Saw this as I went through old Joystiq articles at work, I liked the Baldurs Gate 1+2 Enhanced Editions, I'm sure I'll love this.

Having already enhanced both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2, developer Beamdog now sets its sights on another Dungeons & Dragons Infinity Engine classic, Icewind Dale.

"It is now official, Icewind Dale:Enhanced Edition is available for pre-order on Beamdog," reads a tweet from Trent Oster, creative director on the aforementioned Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Those who follow Oster's tweet to the game's website will find a brand new pre-order page for Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition that reveals a few key details. Like its predecessors, Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition will appear on PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices, and will feature a purchase price of $20.

Unfortunately, Beamdog has yet to decide on a release date for Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition, though in the meantime, prospective players can learn all about the various tweaks and improvements Beamdog has planned for the roleplaying classic by visiting this page.

Overview/Tweaks/Improvements:

Evil stirs beneath the Spine of the World.

In the northernmost reaches of the Forgotten Realms lies the region of icy tundra known as Icewind Dale. Journey deep into the Spine of the World mountains, a harsh and unforgiving territory settled by only the hardiest folk. Encounter fearsome beasts that have learned the cunning and ferocity needed to survive among the snow-shrouded peaks. Confront an evil that schemes beneath the carven glaciers and mountainsides to wreak destruction upon the face of Faerûn. This is the world of Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition.

Originally released in 2000, Icewind Dale is a Dungeons & Dragons game set in Wizards of The Coast's legendary Forgotten Realms. This Enhanced Edition allows players to experience the epic adventure on PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android tablets and phones, and includes a host of new features:

Swords and Sorcery: Discover dozens of new spells and items, including new magic armor and weapons.
Blackguards and Wizard Slayers: Select from almost 40 new kits and classes to create the perfect adventuring party.
A New Look: Experience the Enhanced Edition's all new interface, including the new Quickloot bar.
Bring A Friend: Join your fellow adventurers in cooperative, cross-platform multiplayer games.
See The Unseen: Explore quest content cut from the original game, now finished and restored.
More to Experience: Enjoy the countless bug fixes and improvements that await you in Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition!

I'm pretty excited for this, as I think I clocked more time on this and it's sequel then Baldurs Gate 1+2. The ability to customize every party member made it feel a lot more immersive than being shoehorned with BGs NPC party members and their usually restrictive classes/skills, not to mention oftentimes annoying personalities. Icewind Dale was almost like a different game every time, at least gameplay/strategy-wise with choosing different party make ups and such.

Also, this brings us possibly closer to Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition...

Nice. I really liked Icewind Dale.

As far as Planescape, you've seen https://torment.inxile-entertainment.com/ right?

Ya, I vaguely remember that, but haven't paid attention.

They got a release date? I perused the site a bit and found nada.

I don't think they have anything set in stone, they say Q4 2015 - it's the same guys that are doing Wasteland 2.

I loved the soundtrack in Icewind Dale and the sequel.

Which sounds like damning with faint praise, but it was a really good soundtrack.

I'm in two minds about it. It's great that these older games are getting the attention and re-release that they deserve but I felt that the BG1 and 2 Enhanced Editions didn't really add that much to the games that wasn't already available and has already been available for some time as fan expacs, mods etc.

For people who have never played these games, then I heartily recommend them but for those of us who have played them through a number of times, there isn't that much 'new' to see beyond the prettied up visuals.

Ya, I'm weird(and by weird I really mean lazy as feth and computer illiterate) in that I don't much care for all the modding and such. I'm sure its very easy to do, but I'd rather have it all in one package. For 20 bucks, I have no problem with it.

I can completely understand the side that doesn't want to pay and just install the mods.

I remember liking these and I tried to go back and play them recently. The UI felt unsuitably clumsy by today's standards, my mouse didn't work right and the graphics scaled all wonky on my monitor. If this fixes those issues I'd love to give it a go.

My experience with Enhanced BG1 ~

I wanted to run an evil party. Evil parties are attacked on sight at towns.

I guess they forgot to 'enhance' that aspect of 16 year old game design.

So I am a little wary of Enhanced Icewind Dale.

Yeah, both Icewind Dale games had great soundtracks. Though that causes me a bit of a problem at times. While I liked the first ID game, I loathed the second one. I'll occasionally catch myself mentally humming a tune and trying to remember where it's from, only to belatedly realize it's one of the tunes from the second game.

In any event, this will likely be worth a purchase. The first Icewind Dale was a great dungeon crawler that had the misfortune to get released on the exact same day as Diablo II.

Going to play some tonight before I hit the sack, I'll try to report back tomorrow.
