Hi all,
I've knocked up a tank kill team night for my local club. I thought I'd post it up here for all you dakka folk to see what you think. the missions aren't that imaganative I Know so an idea or two would be grand. Please feel free to use this too.
Force organisation
Your Kill team should be 750 points made up of ground based armoured units.
• Tanks 0-1+
• Walkers 0-1+
• Skimmers 0-1+
• Lords or war 0-1
Your armoured units may not be a HQ choice, such as Bjorn Fell Handed or a Librarian Dreadnought, etc. They can be chosen from any other force organisation slot.
Nominate one of your vehicles to be the team commander. If you only have a single unit then this is your team commander.
Any upgrade may be purchased for units as per the relevant codex and cost.
Mission rewards.
At the end of each battle add up your score (as below) and add D3. This gives you your mission rewards.
1 point - for first blood.
1 point - for each objective held.
1 point - for each unit killed by your Team Commander.
1 point - for each unit that has all its original hull points reaming.
2 points - for killing your opponents team commander.
3 points - for tabling your opponent.
1-3. Your reward has been lost, head up and get on with it.
4. Your Team Commander gains Scout.
5. Your team Commander can move at combat speed ad fire all weapons at full Ballistic Skill
6. Your Team Commander can move at cursing speed and fire one weapon at full Ballistic Skill.
7. Skilled Driver, nominate one unit. That unit auto passes dangerous terrain tests.
8. Marksman, your Team Commander counts their Primary Weapons AP value as one higher (AP3 becomes AP2 etc)
9. Reload, one use only. Your team commander can fire their primary weapon twice in one turn; this may also be at a different target.
10. Your Team Commander gains the, It Will Not Die, special rule.
11. Nominate one unit. This unit gains +1 Ballistic Skill.
12. Your Team commander gains +1 hull point.
Missions
Game Laentgh
Each mission last 5 turns or 40 minutes.
Scouring objectives.
Due to the range and fire power tanks can lay down, the nearest unit to an objective can clam it.
Mission 1
Even odds.
Deployment - Vanguard strike
After deciding deployment zones but before deploying, place a single objective marker in the centre of the board and one in each deployment zone.
The player who Claims the most Objectives wins.
Mission 2

Deployment – Dawn of War
After deciding deployment zones but before deploying. Place a single objective marker in the centre of the table. Place the next two markers along the centre line of the table at 18 inches from either side of the first.
The player who claims the most objectives wins.
Special rules.
Night fighting is in effect for the first turn.
Mission 3

Table Quarters. Pick a table quarter to deploy in. You can deploy any where within the quarter up to 12 inch away from the centre

Looks interesting - however, if you want a tank skirmish game, have a look at the 40k Spearhead expansion.

Confused about the 1+ requirement for tanks, walkers, and skimmers. What about overlap, armies that don't have anything in one of the categories?

sounds good! Confused about the "no hero" units though? Surely bjorn leading an armoured assault makes sense? as would an IG tank commander. Also what about upgrade characters such as longstrike? (and I think cronus? is he still HS?) in any case this is the kind of battle I would have expected these characters to be most likely to appear in

Might want to ban LOW. A Warhound titan (which fits in 750 points) is often going to end the game on the first turn, maybe the second at the latest. And even a Baneblade-size tank is going to be very difficult to deal with when you've only got 750 points available and most tanks are not all that great at killing other tanks.

The problem I have with vehicle-only skirmishes is that it automatically makes a VAST number of units entirely obsolete because there is no infantry. The choices for effective tank-hunting vehicles are pretty limited, with some far outstriping others (cheap AM vanquishers, for example).

But that's the point. You bring tanks to kill tanks.

Hi all,
Some good points in here. I based the game around normal kill teams, which do not allow HQ's. As for long strike etc, I added that upgrades can be purchased. So you can use tank commander upgrades such as longstrike etc. I thought it would add some balance too.
As for lords of war I was thinking about sacking them, but as happend last nigt at the club. One chap used derads in drop pods and land speeders. I thik the game lasted 15 minutes after all the melta shots. That and not everyone has a Titan so I wasn't worried that a war hound would turn up.
As for the 1+ plus cap thats just me monging it. Its ment to show that you can take what you want. Its not a, you must have this and this.
This can be played around with, to make it work for yourselves and is not definative, just an idea for fun.
We did play this night night and it is fast paced game you could play ina lunch break.

While the idea is amusing, tanks do not work in killteam style games.
In a huge scale talk-only fight on a very large map where you can do tactical manuvering it will work great, but that's called apocalypse. (infantry are technically allowed, but lets e honest, apoc is "tanks, big tanks, huge tanks and some support")

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now. |

It actually seemed to work really well because the table was not clogged up with infantry and other units (as in a regular game), nor was it clogged up with infantry and other units and apocalyptic templates (as in an apoc game ).

I like this idea, I'd try to expand on the missions to more entertaining ones rather than serious ones. I'd have low points, loads of players on one big 6' by 6' table.
then I'd have them racing around in a random checkpoint game - 6 objectives, no-one allowed to deploy within 12" of one. start of turn one randomly select an objective and race to get it. at the end of the turn, if one player is within 6" of the objective, and no other player is, they score it, randomly select a different objective and get racing again. basically making people weigh up moving, shooting & flat out without giving the mobile side an unfair advantage - if the objective is contested, then they're left exposed.
I'd also try perhaps a drag-race scenario, like Gorkamorka had, where at the end of the turn all the tanks, scenery and everything move 12" backwards, and scenery that goes off the back gets deployed by a random player. have to disallow skimmers here, in all likelihood, but their rear armour is usually weak so it can be balanced. make immobilised results only halve move, to represent the desparation (they can be running from a warp-storm or something).

Syntax-wise that prefix means 'requires one or more of this'. If you want to say 'you can take or not take this stuff' you might want to delete it so as not to confuse people.

I've ammended the force organistaion chart. I hope this makes more sense. Automatically Appended Next Post: BoomWolf wrote:While the idea is amusing, tanks do not work in killteam style games.

This tank game is meant to b played in a short space of time, with each mission being played against a new opponent. Big tank battles are great but take a lot of time and space. This can be played on a normal table in one evening of even a lunch break. That’s the idea behind it. We did start off thinking about epic tank battles but decided this may work better in the time frame we have at the club nights.
It's defiantly fun to play, its gives you the change to use your long and short range armour. Also because of the size of the game you get ram tanks etc which you don’t normally see happening.
