Subject: You Can't Handle Immersion of This Magnitude
You must find this. You must play this. The Force compels you.
Spoiler:
Spoiler:
The last time I was in an arcade was four years ago, and it was a Dave and Buster's in Anaheim, California. I only played flight, giant gun, and racing arcade games. I chose those because they offered an experience I couldn't get at home on consoles. Star Wars Battle Pod is definitely something that needs to be experienced.
Star Wars Battle Pod features:
Arcade-exclusive gameplay on a unique dome screen enveloping your entire area of sight which enables “the player to be surrounded by gameplay images and experiences on the dome screen”
Expected to launch in the US in January 2015 “ in participating arcades around the country” with a global launch to follow
Five stages that “recreate the fiercest battle scenes from the original Star Wars trilogy.” Players will take command of the vehicles that appear in the films such as X-wings, snowspeeders, speederbikes, the Millennium Falcon and TIE Advanced.
Loaded with features and unique gameplay elements, players can “experience the impact of the explosions and destruction that will leave them with a sense of actually piloting and taking part in action-packed scenes from the films.”
Star Wars: Battle Pod offers a real sense of flight combat action and delivers an authentic flying experience as if players are actually sitting in the cockpit of a battle pod in the Star Wars universe. Players can jump right in to true-to-film battles on Endor, Hoth, Death Star II, Yavin, and more
The game will be available worldwide at an arcade near you. If you are near New York City, check it out the Dave and Buster's in Times Square. I can't even imagine how the long the wait for the line would be, as that is a popular location.

So are these like the old Virtual World pods that ran Battletech and Red Planet? The Star Wars pods bear a striking resemblance to the later Tesla pods.

I was an arcade recently playing a few oldschool games (late 80s, early 90s stuff).
Games were €1 a pop - compared to about 20c back in the day.
My mind boggles as to how much they'd charge for this.....

Probably.

It's hard to say but it seems that way. I imagine it is still fun to play, though.

Last Arcade I went to (Galloping Ghost near Chicago) was a flat rate and you could play unlimited games all day. At one point we left to go down the street to get lunch then went back and resumed playing. It was awesome.

Yeah, and don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with a good immersive on-rails flyer. Especially when it comes to iconic scenes like in Star Wars. That said, if it were a free roaming (or at least a large combat zone) flying game where you have total control of your ship, that would be amazing.
So I got nothing against this, but man it would be so cool to say have...Rogue Squadron or TIE Fighter in this pod.

Normally, I upvote everything Star Wars, but ... am I jaded when I say that this really didn't look very impressive for a dedicated platform (where I would expect impressive hardware beyond what we have in our homes) - especially when it's an on-rails shooter? The visuals seemed very ... "plastic", and the Death Star trench run had texture load delays that were immediately noticeable just from looking at a tiny youtube window. I can only imagine how jarring it must be if you actually play this on a screen as big as the one in the capsule.
Bonus penalty points for silly arrows and "push button now" icons whose presence certainly doesn't add to the immersion.
And for having the screen just be a really big TV instead of a proper cockpit experience.

Hah, I had to think of Battletech as well.
Though I recall the BT pods were a lot more immersive in their interior design, actually looking like a proper 'mech cockpit with tons of switches and additional monitors.

I've seen better looking games in crappy mall arcades that sit there gathering dust.
Since I won't be able to afford this, it doesn't really impress me

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

It is a round screen showing part of it on a 2D image. I have to imagine it is far more impressive in person than through a youtube video.

If it really is a curved screen, then I'll take that part of my comment back!
Shame they didn't show more of the pod itself.
Still, that "plastic" look ... I dunno, maybe it's just the lighting?
