Like many veteran players i guess, I was somewhat reluctant to move to 6th Edition when it came out, largely because I own and play all 40K armies and the cost of replacing codexes and rules, never mind upgrading armies with new units, is astronomical. I did eventually begin the process of upgrading to 6th and replacing my codexes as and when they came out but to say I was somewhat miffed when GW dropped 6th like a stone and moved onto 7th after, what, a year or so of 6th was something of an understatement. So I am not moving to 7th and instead will continue playing a version of my own choice (leaning towards 4th at the moment).

Anyway, the point is, for the sake of completness, it irks me somewhat that 6th is effectively an unfinished version as not all of the codexes had been revised by the time the version ended so the question is, are the new 7th edition codexes 'compatible' with 6th? That is to say, will the new Ork codex work with 6th rules? Or are they too far apart? They seem to share the same design, font, layout etc so is the rest more or less the same? Will it all 'work' without too much effort so I can collect the remaining 7th ed codexes to make a complete 6th set?

My thoughts run along somewhat similar lines to your, filbert. I have been considering if it is possible to assemble an ideal or let us say least worst version of 40K by taking each chunk of rules (movement, LoS, wound allocation, etc) from the edition in which it was best handles and spooging them all together into a chimaera of a rulebook.

The same problem arises of how to deal with codexes. I suspect the best solution is to collect the most recent codex, and simply ignore any rules that aren't catered for in the edition of the game you want to play.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The only things that will need house-ruling are the Psychic powers and warlordvtraitw, the rest should work fine.
