Subject: Army Painter "Greenskin" Spray Primer for Salamanders?

Has anyone successfully used Army Painter's Greenskin Spray Primer as a match for GW Warpstone Glow basecoat? I've started brush painting a Salamanders army using Warpstone as my base color (which I am very happy with), but it's incredibly time-consuming and tedious to base with given how many coats it takes to get even coverage. I'd really like to switch to a spray basecoat if possible, but GW doesn't make a Warpstone spray. The description for Army Painter's Greenskin spray says "A strong green colour also useful for army projects like ... those Space Marine Dark Angels or Salamanders", which would be great except I've seen some Salamanders tutorials that use a Caliban Green base for a much darker overall tone akin to Dark Angels, so the way that Army Painter says Greenskin is good for Dark Angels and Salamanders makes me worry that this would be much too dark for me. Army Painter also makes a lighter shade spray called Goblin Green - does anyone know which of these 2 sprays would be a better match for a Warpstone Glow basecoat?

I wouldn't touch army painter sprays with a bargepole. They are awful, as I have found out to my own cost on several occasions. The idea is good - base coating in a colour spray to save time - but the execution is poor. I have had several cans with clogged nozzles and just recently, one that decided to leak paint all over my hands and the floor.

I see, that's disappointing. The Army Painter sprays certainly aren't cheap so I had hoped that they were good quality. I suppose I can try switching to a black undercoat spray (I use Vallejo Grey brush-on primer now), but it's hard enough to get Warpstone to cover even a grey primer properly that I'm worried a black primer would be even more difficult. Though, it might save me time in other areas like not needing to black-in the recessed details on the SM armor by hand, etc. Are there any other ways I can save time on the prime/basecoat aspect of painting my army, short of getting an airbrush?

I use them. I've had the occasional accident where I applied it to thickly. But I'm mostly happy.
I usually go over everything that is supposed to have a different color with black first.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Gingalain, that looks pretty close to the color I'd need to match on my current marines... Was that based with the Greenskin spray?

The sprays are matched to bottles, so if you wanted to sample them you could order a bottle of each. I have both, but I'm not familiar with Citadel's paint so I couldn't say which would be best for you.
I have used AP's coloured sprays, and they're...okay. I used uniform grey quite a bit on my deadzone and got good coverage, I've used ultramarine blue on my Epic Imperial Guard, and I've tested both necrotic flesh and skeleton bone on my forthcoming Mantic undead stuff to decent effect. In the latter cases I expect I'll need to touch it up with a brush, but it'll still save time over a black or white spray.
On the other hand, when it comes to painting pricier, nicer, skirmish figures (like Infinity) I still use white, as I expect to be taking more time over the model anyway and I'm not looking for shortcuts.

And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.” |

Thanks Riquende. For a bit of background as to what sparked all this, I spent last weekend meticulously brush painting a single Salamander sergeant and even though I'm extremely pleased with my finished results, I'll never be able to get an army finished at this rate. That's why I'm trying to find ways to save time without sacrificing quality. I used to basecoat in black but my eyes aren't as good as they once were and it's harder for me to distinguish fine details when the black basecoat is absorbing all the light, so I've switched to Vallejo Grey, which I quite like especially for a shade like Warpstone that doesn't have very good coverage. It seems I may have to keep doing what I'm doing and just accept that it will take a long time to finish my army...

I would recommend army painter sprays without hesitation, they are brilliant. They provide brilliant coverage and they make exact matchs in bottles for touch ups. You have to follow the instructions carefully and they do a video on their website which helps. The key is to hold it no further away than 30cm and spray in fast sweeping motions and not do short sharp bursts as that can clog up detail. I have never had a dodgy can and I have used at least 10 cans of the stuff!

What Uk_Crow said - I've never had a problem with them.
I undercoated a ton of my Eldar in their Bone colour. Washed, drybrushed, don't like... SO they're going back in The Dip when I move and I'll be rethinking my colour schemes!

I love my Army Painter sprays. I've painted about 3000 points of Ultramarines, 1250 of Dark Angels, and 500 of old school Imperial Guard using them. I swear by them - you just have to be careful to follow the instructions on the can.
I used their Greenskin color for the retro Guard - if you just get their bottled paint it's a 100% match too.
