How do people model AM veterans? I haven't found a vet model exactly, and the guardsman model isn't bad, but I'd like to be able to look at the model and know immediately that it is a vet in play.

I can do that via colour scheme and that is currently my approach, but a badass model to show they are vets would be sweet

Thanks!

There are any number of ways to model veterans. The wonderful thing about the veterans is that they can look how ever you want them too. They could be just a regular squad with more equipment. They could represent a specialist unit attached to your army for the battle. Or they could even look like an honour guard type unit. It all depends on how much time, money and effort your prepared to sink into them.

And it kind of depends on how you plan on running them and whether you'd rather stick to official GW/FW models or are willing to get some 3rd party models.

For instant veterany goodness there are the FW Hardened veterans or Elysian Veterans w/shotguns.
Solar Auxilia could be used as vets with lasguns and carapace armour.
Scions with some Scout shotgun arms gives you instant vets with carapace armour and shotguns.

Victoria Miniatures is pretty much the go to place for not-Imperial Guard bits and models. I'd be hitting this place up first.
Anvil Industry, mainly deals in Space Marine bits, but does do some regular guardsmen sized pieces. Their recently released AFTERLIFE range has some great bits that might be of use. Some of these parts can be seen in use in this thread.

If you're just looking to run veterans as a fancy looking infantry squad with lasrifles then get one of the FW Upgrade Packs to snazz up a regular squad with extra gear.

The options are nearly limitless for this sort of thing.

Completely forgot about Mad Robot Miniatures. Also a great source of Guardsmen related bits.

I just added heads from the WHFB range t make each one look a bit older & individual. Also adding pouches, grenades & pistols holsters from different armies (eg Space Marines).
You could also add bits from enemies they have fought against like an Orc chopper or an Elder head.
Back packs are also great. I've used the ones from the heavy weapons kit.
I've also used the old oop Orlock gangers from Necromunda for Cadian vets & Goliaths for Catachan ones. The plastic are great for arm & weapons swaps too. probably hard to find now though unless you have them already sitting in a box somewhere.

I think a unit of forge worlds death korps of krieg standard squad or grenadiers would look cool as vets!

The traditional way to model vets is to have three models in the squad with melta or plasma guns, something no other IG unit can have. Any additional aesthetic upgrades are optional. Feel free to do them if you think it makes the models look cool, but don't worry about WYSIWYG.

They would, but only if you're doing a pure DKoK army. The FW IG models are true 28mm scale, not the distorted "heroic" scale of the plastic IG. So a DKoK grenadier will look really weird next to a basic Cadian guardsman.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

If doing them completely as their own unit DKoK would look fine as vets.

I tend to use one of the non Cadian sets as vets, using particular groups for different purposes. Such as tallarns for the Camo dudes as they have a lot of fabric, and Mordians for a more 'parade ground' look. Once all the uniform colours are tied in it really makes them stand out as special units
