I want to make a squad of 5 - 10 rough riders. My current army no longer has any but I cant bear to go a full year without them haha.

So I want to hear some unique or interesting rough rider ideas anyone has. Im not limited by anything except availability. So it doesnt have to be GW or anything.

Originally I was gonna use some terror birds but I have been waiting a long time for them and the company hasnt got round to finishing them.

To be clear its just the mounts im after. The riders will be Praetorian.

DKK rough riders are nice and can be gotten cheapish.
I like WHFB DE Cold Ones for rough riders too which is my plan for rough riders, though it's pretty pointless fielding them statswise.

Yea I considered those but I want some real wow factor. Something people would never expect when you say you have rough riders (within reason).

Like armadillo riders or, well something. Preferably with some models available.

Mantic makes them. I have 10 of them from their Kickstarter I can send your way if you settle on them.

if models could be found, I'd say giraffe or zebra would look good with Praetorians. Zebra easy as it's just a paint job on regular horses.

Giraffe is a very interesting one. Although the long necks could lead to disasters in transport.

Zebras I could do but I think it lacks the wow factor.

Definitely unique though. haha

The praetorians would look great on giant birds, like chocobo from final fantasy, finding the models however I have no idea..

I play a DKoK cavalry list using undead models. They're basically all the dead Kriegsman from a battle brought back to life by chaos.
For the Rough Riders I use the Hexwraiths, with the Death Riders and officers using Black Knights. It looks good and lets me play 2 armies with the same models!

I like it. I could do the same with my Lizardmen cold one riders (my army has mercs so will fit fine) but unfortunately I have seen so many cold one rough riders I dont feel like doing it.

I'd throw the scibor bear cavalry in there for completion, but I've gotta say, if it were me, those birds would win, hands down.

Haha that segway is pretty inventive.

The Scibor mounts are cool but they are made for truescale Space marines haha. They would be some huge mounts.

The birds are cool but I dont wanna wait forever for the things to be ready.

How about some gorka morka mutie mounts? Kind of lizard-anteater-horse monsters.

I would use lions as the Calvary and use scion body's and heads as this will go well with their new icons on their vehicles

Praetorians you say...

How about Lions? They'd look cool, they'd fit with the Victorian Redcoat look, and they'd be rather unique. You could even try converting some into steam/robot-lions?

Can't think of where to get some models though, I've been out of the gaming thing for a few years.

Those sabres are very cool by the way.

I've been planning to use some Puppetswar light bike riders for mine. They have lances too so they're perfect.

Those have some cool potential. Especially those sabres/swords. But to make them Praetorian will take a lot of work given the bodies (including cav legs) may not quite mesh with the more involved bike pose.

Post pictures of them when you get it though.

Praetorian see Victoria miniatures for upper bodies and heads that make it easier to work with.

The lions GW high elf chariot figures, also lions are available from wargods line.

The Empire Demigryph Knights would work good for Praetorians IMHO.

Alright, whole there are lots of cool ideas on here, I have gone with the badgers. They are actually a decent size so they arent too big or small for the role and 10 of them are available for me right now nearly new.

So the Praetorian Badger Lancers will join the ranks soon.

Some really cool ideas though. But I still think badgers are second best to the Mighty Moa Riders.

The badgers are pretty awesome. You should paint the squad leader's mount black with a white stripe down its back though.

I will do exactly that. Pretty good idea. I have never seen a badger before, are they only ever black and white?

WW1 motorcycles? Like the douglas? I think. If only we had rules for dragoons so you could use the side cart types.
