So as someone who is unsatisfied with AI opponents I play 99% of my games online. But lately my friends and I have been getting increasingly annoyed at online players.

In Dayz for example we are fine with dying. But what we have encountered are people who scream friendly WHILE SHOOTING US and begging us not to shoot WHILE SHOOTING US.

In Warthunder people will ram you solely to annoy you. Your team mates will shoot at you if you are tailing an enemy and they want the kill. Forcing you to move or die.

In Mount and Blade players will take 2 handed weapons with no armour or shields and just flail their weapon in the air in some weird weird way making it near impossible to harm them.

Those are just a few examples. It seems more than ever people are being annoying online. People actually actively try and delay games so everyone waiting to spawn has an extra 15 minute wait (if they bother waiting) to play again. Then you got the people who break the game on purpose and completely ruin what little immersion there is on video games. Like playing against AI its common for people to sit in places where it is impossible for them to be hit and while all those who play it normally eventually die these guys will stand there for hours on end (really, I have watched just to see) shooting targets without the ability to be hurt. The list is endless.

Its at the point now that im considering renting servers privately with my mates just to avoid trolls and game breakers online. Which is a pity because I used to love playing online 6-8 years ago.

All I see now is a bunch of players ready to annoy you anyway they can.

I did a test yesterday on Mount and Blade. I went on the AUS NZ popular server and sure enough the usual players are one trolling. Grubb, drunken bastard etc are the 2 common names. That was at 7AM. I go back at 12, they are still on. Sure enough after checking every so often they are still on right up will 11PM. I stopped checking. They did the same thing each and every time. The best ping server for native and they delay games, flail their weapons in the most glichy way, and smack talk 24/7. Its common in all the games I play.

Anyone else get more annoyed when trying to play a normal game online than they end up having fun?

I can ignore trolls on forums, but in a game the best I can do is leave.

This is why I roll solo, even in MMOs.

One day but only a human opponent can satisfy my drive for challenge.

I guess thats why I wargame, no AI and very few trolls (pretty much none really).

AI are unlearning and can be mastered.

That is pretty much why my only online gaming is a shooter related. And usually never in "squad" based games.

I'm hoping Eternal Crusade can change my online-avoiding ways.

People is the reason I stopped playing games where people are required. My limited spare time is too valuable to me to waste it on someone who doesn't matter, or actively tries to waste it. I guess it would be different if I had friends online to play with, but that's very very rare. Nowadays I just play single player games, or solo if it's a MMO kind of game. I was into Wildstar for a while, but as usual it was other people that made me hate it in the end. Like WOW all over again.

Im only 20, in a few years I will have less time and so on. But at the moment my friends and I enjoy games together when we cant play table top games and sometimes we get lucky and can find a server to keep to ourselves but more often than not it tends to be short lived as a others follow.

Solo games can be fun but its not the same as playing with humans.

The greatest thing about video games to me are the very thing that ruins it. The most annoying bit is I do not understand why.

Had three annoying people in one WoT game earlier: our only arty, an AFKer, and some arse who did nothing the whole game except whizz around our spawn zone, emptying entire magazines into the dirt (and the AFK tank), nudging me (an AT-1 tank destroyer), and side-scraping along me the entire game, not only drawing attention himself by moving full pelt and shooting, but removing my camo rating by moving me.

The AFK tank did nothing until the final minute, where he drove out and died, the idiot kept being an idiot, and the SPG spent the whole game shouting "COME ON888888!" into team chat and just sitting there doing nothing. I'm not exaggerating when I say that, he literally moved to a spot as the game started, and didn't move again. Even when an enemy light walked up to him and fired 7 shots at near point-blank (the enemy light obviously had piss-poor aim), the SPG didn't budge. Checking the post-game stats, he never even fired a shot, and the idiot fired perhaps one with any effect, probably by accident.

What made it worse was that another guy and myself were carrying the game--he more than I--so well that even with all that, we almost won. If we'd had one more tanker who didn't have an arse for a brain, we'd have won it. Even my highlight of that match, racking the enemy SPG within a minute of game start and watching it explode like a metal box of fireworks, couldn't make up for how annoying it was.

I get one or two tanks like that every other game or so--in addition to the normal seal-clubbers you get running elite-ranked T18 and Pz. I C platoons--but that one just smashed every experience I've had. I can take a definite loss because of stupidity, but managing to almost get a win out of it and not quite managing is just far, far more frustrating.

I played online a bit with halo 2 and three. I thought people back then were irritating. I think others players ruin the fun of playing a game more often than not. This is why I stick to solo games.

These days if I play online at all, I only play online with friends, and/or in games where I can easily avoid communicating with anyone. As stereotypes go, games being filled with uppity kids and unwashed neckbeards is truer than most. It's the same reason I don't play tabletop in public groups or at game stores. The activity is fun but you're almost certainly going to run into more awful people than it's worth. At the end of the day if you want to do online stuff and don't have some way to sandbox yourself off from the general public your experience is gonna be awful, no way around it.

Agreed. I blame 'mainstreaming' for this. In the old days most of these people weren't able to configure their router and hence blocked from play. The language some of these kids use too, my ears aren't virgin by any stretch but damn even i have standards.

For some reason WoT seems to be the most challenging game for me personally. I will play for like week long stretches and then have to stop for a month or two because I get so fed up. And it always seems like I play my best in matches that I lose. Like getting six or seven kills, holding a whole flank by myself, and then I get shot in the back because the entire rest of my team couldn't hold the other side.

That. So much that. I usually play brilliantly in games I end up losing, and then get an abysmal game that I win--usually the first of the day, so I get less exp than I would've done for doing well and losing even when factoring in the 2x/3x exp for the first win. I can't recall the last game I won where I also performed over-average, but I can recall loads of times I killed 4-5 enemy tanks and damaged a smattering of others, and ended up losing.

Actually, I can remember one instance of winning a few days ago: in either my AT-1 or Panzerjager I, I took out about 5-6 enemy tanks, including two that flanked the few guys we had left, and the last one that came hunting me when I was the only guy left alive. That's all I remember, though; every other time I've done well has been a team loss, even if I take out 1/3 or so of the enemy team myself, and if someone else takes out another 1/3 or so.

I haven't really played WoT low tier tanks in ages except when I am trying to get kills for Tank Expert.

Majority of the players in WoT are just plain bad, they have no concept of map awareness.

I can get good games as wins or losses fairly regularly, trying for my second mark of excellence on my T29. I regularly get games where I have done 3k damage or more. I can regularly get 1k+ exp per battle for wins without premium.

I have my days where I rage because my team is a steaming pile, but I have learned that I need to lead pushes, hold down flanks or even scout properly to get my team to do what it needs to.

Not to be an ass but really, to play online games you need to have a thick skin. The OP would probably cry into his pillow for hours if he spent a day in Archeage or even Eve Online, where griefing is commonplace.

There are people and groups of people out there who's sole purpose in their games is to frustrate and annoy people so they can "harvest tears".

I had to quit WoT for reasons belonging to the game, the playerbase, and my own problems.

The first is that I hated arty. Couldn't stand having a mechanic that punished mobility, promoted RNGeesus, and generally required the least amount of interaction, and in my opinion, skill.

The second being that all too often, you'd have at least one team mate who would be a total ass. Blocking, pushing, ramming, incessant whining about 'stealing' their kill, and my all time personal favourite, people who would bitch you out for capping instead of hunting down the last few tanks. No thanks, I'll take a guaranteed win over an extra 50 exp.

The last ties all of that together. I started playing competitively and would watch my stats like a hawk. I couldn't log off unless my 'session' was above 66% win rate, and other parameters were met. It started become less of a game, and more of a job. Making time for clan practices, clan wars, and other clan activities was tiresome. Not to mention trying to grind for more T10s non stop for whatever was the FOTM.

I really don't care if people are bad tankers, but dear lord, some of these people have stats that make you scratch your head. Some are so bad that had they done nothing all game, they'd be an improvement on their team.

Anyways, that was my last stint online. Combination of gakky players and my own attitude ruined that game for me.

I play Borderlands and Diablo either Solo or with real life friends/Dakka members. Halo was the only game I played with strangers online. Of course, the fact that I hate humanity as a whole stems from two things: idiot drivers and online multiplayer.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Tell me about it.

Back in BFBC2 (god damn I was actually good at that one...) me and one of my clanmates were alone in a server with pubs. Acama Deser I think the map was called. 3 control points in a straight line across the map 16 to a team. Me and him flew in by heli to the point directly in front of the enemy base and proceeded to hold that point for the entire game. Just him and me. 2 men alone. Abandoned by the country they loved. Tanks, helis, whole squads of guys, we just gunned them down. I died twice he died once and we racked up well over forty kills.

Then we lost. Because even with the two of us being a huge obstruction to the enemy team (the enemy heli never made it far out of their base) our team was completely inept. They never took the other two points, even the one in front of our base -_-

My reward for kicking ass was being accused of hacking by the other team and mine, naturally.

I honestly can't say I had issues with plays in WoT (none that really stand out to me). My issues with that game were purely mechanical. It's best I don't go into LoL. I'll produce a wall of text that will crash the forums.

Never have truer words been spoken. Mandatory post-natal abortion for part (85%) of the player base never seems like such a good idea as when one's been playing LoL for a little bit.

I tried playing LoL, but I was reported for dying, or 'feeding'.

Its just hard to break into a game when right off the bat you're being reported for petty things. Its not like it was ranked or anything.

Even at my worst in WoT, I never reported people for sucking. It was a shame having to carry another useless pubbie, but I suppose you just have to accept that in a random team game.

No argument there. I never understood the need to go mental in an unranked game. It seems petty.

This seems to be the bane of my online experience too, for me its one game that stands out above all others. And that is Company of Heros 2.
The first times I encounterd rather hostile and unpleasent players was when I had played the game for something like one or two sessions onlines. After that it seems the flow of profaneties/ abuse/ keyboard warriors never stopped.
Some of the more typical exampels of this is beeing screamed at for knocking out someones Tiger tank, killing their infanteri with a well placed mine or simply outflanking a fortified position and thus knocking iut their Mgs, At guns and such.

I think you've got it easy these days! Remember the old days of Ultima Online, when people used to kill you, take all your stuff, and most likely cut up your corpse if they had psychological problems (!) And that was it.

Or some of the early MUD text adventures:
"You are in a field. In front of you in the field is a knife."
Command: Walk to knife
"You walk across the field to a knife"
Command: Pick up knife
"The command Pick up is not understood."
Command: Hold knife
"The command Hold is not understood."
"Lord Commander ReXiGoRn has entered from the north. He is holding 48,000 dragon corpses, and a twig."
Command: Get knife
"The command Get is not understood. "
"Lord Commander ReXiGoRn hits you with a twig for 1,856,845,200 damage. You are dead."

The only thing that really comes close to it these days, in terms of frustration caused, is being 'podded' in EVE or some a-hole in Dark Souls 2 ganking you. And even then its easy to get your stuff back, so its not as big an issue.

I did not play much in LoL but I never had that much problem. Maybe because I mostly played in the 3 players map, and often against bots.

I do however now play Strife, which is a moba especially designed to reduce this whole aggressive behavior from player, and damn it is not working . So much anger in some people. If they annoy me to much, I mute them.

Yeah I played Eve regularly between 08 and 10. You learn pretty quickly (and the hard way) not to fly anything you can't afford to lose. I still remember wandering in to low sec and getting pinned by a cruiser. I must have been in the smallest mining frigate getting Veldspar or something equally ridiculous.

Instead of popping me, dude told me how to get back to hi sec and gifted me a few million ISK.

So I went to 0.0 a few days later and got sploded.

Good times.

I'm in a similar boat. People made me give up on MMOs. For WoW, DCUO, and SWTOR, it was the Grundy mentality people had. I once had someone laugh in my face for needing help with a response of "Should grind better gear."

I also played Champs Online for about four years. People also made me quit that. If anyone plays it, they'll be familiar with MCW. I've been getting accused of being a mod for that blog, even though I'm completely unaffiliated, to the point where some people sent me death threats via /whispers. OVER A FALSE ACCUSATION.

So yes. People do ruin online gameplay.

I should also mention that while players can indeed ruin a game, the opposite is also true. In EVE, I played with two different groups of people in two different corps and had a blast doing it. I probably ruined the game for a few people in the process (baited some guy with some less than fair tactics and blew up his super super expensive battleship), but I had a blast with some good people.

Same with World of Tanks for most of my time gaming. I was in a Canadian military themed clan with some other serving members, as well as some random civvies looking for a casual group of people. The whole thing was led by a Chaplain and the second in command was a Leopard II tank driver.

Good times.
