Yes, Kandorak (not catarct) may be used to summon a character with the unit type monster. However I doubt it is intended to be that way (otherwise what is the point of the lower level version?).

If you choose to allow it however, remember that the same logic allows you to do the following.

Ryze, may summon infantry and monstrous infantry characters.
The Dark Riders may summon a character on a chariot or cavalry mount.

My argument to this would be then why does one spell specifically call out "summon a character". If its not a unit type (admitted its not in the BRB), but when the spell was written the designers obviously saw a need to differentiate. Hence if this is the case, then I believe they would have expressed "character" for any spell permitted to do so. Def needs a FAQ though.

Some events have ruled that it can be used towards the unit type. Since I am playing in an event that allows this, my summoning options, and list of things I need to paint are silly long.

Summoning non monster characters. Summoning with somebody NOT nagash. Spam casting it since it is under 15 thanks to ET magic. It is less likely to be dispeled, to get a cheap level 1 wizard.

Because that spell has a pt value of 65 & a cast of 10. Most characters cost over 50 pts so lvl 1 ryze won't work. lvl 2 ryze needs a 14 which is significantly higher than a 10. Kandorak allows you to summon another wizard fairly cheaply to have another lvl 1. It serves a different purpose than going for a 14 to get 100 points.

To address the initial topic RaW you absolutely can.

I'm fairly certain we had a thread on this in which it was proven that character isn't a unit type.

9th Edition is right around the corner. It's possible the rules for characters/cav/monsters will get redefined very soon. It's also very possible that the Lore of Undeath was written to work in 9th edition.

On page 96 (small rulebook) under Character models "Characters are a special Type of unit that can either operate on their own or join another unit from the same side" So there is an argument that Character is a type. 'Special' Character isn't a type, its a classification. There's no reason why Nagash couldn't summon a Mortarch, and infact, he's done so in a wight dwarf (Arkan!)

Monster is the unit type. Characters are a model type.

It doesn't matter if a "character" is a unit type or not- it's useless mental gymnastics. If you have the keyword on your profile, you can be summoned.

Boosted Kandorak summons a monster from the Undead Legions list. A Mortarch is a monster in the Undead Legions list. The fact that he's also a character is totally irrelevant. Although what is relevant is that you'll need some summoning tokens (or whatever they're called) to summon one- and if you're not using Nagash, you'll need a ton of them.

The fact that non-boosted Kandorak exists does not disprove this. There are lots of other UL characters who are not monsters, and boosted Kandorak does not summon those. By the same token, you could use Ryze to summon Infantry characters, but not one that's mounted (since he ceases to be Infantry at that point).

There's no need to make things more complicated than they are!

That's what I was actually saying. I was the one who pointed out in the previous thread that character isn't a unit type.

I know, it wasn't necessarily directed at you. It's just that this thread was starting to devolve into the same argument that was going on in that other one, and it was just as pointless here as it was there.
