Subject: Purifiers - The big question

Sybarite Swinging an Agonizer

Sorry if I sound like a total noob but after reading the Grey knight codex thoroughly and the rules concerning soul blaze I simply can not understand what makes them so good (Purifiers that is).
I mean 2D6 St 5 Ap4 with a 9 inch range ignoring cover, how is that any different from a 3 HB dev squad with perfect timing?
I look forward to some enlightenment...

As a nova power, it affects ALL units within range. So if you have 10 enemy units in range, that is 20D6 S5 hits. If you have 5 purifier units and they all cast it successfully, that then becomes 100D6 hits. It adds up.

Well they are fearless, 2 attacks base, Mastery Level 2, and their melee attacks cause Soul Blaze. ML2 is helpful because the unit can activate force weapons (or cast Cleansing Flame) and cast Hammerhand without needing an attached IC.
As jy2 said, Cleansing Flame isn't high strength or low AP, but it can affect multiple units and cause a lot of wounds (which also cause Soul Blaze). Being a Witchfire (albeit a Nova), it can also be cast from inside a Rhino, so that adds quite a bit of distance to the 9" radius.
I've also seen people discuss the idea of having a 10 man squad of purifiers in an allied SW drop pod. Drop into the middle of the enemy army turn 1, Combat Squad, disembark 6", cast two Cleansing Flames. That's quite a bit of potential damage for a single squad (even if it is almost 300 points).
Not amazingly broken, but certainly powerful if used correctly.

Well, we had such a situation described by jy2 in a recent apo battle.
Two Purifier units were delivered simultaneously via Landraiders.
Absolutely devastating situation.

Due to being nova, you can spam it vs flyers and fmc without any loss of effectiveness compared to HB.

Great point, I tend to forget that. Have to catch the blighters first, however, and I swear 9" is the shortest distance in the universe when I'm playing my friend's Godzilla Tyranids...

The point is to hit as much units as possible.
Horde armies may have a bad day against this nova power.

Ahhh I see now (light bulb pings above my head), I'll have to give them a go for myself.
So my next question is which is the best/ most balanced way of transporting them ?
Cheers for the responses by the way.

Transports?
Rhino, SW Drop Pod, Razorback, LR pattern tank or Stormraven.
I'd go in this order.

Agreed, although I'd personally put the Stormraven squarely last.
To Iddy00711,
Rhino - Mobility, fire points, cheap.
SW Drop Pod - As discussed. Nasty way to deliver Cleansing Flame to middle of opponent's army. Requires allies (including HQ and Troop).
Razorback - Mobility, no fire points, can't carry full-sized squad, good weapon (no psybolt anymore...)
Land Raider - Great weapons, not just a delivery vehicle, assault vehicle, HUGE target, expensive.
Stormraven - Must reserve, fast, assault vehicle, good weapons, passenger deathtrap, expensive.
Honestly I'd stick with a Rhino or an allied Drop Pod. Unless you were planning on taking a Land Raider anyway, I'm not sure it's worth bringing one specifically to cart around purifiers. I've had terrible luck with Storm Ravens (S10 AP2 hits when crashing... ugh) so I shy away from them like the plague.

In a recent game, I had 10 purifiers with halberds and one hammer in a rhino.
My oponent moved in with 2 raiders, 1 raider with 10 wracks, 1venom with 4 wyches.
The purifiers split up and disembarked. Moved into the middle. And let go with their Novas.
First unit rolled 11 and popped all 4 transports. The second unit rolled 7 and killed all the wyches and some wracks.
Then came the shooting, 10 stormbolters blasting the rest of the Wracks.
The second turn they embarked again and drove of within 9" of his flyer. Out of the fire point they popped it without any problems.
They are killers!
Of course it wasnt the best move to park all those things within 9", he will never do it again.

Just a note. If you take 10 Purifiers in a Rhino and Combat Squad them, then I believe you can cast 2 Cleansing Flames from the same Rhino. Can anyone see a reason why this wouldn't be allowed?

Each transport can only hold one unit. Combat squads are separate units.

Except for the new combat squad rules that allow squads to share the same transport if they're from the same parent unit.

Exactly. So can 1 model from each squad cast Cleansing Flame from the 2 fire points, thus giving you 2 Cleansing Flames? I can't find a restriction therefore I think it is a valid tactic.

Each transport can only hold one unit. Combat squads are separate units.
Combat Squads rule grants permission to embark two units into same vehicle.
Codex: Grey Knighs wrote: In an exception to the normal rules, two combat squads split from the same unit can embark in the same transport vehicle, providing its Transport Capacity allows.
Same language is present in C: SM I believe.
And yes, as CF is witchfire, you may cast it via both units.
