How do you get conservatives to love a gun-safety PSA? Perhaps the secret is to add a dildo. Or two.
Two sex toys are the main attraction in a new gun safety ad called “Playthings” by the group Evolve Together.
The ad’s message encourages parents to keep their guns, like their sex toys, locked away in a place where curious children can’t find them.
“If they find it, they’ll play with it,” a voice intones as two young boys engage in a sword fight with the pink and purple sex toys.
“So always lock up your guns.”
Founded in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary school massacre, Evolve Together set out to provide a “neutral ground” for reducing gun violence.
“We’ve recruited gun owners, manufacturers and retailers to sit alongside non-gun owners,” the group’s Web site says. “And for our first act, we need to take back the word ‘safety’ so that it isn’t on either side, but is universal and politically agnostic.”
Gun enthusiast and conservative radio host Dana Loesch called the ad “hysterical” on Twitter and invited Evolve co-founder Rebecca Bond on her radio show.
Not all gun advocates are happy, however. Town Hall’s Katie Pavlich called the ad an “immature” trivialization of gun safety.
“An ad about sex toys is supposed to make us think about an issue as serious as proper firearm storage when kids are in the house?” Pavlich wrote. “The ad isn’t funny. In fact, it’s immature. Instead of promoting safe storage of firearms, it does the opposite by trivializing a serious issue.”
In a statement to Town Hall, Bond explained that humor was part of the strategy to side step the political mine field of gun control and get to the issue of safety:
“Our PSA is humorous, but the message is serious. Parents need to take ownership of safety in the house. If you don’t want kids to play with it, put it away – it’s up to you to keep your stuff locked up. We’re using humor to cut through political correctness and deliver a simple message. Americans can have a serious conversation about firearm safety that doesn’t devolve into a political abyss,” Evolve Together co-founder Rebecca Bond said in a statement.

Meh... pretty fething stupid if you ask me... Although, my own reaction to the "other mom" would be to lean over and say "you better have little Timmy wash his hands after they're done playing "

Funny ad.
But one would think that parents are smart enough to know that they should keep their weapons out of reach of kids and don't need an ad to tell them that.
In any case, I now want to have dildo sword fight.

You'd THINK so, but the number of accidental gun deaths is surprising...
The thing is, the ad's not wrong. Nothing wrong with having guns, just EVERYTHING wrong with having them not locked up so kids can't get to them, if you are expecting kids to be in the house with them.

They are...
There is only about 250 a year for people under the age of 25. From all the hype about it, you'd expect it to be an much higher number. To paint a frame of reference, it is such a low number, that the closest published cause of death that comes close to it that I could find was "Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia" or basically death because your prostate grows to large. And that still occurs 6 times more then accidental gun deaths among young people (and "young" accounts for a large segment of adults).

I don't think the point is that it is an epidemic, but those 250 are entirely preventable with a little thought and education.

Wait till you see the PSA for that; "If they can find it, they'll play with it" means something quite different.
Best post I've seen all week, I cannot exalt that enough.
Sadly, however, PSAs like this are never seen by the people who actually need to see them. Simply teaching your child about what not to do is not enough. How often do children do things they're told not to do? All the time.

Kids aren't stupid. They learn when you teach them.
I still make sure to put knives and stuff away whenever anyone brings their children to my house. I am sure that they know knives are dangerous, but better safe than sorry.
You can teach people all you want about safety, but the only way you can be sure that children will not misuse things or accidentally injure themselves or others while you are not looking or not there is to make sure the potential source of harm is kept in a safe and secure place.
As a responcible gun owner I would have thought you would appreciate that, and the point of the advert.
I'll have to keep an eye on this group. They seem decently legit, but I've a feeling they're a Trojan horse.
Yeah, that's my feeling too. Then again maybe I'm just jaded from the constant comparisons gun-control advocates make between firearms and phallus's

Which is why my opinion is that if you have firearms in the house you teach your children about them so that they understand they are not toys. Get them to clean them (under supervision) too, that'll reduce some of the mystique too

After dealing with parents in a variety of situations, I quickly learned that if you can't trust a kid with something, odds are you probably shouldn't trust the parent with it either. After all, the only difference between a parent and a "non parent'', is that one managed to conceive a child and the other didn't. It doesn't exactly take a GED to pull that off, and it's not like having a child suddenly makes you stop being an idiot.

I'm pleased you made the assumption that I leave firearms sitting on end tables and the like, simply because I teach my children that they are dangerous.
If I tell my kids what dildo's are used for, would it be ok to leave them out on the coffee table then as well?

Erm... I made no comment or assumption about how you interact with guns. I was responding to your comments which seemed to suggest that if you secure guns away from children this in some way unsafe because you are not also spending time educating them about firearms.
Edit: of course education still plays a major role in safety - securing the dangerous items adds another layer of safety... on that is significantly more likely to protect people against harm as the object that causes harm is not physically available.
If I tell my kids what dildo's are used for, would it be ok to leave them out on the coffee table then as well?
Well, the one armed with the gun rather than the dildo will stand significantly more chance of causing harm to themselves or others than the one armed with a dildo...
In terms of potential physical harm I would suggest there is no comparison between leaving a dildo laying around and laying a gun out. Whether or not it is culturally acceptable however...

I have a question, who is this for? Responsible owners will look at it and go "DUH, I know this already". While irresponsible will not heed the warning because they are dense. Is it for anti gun to just nod in agreement to? Also, I want to be in the room they day that kid realizes he was playing with a dido. It will be hilarious.

The problem is nowhere is out of reach of kids. A lot of kids know where something like a gun is kept, and parents assume that they won't play with it because they are not allowed.
I remember when I was young my dad kept a Stanley knife in a locked draw in his room (which was also locked). I saw him get it out one time to cut something, and he explicitly told me not to play with it. I still remember how angry he was just at the idea of me playing with it. But at the grand old age of 6, I was fully aware that the key to the draw was in his bedside cabinet, and that the room could be unlocked with screwdriver. So despite being under pain of death, I would go into his room and use the knife with impunity, whenever I needed to cut something (which for some reason was all the time). He never would have found out either, except one time the knife slipped (who knew knifes do that?) and I cut off one whole side of my finger (right through the middle of the nail). So I got busted, and a trip to A&E, and a nasty scar.
So yeah, if you have a gun and kids, you might actually be surprised how often they have handled it without you knowing.
