nice try however keep an eye out there might be one coming up, there might not. You never know.

@LDP - Cheers! Yeah I'm going in on Saturday, not sure what time though, models have to be in by 2:30 right?

@Miss Dee - Can't say I know what a gibbs slap is. I understand one of those words, so I'm sure he should decline ;D

@Graven - Agreed and a nice chance to add some different colours and techniques (OSL, Weathering) to a different style of model will be cool as well.

@Tipios - Course, if anyone supplies me with another army idea I could try my hand at that instead (idea's welcome)

@Moltar - Thanks mate! I usually have 3-4 ideas when it comes to micron squiggle, I have a diamond with writing surrounding it, a black sword (there are 2 different types of sword to draw) a T looking icon with another tail and the squad marking. so those combined with random scripture squiggles should leave me with plenty of options and hopefully spread it all around

Update: last guy in the half done. I tired mixing yellow in with burnished gold and doing the demon hair with that to see what would happen, its OK, probably wouldn't do it again. I think I may have to tidy up the highlighting on the robes on this guys.

C&C welcome of course!

Pretty fantastic looking group of marines there my friend. You should be proud. However you do your squiggles and markings they really work and add significantly to the feel of your figures.

@LDP - Mint, i'll see you there.

@Gits - Thanks Gits! I am proud and will be chuffed to bits once 90% of the army is done, at this rate that could be may next year god willing

Update: Another try at a Quick and Dirty face tutorial.

First Stage, base face with Tallarn Flesh and give the face a good bath of Ogryn Flesh wash. The aim here is to have the wash pool in the sunken sections

Second Stage: this is just a strait dwarf flesh layer (plenty of water) focusing on leaving recess with the Ogryn wash showing, areas such as around the eyes, around the forehead area, bits beside the mouth and little bits on the nose.

Third Stage: this is a 50/50 mix of Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh, this stage is aimed at raising the lightness of areas where the sun would hit, so cheek bones, top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brow region , lips, chin, the aim here is to have the first layer not totally covered up by the new mix.

Fourth Stage: This stage is just pure elf flesh, The aim here is to paint raised edges where the sun would hit it the most. This includes areas such as top of the head, bridge of the nose, eye brows and cheeks.

Fifth Stage: Eyes were done at this point, using a 000 brush I did the white of the eyes. Then with the same 000 brush for the pupil of the eye.

Hopefully this is a bit easier to see with the cropped pic's

A brush....?? :p

Well once many years ago I 'painted' but that now looks like ive just dipped models in chaos black, thickened chaos black....

But now, been messing around for maybe a month and a half now first with silver (EVIL!!!!!) and now with grays (theft I know, but its so much more fun )

And I shall keep my (inferior and mostly blind) eyes open haha

@Gits - Your most welcome, any words on how to paint a dark skinned face?

@Tipios - No worries, are you going to throw some skinned faces on your dreads now? Hopefully you will and I can see if the guide works

@a_h_d - Have no fear I also 'Dipped" my models when I first started out, I honestly think I painted with a house brush at one point in time. If you're ok with feed back I'm more than happy to post comments/encouragements on your blog (it certainly helped me pick up my levels)

Update, working on the Biker body at the moment:

First coat of grey, you can see on the clear should pad that some of the grey is quite see through, it gets covered up in the next coat (you can also see it on his knee pads

Second coat of grey, here you can see almost 100% of the see through grey has been covered and shows a nice smooth coverage (apart from one elbow joint, ill fix that)

In this one the grey got their highlight and the reds were added then edge highlighted then normally highlighted (chest eagle is a good place to look)

Also got back from the FLGS GW painting comp, entered 4 models all made it through to the next round (single model - Paladin Apoth, squad - Tac squad 2, MC - Dreadknight, vehicle - ven dread) there was a fantastic FW chaos dragon which was entered into the open category which blew my mind! saw LDP get through with two of his models as well! NZ representing, the nationals will be on next weekend, so that should be 'interesting' I think I'll be struggling to make the cut on some of the category's I entered.

@Gits - Cool, I figured it was going to be in there somewhere however at 210 pages I wasn't relishing delving through it to find a tutorial

@a_h_d - Yep, there's plenty of Dark angel parts spread through out the bikers as they are the only ones who provide conversion options.

@LDP - Cheers, your captain looks particularly good up close with out a camera as well, I believe you should do quite well!

@Count - Happy to provide! welcome back btw I noticed you had disappeared for a while.

Update: I did a mammoth painting session yesterday (because it was raining horribly) and finished of the bike.

Yum...

All great. Especially love the ravenwing feathery pole.

Criticisms: drill the exhausts maybe? And maybe some weathering around them and the tyres?

I do have 1 skined face to do, but he is nurgle so will be green

Bikes look very crisp, you just need some drills

Only real fault I see is the front edges didn't line up when glued, but looks like that is the moulds fault.

inmygravenimage wrote:

This! Just use normal drill bits and it should be easy to find one the right size. Be sure to make a pilot hole first if you do though, the bigger drill bits can be a bit hard to control when hand drilling.

tipios wrote:

One thing I found helped when doing my bikes was filing the surfaces after they were assembled and glued. The filing will get rid of most of the mismatched edges and the filed bits actually work as a "filler" to smooth out the gaps.

@Graven - Gah the return of weathering! it's a serious pull I'm trying to avoid for this army, I really am. Will have to check out my local hardware store for a bunch of drill bits, all the ones I have are getting dull now (drilling metal barrels....)

@LDP - Cheers!

@Tipios - You could try the same ideas with a green face, the base, wash, first, 50/50, top ideal and see how it goes? And snap you got me on the lining up. while painting it I was kept thinking there is a huge edge on this part.... no one will notice surely.... damn.

@Eggroll - Oh wow, thanks for the comments Eggroll! I have to say I'm quite honored. I'll make note on the pilot hole first for when I get bigger drill bits. and I really should have filed the front when I was in build mode, shocking as I've been trying to get them all recently.

Update: work is progressing on the Adeptus mechanicus terminator.

All parts have been base coated and washed, metals included.

To see what I could get it to look like I finished the should pad first

I'm happy with how it came out. What say all of you?

Yep, I got some feedback from my LFGS GW who said some of the gold were a bit flat, he had suggested trying mithril silver as a highlight and after trying it on the paladin apothecary I was happy with the results. It's time consuming though, each letter and only the top part. I think I ended up having to take a break when I had finished one half then came back for the other. Stoked you like it btw

@Graven - C-beamer incoming! parts list? the arm is a deathwing assault cannon trimmed down, the barrel is plastic tubing with guitar wire on 4 edges. A purity seal thingy to hide some of the cutting mistakes I made. the business end is from a tank mounted missile launcher trimmed down to only have the missile and the round end showing. The 4 nozzles are from tau flamers. mix in some eggs and a little bacon grease, and you end up with a c-beamer look a like.

@LDP - Ah, I didn't know you were waiting for this one? has anyone else got any specific models they are waiting for me to start?

@Gits - Pioneering new techniques/styles I wouldn't have thought it would be me

@Tipios - I will be keeping a closer eye on your dread thread (hahah, that rhymes)

From this

To this - however there is still the blue to finish off.

I am interesting in what kind of pattern I should do with the blue part of the barrel, I was considering doing either lightning from one end to the other, or shading it from dark at the top to light in the middle to dark at the bottom. and one got any ideas?

Something... different. Sorry, that's not terribly helpful, is it?! I guess I mean it should different from anything you've done for energies elsewhere. Does that make sense?

@Graven - It did actually help, you had mentioned energies which got me thinking about different methods of conducting energy. I was thinking more lighting till I spilled some water and wished I had a hoover thing to suck up the water (turns out a tissue was quicker) With the hoover thing in mind I though why not have the energy hoovered to a point, trialled some sketches on what it could look like and was pleased with the results (below hehe)

@Gits - Sounds like a plan, I'm just looking for some Capt'n Morgan transfers now, once I have that.... sorted.

@LDP - Ah all good, here I was hoping people were waiting for specific models to be painted (similiar to Stoned_astartes wanting to see the pred/razorback in more detail)

Update: as with Gravens help, more energies have been harnessed. The intent was to get the energy being sucked into a line to be fired out of the beamer.

Also finished the head

Thanks for reading
