So I was having a discussion with a friend about where the 'Nids came from, and we figured out that this has to be the two options given their behavior. Which do you guys believe is more likely and why?

Given their underwhelming tabletop presence I'm going with running.

Well, seeing how they're depicted as the great devourer and fluff-wise they're unstoppable(every victory against them was basically a desperate effort to hold back a small tendril), I think their migration is simply because of the fact that they just ate everything in their galaxy and spread over to others.
More so, remember how it's said that all those gigantic hive fleets are just 'fingers' of a 'hand' that's going to crush and devour the life in Milky Way galaxy? Well, in my opinion it's one of -many- such ultra-hives that got sent in all directions towards nearest galaxies once there was nothing more to eat as it's quite unlikely that the -whole- Tyranid race would risk so much heading for just one place that might not even be worth devouring due to low amounts of life.
Despite their Codex being fairly baddish they're pretty much the most powerful race in 40k. Would love to see a hive fleet venturing into the Eye of Terror.

Devoured them. Us Nid lovers still hope....
But realistically the Dex says they have devoured 12? Other Galaxies.
What they faced there threat-wise is unknown. Could be just proto planets with microbes as enemies.....
Or we are the last Galactic bastion. Fascinating imho.

The nearest equivalent-sized galaxy is andromeda; about 2 1/2 million light years away. If they're moving at sub-light speeds, that takes some serious forward planning! They must set their sights on the next target galaxy shortly after arriving at a new one.

They devoured it. They aren't really known for running.

Personally I think they are coming back for vengeance, coming back to finally kill the necrons and C'tan. Along with getting rid of their failures.

Everything I say, barring quotes and researched information, is my personal opinion. Not fact.

I like to think these are just renegade hives, running from the main hives due to having developed their own hivemind, seperate from the main. Or possibly created through genetic experements gone wrong by another race in another galaxy. Chances are slim, but its still a cool thought.
