So, where are the Wolves at circa 7th edition? Our Rune-Priests got nerfed into the unholy ground. Where does that leave us?

I'd like to see lists. What can you guys throw together that gives the 'ol Wolves a fighting chance in 7E? Allies are on the table.

I feel that with the advent of the new mission system and objective secured, running a Grey Wolf heavy list is very efficient for us. You can easily fit 6 blinged out GH squads with WG squad leads into a 1500 point list and have points left over for other toys. That gives us a lot of flexibility toward handling objectives.

The biggest concern I have for SW's is, what's our go-to killing power now? Long-Fangs are as good as ever, but I'm not sure how reliable they are against the vehicle-heavy/deathstar riddled world we live in.

Thoughts?

Lots of Grey Hunters in drop pods. Throw in a Wolf Priest and some combi-plasma Wolf Guard in a pod. If you're feeling nostalgic, fill out the rest of ML Long Fangs. Pretty much everything else in the book is overpriced, terrible, or both.

Now that pods are scoring a drop pod loganwing with combis is our best change

"Listen closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."Leman Russ

I've been wondering this myself actually. I used to play Loganwing, but with the upgrade to vehicles (being slightly harder to destroy than they were in 6th, and ironically maybe a bit more reliable than they were in 5th imo) The way to go might be the good ol razor-spam, where you take in addition to your MSU grey hunters about 9 Razorbacks, not to mention 6 of them will have that beautiful new rule "OBJECTIVE SECURED" on an AV 11 tank

Yes, Rune Priests did get nerfed, but all marine psykers took a big hit in 7th. Your best bet now if you wanna defend your units is go for Wolf Tail Talismans. I've been combing through the FAQ and it seems like they still work the same way. Rolling a single 5+ is much easier than rolling as many 6+ as your opponent got 4+. Don't get me wrong, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs, TWC, these are all still fantastic units, and I think the Space Wolf armies will start to focus on them, and maybe even drop the rune priest all together. While the Priest can technically be made into a close combat monster, he requires too many points to be effective at that role.

I've been doing really good with drop pod assault. I equip my grey hunters with as many flamers as possible for anti-infantry and overwatch, throw defensive grenades when I can, and pop things open with my long fangs. Thunder wolf calvary also can be useful for support where I need it. Ill try to post my usual 1500 point list in a little bit

That pod list looks about right to me, and its the right philosophy for SW this edition. Get up close, unleash hell. You also have the correct number of drop pods. I think also having your units kinda close ranks is a good idea as well, because of the change to multi-charge.

Also, I love the wolf-standards on everyone! Its a nice touch and it gives you some added boosts in those assault phases.

As far as the psychic phase goes, it seems to me like the general strategy is "Wait for your opponent to cast the one power you don't want to happen, and try to dispel that one."

Drop pods can fire deathwind missiles now upon landing. I will try packing these on every pod in a 3-5pod list and see how it fares. Anyone tried this?

I've tried it once, but don't think it made much difference if memory serves me well. I think its best to hold off on those because its saving saving you 60-100 points

if you're already taking drop pods, it's not a bad investment, as noted in another post, it has roughly the same punch as a whirlwind, minus the range and AP. if you're taking it JUST for the deathwind launcher, points are better used elsewhere.

Dark angels 70/100 of deathwing, 50/100 ravenwing, 80-100 3rd company
IG +6k pts

Deathwinds are great if you plan on disembarking one way and firing the other. They aren't good for flank drops.
