isn't he the only one realistically of the primarchs to come back.....he is a perpetual (essentially immortal)

He might be dead.
Perpetuals can have their souls destroyed by Daemons.
He got in a fight with a guy with a weapon meant to kill perpetuals.
We don't know what went down there yet.

Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

Just ignore the Horus Heresy series until it's done. It might have synched back up with regular fluff by then, or it might not and we can say that it does not and so ignore it.
As it stands currently Trazyn might swoop in with some plot device and remove all presence of perpetuals from the time line.

In regular fluff Vulcan disappeared some time after the second founding, and the Salamanders think he'll come back to them once they find his nine treasures.

He was last seen in a box.

I swear Vulkan took over the HH series for two years and it advanced zero.

During the Heresy Era we dont know what happens to him yet.

We know he is around during the scouring, as he is one of those that opposed (or approved or, can't remember ) the splitting of the legions.

As to where he is in the 40k era... well there is a certain Necron known for collecting things...

He opposed splitting the Salamanders because they were at about Chapter strength already

The longer the HH goes, the more of a fluff disaster it becomes. Authors can't even maintain internal consistency between each other, how can they be expected to reconcile their work to the greater collection of fluff?

Well, unless things change in the HH series (and there is room for change. Siege of Terra hasn't happened yet after all and it currently conflicts with codex fluff), Vulkan is currently in camatose floating around in a casket (The Unbound Flame, one of the Vulkan relics the modern day Salamanders are searching for)

This conflicts with just-as-recent (as of 6th edition's main codex) (therefore, not a retcon. Can't be a retcon if BOTH cases are around in present day) Codex fluff where Vulkan was around after the Heresy to oppose the Codex astartes. So either it's a canon conflict, the "Vulkan" that opposed the codex astartes was a normal astartes that took up the name of Vulkan and history screwed up and thought him to be the primarch, or the actual Vulkan in the HH BL series will eventually wake up before the HH and come back (the last one would be kinda strange from a narrative standpoint though)

A White Dwarf article allegedly hints that the "man in baroque power armour" that Trazyn the necron collector has is Vulkan. It's notable that Trazyn has been trolling the Salamanders with claims that he has some of Vulkan's sacred relics for a long time, now. I wouldn't be too surprised, myself.

Vulkan's in storage. Blame hoarders and kleptomaniacs like Trazyn.

So, this confusion is all due to a change in authors... Nick Kyme wrote Vulkan Lives and did a damn good job. But then another author wrote The Unremembered Empire, (i honestly forget who) He did a great job with most the books, but completely contradicted everything that Kyme wrote in Vulkan Lives. At the end of Vulkan Lives, Vulkan retains his sanity through his strong will after all the torture Curze puts him through. But at the beginning of The Unremembered Empire hes litttle more than a rabid animal that attacks everything that moves and no explanation is given as to why... So personally I ignore the fate that was given to him by the second author. Kyme would have done a better job.

But..

Vulkan is a perpetuate, he was killed dozens of times by Curze throughout the two books. Another perpetuate named John Grammaticus stabbed Vulkan in the heart with a spear called the Fulgerite, its blade made from a petrified bolt of the emperor's own psychic lighting. It was said that this weapon can permanently kill a perpetuate. However, John was told before hand by Eldrad that it could restore Vulkan's sanity if he was stabbed by it, thus helping the Imperium win the war with another Primarch to lead its armies. Vulkan did not regenerate from being stabbed by it, he was placed in a coffin with the word Unbound Flame inscribed on the top (Unbound Flame is one of the still missing artifacts of Vulkan by the way). Later a marine guarding the casket thinks he hears a heartbeat from inside, then the story ends...

Before this book was written it was said that Vulkan spoke with Robo Girlyman about his issues with the codex astartes after the heresy. But this new fluff conflicts with that.

My guess is that he will return to the chapter once the Salamanders find the Unbound Flame, dead or alive, if GW ever decides to advance the fluff that far.

Which, at this point, the entire HH story line needs to do unless BL can get their collective acts together.

Vulkan being a Perpetual is a new (and stupid) addition to the lore.

There's no mention of Vulkan as a perpetual in the 40K lore because it didn't exist until it got shoehorned into a badly written Horus Heresy novel. Hopefully at some point there will be some resolution in the book series.

Not something I ever expected to see written down.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?
