Does anyone know a third-party manufacturer who makes backpacks which fit well on the old metal kasrkin models? Grinding off that block of metal on their backs looks difficult, so something which fits neatly over it would be ideal.

I'm not really familiar with the models myself but I can direct you to a few alternatives that might or might not work.
Anvil Industry does make a few alternative marine backpacks. Some of the smaller ones might work for IG:

And Pig Iron has IG compatibe bits and models although only a few backpacks I think.
