When I first started building my current army I fancied two blocks of Militia. I've been told they don't play particularly well but I like the character. I wanted to play 2 blocks of 28 so I've bought 3 boxes and they're almost done.

So 2 questions;

I have to play them for now because I've bought them so what are they best for? How do you use yours?

Do you have any pictures?

Stephen

Uh, you've put this in the 40k forum instead of the fantasy forum.

A mod should move it shortly.

As for the models in question they were originally released as Mordheim gangs.

I'd look for the rules for that game as it is fantastic and you have enough minis to get several people started with the different human gangs.

I reposted it in the General Discussion thinking you had deleted it, what a div. I pressed the "Call Attendant" button on that one now.

Note, I'm not an Empire player, but having played against Empire before I have seen them used as small 5 man detachments for small 10 man units of missile troops (crossbowmen, handgunners)

Not sure if you'd want to run 3 boxes worth like that, but I would say they should be used the same way as spearmen, as they put out the same number of attacks but don't lose them as fast (if you have 3 ranks, every casualty to spearmen lose an attack but it takes 11 casualties before free company are impacted)

So something like a block of 30, and then 6 small chaff detachments for your handgunners/crossbowmen/archers (if you have any)

Or, as you originally intended, 2 blocks of 28 could be nice, too.

Buy a box of state troops and convert all of them to halberdiers. You can make some pretty cool guys!

I like the idea of small detachments of them to protect shooting units, I might use them that way in a bigger list, a bit of versatility.

Slightly OT but can a parent unit call Stand and Shoot if a detachment is charged?

I thought of running them, as they do have 2 attacks, but the lack of armour make them more worthy for detatchments to counter charge into the flanks. I used my box for 5 extra halberdiers and 10 bowmen, leaving me with 5 bodies for crossbows or swordsmen or some special char. The bits is what this box is for.

I don't have the book in front of me but IIRC only detachments can declare reactions to parent units receiving charges and not the other way around.

ToW armies I own:
Empire: 10,000+
Chaos Legions: DoC- 10,000+; WoC- 7,500+; Beastmen- 2,500+; Chaos Dwarves- 3,500+
Unaligned: Ogres- 2,500; Tomb Kings- 3,000
Hotek: Dark Elves- 7,500+; High Elves- 2,500

correct.

I love the free company box and its not a horrible unit to field on the table as detachments. Using them as your main blocks are, eh. But the great part is it doesnt matter unless you are looking to be tournment champion at a GT.

The free company box was created for mordheim which it excells at

I thought that might be the case. Better to have shooting detachments then maybe.

Been Around the Block

A while since I played. From what I recall Militia were:

Cheap
Had 2 attacks
Had low armour

Given that, I'd suggest breaking them down into smaller blocks and using them as detachments (if Empire even gets detachments anymore) for your melee troops. Putting them on the flank of an enemy unit lets you inflict some losses, score some combat res points, and hopefully avoid some of the return fire. And for a low point cost to boot.

somewhere in the webway

my buddy runs a massive hoard of them, supported by an attached priest and captain, with a lvl 4 life mage buffing in behind. all told, the unit just wont die. it keeps regenning guys, and with str and toughness buffs can get pretty scary.
