Seriously. Look at all the 3rd party manufacturers making so much money off GW's IP by selling themed bases (like Tau Ceti bases). Unless GW is purposefully holding its ears and singling lalalala, there is a seriously good opportunity here to generate more sales - bring on the themed faction bases! Skulls for Chaos, Wraithbone for Eldar, parasitic organisms/roots/fungi for Tyranids, and a whole array of environment bases ranging from badlands over lava flows to urban environments.

If I were leading GW instead of Tom Kirby, I'd continue to push the competitors off the market by stepping up to the plate in this area. Anybody know why GW is so reluctant to bring this stuff out? I mean they've already brought out so many scenery kits.

GW is scared of girls. Why do you think they have so much trouble sculpting attractive female models? Because girls have cooties and the staff at GW don't like looking at them for too long because it makes them feel funny in their naughty place.

Some beancounter figured out that they would make more money releasing overpriced hardcover codex supplements.

Well, they did make scenic bases years ago (3-5). I have two packages of resin Citadel bases.

Actually, they still do. Under painting and modeling, modelling, basing materials.

GW scenic bases would be just skulls. Skulls and more skulls. Maybe a small bit of wraithbone or tau metal underneath but otherwise just skulls on skulls.

And yes, GW are singing "La La La La La!" in full falsetto, belting it out like Pavarotti.

Small companies can survive on small orders. GW's competitive advantage is economy of scale. It doesn't make sense for them to come out with scenic tau bases if they're only going to sell a few thousand of them.

GW learned it's mistake with the 40mm dreadnought scenic base, which apparently they still have a whole warehouse full of.

In any case, it's in GW's best interest to let the remorah's suck away at the scum of small quantities and low margins. If something that any of them do winds up generating serious revenue, they can always copy it later. In a way, the small indie shops are the minor leagues of good ideas.

Even if Games workshop did make scenic bases they would be so expensive no one would buy them anyway.

They do make scenic bases- not for all models, but for characters certainly, then there's the SM Dreadnought base.. I could go on for a bit actually.

And they do make basing kits that come with 25mm and 40mm round resin bits as well.

Think about it this way....those small companies can continue to make those same scenic bases even if GW does decide to go whole hog into the scenic base business, because there is no IP involved in scenic bases. And since those small companies will be able to undercut GW's prices because they won't have to mass produce anything, their market won't be impacted much if at all, while GW just entered into a small demand market that is already heavily saturated. There's no point really.

Besides, GW already sells those fancy basing kits.

They do. They just package them with a bunch of other basing materials and charge way to much for it.

They also hide them in their webstore.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.
