Formations are a type of Detachment.

generally formations are a special type of detachment which require specific units to be selected with possible other restrictions. No more or no less on what is required to field.
detachments have slots that you can fill from various battlefield roles. So far, detachments have a minimum amount of slots that must be field and a maximum that can be filled for various battlefield roles.

For example, can I take two different formations and a detachment in one army?

Formations are just a special form of detachment. You can take as many detachments as you like, so long as you fulfill their requirements.
That means that you could take 4 Tau Fire Base Cadre Formations and nothing else and it would be a legal and valid Battle-forged army.

Yes!
You can also take 3 Formations.
For Battle Forged you need everything to be in a Detachment.
A Standard Detachment has:
1). Restrictions,
2). A Force Organisation Chart,
3). Command Benefits
A Formation is a special type of Detachment.
It has:
1). A list of units that MUST be included. No more, no less.
2). Special Rules, that apply to the Formation.
You may take Detachments and Formations in any combination, as long as meet the requirements of each.
A Formation may also become your Primary Detachment, if your Warlord is chosen from it.

Pretty much the same difference as between HQ and fast attack. You get different choices to fill those slots and a different amount of slots.
For example, for orks you can have either Ghazghkull Thrakka or a Stompa in one detachment, not both since you only have one LoW slot.
For your two (or three, depending on detachment type) HQ slots, you cannot use Thrakka or the stompa, you must use a Warboss, Big Mek, Weirdboy, Mek or one of the characters.
Picking a LoW also doesn't satisfy the mandatory HQ choice, simply because it's a different slot. A LoW choice can be your warlord though (just as any other character chosen from any slot).

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

The same as the difference between HQ and Heavy Support. You're taking about Warlord perhaps? A Warlord is the 'General' of your army and you can have only one. They are mostly the same with two differences. Formations are Detachments, but a special kind. Instead of telling you to pick 1 HQ, a Formation tells you which exact HQ to pick. Another difference is that Formations can be taken in an Unbound-army, whereas Detachments are only for Battle-forged lists. shyzo wrote:For example, can I take two different formations and a detachment in one army?
You can take any amount of Detachments and/or Formations in one army as long as the points (our TO) allow it. It is also time to promote my thread again: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/608505.page
