Hi,

Been away from the hobby for much of the last year due to work and family commitments - I understand that WD is now only available from stores weekly and that the only subscribable publication is Warhammer Visions - is this true?????

Visions seems to be an absloute pile of ....dross a load of photos with less text than The Sun????

Pretty much, there is an ePub version of White Dwarf (now officially White Dwarf Weekly) for download, but It does suffer from the appalling spacing and formatting that all GW epubs do.

The upside is that WDW does, at least partially, capture some of the spirit of the old magazine from when it was good. Not in huge quantities, but it is worth a read most times if there's a model release that's relevant to you.

But I have to go to a store to buy it????? Like I have that much time in my life! This is what annoys me about GW I know all they want is sales, they know that I know all they want is sales but it would be nice to pretend that there is something else.

As mentioned, there is a digital version, which I think you can subscribe to. (I could be wrong - I gave up on White Dwarf a long time ago.)

How do we know that it is?

Anyway, WD is still good as long as you are interested in the latest releases and it even includes some rules (make sure to pick up the one with looted vehicles if you play Orks!) Warhammer Visions is a can of garbage, easily replaced by any one of a million painting blogs/websites.

Warhammer Visions is very cheap to produce.

All of the pictures have to be shot for codexes, packaging and other marketing reasons. They don't cost the magazine anything. There is almost no text. Although the text has to be translated, a lot of it no doubt gets used in the codexes and so on, so not much expense there.

GW only really have to pay for the layout, repro and printing. Let's say one layout artist on £25,000. I am not in touch with modern repro and printing rates but I know it has got cheaper relatively than it was 20 years ago.

The biggest expense must be printing and pulping a lot of copies. The cover price is quite high though.

How many pages is it?

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

I doubt their layout guys get anything near £25k.

The White Dwarf as we all knew it and loved it is dead.

The new WDW is nothing but a "this week's releases" product catalog that you pay money for, with the occasional 4-6 pages of interesting stuff thrown in (battle report (worse than they ever were in the big WDs), fluff article or paint splatter).

The much costlier Warhammer Visions only serves one purpose: inspiration.

Wait till they release the one centered around your favorite army and then buy it. I waited for #4 (AM) and so far havent regretted it.

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

If everything is done in house then the cost is much lower. As I am typing this I have to chuckle a bit as I am contemplating going back to some of my IP's and do a Webzine first. But you know.... most likely I'll be doing.... Plushies!!! I'll find out after August on what I am going to invest in.

Just wish GW would put out a quality product and not this BS they call a magazine/e-zine. So I could buy it.

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

I can happily say that usually there are multiple back issues lingering around at any given store so you may not have to go visit weekly.

As others stated if there are models that pertain to you; it can be pretty good, the rest, um, er... is drek.

The WD is a blatant attempt to get you into the store and hope you buy their models, I only wish they priced it as such.

Visions, is nice but as pointed out seems to massively recycle rather than make new and I have trouble with the price.
Going to the Dakka gallery or CoolMiniOrNot does more for the hobby by far.

I now am pretty calm about what GW does; they make/price something that seems worth it I buy it, if it is garbage for the price I do not.
With my money I contribute that tiny bit to them doing the right thing; it is like voting but never being sure who won.

I've bought like, three of four of the new White Dwarf. I don't have time to get to a gaming store each week, so I stopped bothering.

I just read someone else's version of the digital edition for free. Well, most of the time, I don't even get around to doing that.

I didn't miss a copy of the printed White Dwarf (despite the decline in quality) for 20 years.
