Looking back over the year what did you enjoy in 2014 gaming wise?
Any favourite game?
What was your biggest disappointment?

My favorite game will always be Eve Online. For a game that's been out 10+ years they are constantly updating the look and feel of the game with updated models, textures, graphics and UI as well as revisiting all aspects of the game to keep it fresh and change it up a bit.

Biggest disappointment? ArcheAge. complete trash, avoid at all costs. Its a decent fantasy sandbox MMO but it has rampant hacking, cheating, exploiting and botting, the game devs only step in if its going to make them lose money. Game patches are launched untested which breaks the game, servers or creates game or economy breaking exploits. Customer service is a joke, most time they screw over the players they are trying to help. The game has no optimization, the cheat prevention software is a joke, in fact, its a rootkit.

It's a bad sign that I had to go back an look up what was put out this year. I didn't play all that many new big budget game.

Biggest disappointment has to be watch dogs. I mean there are some neat ideas in it. I had a lot of fun hacking camera to camera. They could have/should have just made the whole game about hacking and skipped well everything else because evening else is tired uninspired and repetitive. (Ubsoft is now releasing 3 of the same game every year what the bonk?) Maybe the worst part is that we are getting a second game and I really doubt they will go out of their way to radically rip the game apart like it needs. If aden comes back, you can rightly expect the game to be worthless.

Best game I played (that was released this year) would be alien isolation. The alien is one of the worst parts of this game oddly enough because it's the human enemies and working joes that steal the show. Nice scary stealth that reminds me of system shock.

There is not this idea.

I can never remember what games a released when. Never.

Ok. Blackwell Epiphany is a 2014 game. That's my favorite for the year, I think.

Biggest disappointment was Spacebase DF9. That was a poor choice on my part.

Biggest disapointment : Company Of Heros 2, extremly poorly made. Horrid balance ingame and a less than stellar amount of support from the developer.

Favorite game : Icewind Dale 1 Enhanced eddition, revived my all time favorite game, and gave mne countless more hours of enjoyment

AC: Black Flag was last year, wasn't it? But even then, I only bought it in January and itt's certainly the best game I've played in 2014. I don't think I've actually bought anything new this year, I tend to wait until they are at least half price.

But tomorrow I'll be seeing Halo 2 Anniversary in the flesh for the first time, should be something special; a remake of possibly my favourite shooter game ever in glorious 2014 HD.

I haven't played a ton of 2014 games.

In terms of best game for most play time, it would have to be Destiny.

Worst game? Probably Diablo 3 for the PS4.

Alien: Isolation for me. I am by no means a big horror fan but this game did it for me. It's not only a great survival horror game on its own, but it's also that Alien franchise game we've been waiting for, faithfully recreating that retro-70's space age setting where everybody smokes, music is still on cassette tapes and computers are clunkers with these weird keyboards.

Also, despite it being far from done, Tales from the Borderlands. The first episode set the tone amazingly and gave me high hopes for the next episode in a few weeks.

And yeah, yay! Blackwell Epiphany was released this year, bringing a great series of classic point 'n click adventure games to a satisfying end.

I was disappointed by Divinity: Original Sin. Bland RPG game that railroads you heavily.
I liked Wasteland 2. Now that is how a good RPG is done.

I am looking forward to 2015: Torment: Tides of Numenera, The Witcher 3, and Pillars of Eternity.

Yeah, I like RPGs.

I think I got Space Engineers this year. Love the game, it's the one "still in development" game that I actually keep coming back to. I've spent hours mining asteroids in survival and a lot more hours designing ships in creative mode.

Wasteland 2: and Endless Legend were both pretty awesome. Planetary Annihilation can be a ton of fun. I loved the director's cut of Dragonfall. Rome II was technically last year, but with the Emperor Edition I feel like it is now finally a finished game (although I also mod the bejesus out of it).

I haven't had any huge disappointments - Divinity failed to really capture me despite solid mechanics; Beasts of Prey is pretty lame at the moment but I see a ton of potential; DAI sucks ass gameplay wise but the rest of it makes up for that.

Another +1 for Wastelands 2! Really good game, very characterful and I keep going back to it.

Also had a lot of fun with Rogue Legacy, and the latest Fire Emblem game for the 3DS.

Favorite game I played in 2014? Hmmmm.... Garry's mod? Lotro is always fun, and of course I can't forget Star Wars battlefront II

I really don't play a ton of 'recent' games. The newest game I played this year is probably One Finger Death Punch. (Totally awesome game BTW would recommend)

Well said. I think it turned 10 this year (or at the least, next year) and it's still one of the most fun games ever. In the last week alone my brother and I have put probably 10 hours into it, it's just so endlessly replayable, mechanically simple and graphically decent for the time. A true classic, and the reason that both my biggest hope and greatest fear for gaming in 2015 is that Dice don't feth up the new Battlefront. I don't want a first-person-only, Battlefield: Star Wars, main-character-campaign-Halo-clone (although I wouldn't say no to a redone Republic Commando ). Give me everything that made the old one great, but with better graphics, and I'll be a very happy nerd.

Couldn't exalt this hard enough.

I've been enjoying Destiny this year. First new game I bought in a while, though I enjoyed the Diablo 3 expansion as well.

Worst? Hmm. Can I say Battlefield: Bad Company 2? I know it's old, but it is new to me. And terrible.

Biggest disappointment was destiny for me. Competent shooter with no story and way to much grinding mate me utterly disappointed when I bought it. I have barely played since finishing the so called story.

Best for me would be dragon age inquisition. The combat isn't the best but the game is fun to play and I have spent a lot of time on it so far without getting bored. There is lots to see and do in the game and I like the story for the most part even if it loses steam and urgency at times.

Best surprise was Styx Master of Shadows. A budget stealth game that feels like a genuine steath game not an action steath game. Mechanics are clunky at times but the verticality and level design is great,

What don't you like about it? For me it's a personal favourite, I vastly prefer the light, toungue-in-cheek approach with limitless destruction to the super-serious, dead in a shot style of BF3 (which I still like, but I'd pick BC2 over it any day).

Favourite game of 2014? I haven't bought many, but out of the games I did buy, if we go by hours played, CoD:AW is probably my favourite. Which is surprising, as I've played 2 CoD games in my life. I played CS when i was a young lad, but AW has managed to hook me with delivered promises of jetpacks and lasers, whilst not overdoing said jetpacks and lasers.

If we go by enjoyment factor, I'm going to have to go with Icewind Dale Enhanced. So many hours racked up on the original, and now I can recreate the characters that defined the hours I spent using sticks as swords in the park as a child.

My biggest disappointment has to be DA:I. It's a broken pile of spank that nearly ruined my PS4 laser. And no, there was nothing wrong with the PS4. It's bugged to oblivion. I had to spend an hour trying to get into the final bossfight without bugging the game out. Dialogue crashes, bugged enemies, and lack of choice make it dungeon crawler in an ill fitting RPG frock.

I still have my character on EVE. Hardly play, and by play I just update my skill queue every so often. Edging ever closer to 100M SP. One day I'll play again...

On topic, I haven't played too many games released this year. Endless Legend was pretty good, seemed like they learned a thing or two from Endless Space. Borderlands Pre-Sequel managed to get me for 200+hrs, but I recognize its a pretty flawed game.

Been a pretty light gaming year for me.

I don't play a lot of new games, but I did try out a couple that I could grab for free with my graphics card in a digital offer.

I have to say I am pretty dang disappointed with Sniper Elite 3. It wasn't really what I thought it would be when I chose it. I was expecting massive open levels with lots of sniper nests and stealth/sneaking. It...is not that. I did appreciate the slow motion X-Ray "bullet cam" (what that says about me as an individual I try not to contemplate) but even that felt kind of flat when I managed to put a bullet right through the eyepiece of the binoculars of one of the enemies and it didn't register at all as hitting them until it "went through" and I got a normal head-shot. That and the vehicle destruction felt pretty badly executed. I mean I get that computing hardware isn't good enough to let us do full on deformable metal polygon meshes in a game with good framerate yet, but metal gas tanks on vehicles should not crack into pieces when shot with a rifle bullet...

I found the weapons to be clunky at best. Anything beyond a Sniper Rifle or an LMG with a red dot and you're pretty much wasting your time. The damage screen is awful at indicating how damaged you actually are. Hit boxes for explosives on infantry are questionable.

Some of the level designs were fantastic to look at, but with such a poor showing with weapons and AI, I really couldn't find a reason to recommend it, or ever touch it again after finishing it for that matter.

FEAR

You have your ultra basic fps setting with industry corridors with really bland weapon selection (pistol, assult rifle #1, assault rifle #2. assult rifle #3 and shotgun) and even blander enemy variety (they are literally clones) and it is topped off with gakky horror but it is so good. When you pull that trigger it feel violent, tight and sexy. Firefights are like panic induced orgy of violence where you feel in control. Nothing like those trenches you see in call of duty.

10/10 would bang again.

POSTAL 2

I got this because it was cheap, it supported multimonitor setups and I kinda like the idea (aka south park the game). The problem with the game is that it is an fps first and a society critique simulator next and the fps part sucks.
Game has its' moments like when buying milk or going to the confession booth but the forced shooting sections suck (like when shooting the sjw, shoot the muslims or shoot the cristians).

6/10, atleast it doesn't have aids.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Oh, I didn't give a best game. In the intent of not sounding like I'm just using this thread as an excuse to complain:

It's a game by a smaller publisher called "Bionic Dues". It's kind of like a "rogue-lite" top down strategy game where you control a squad of super powerful exoskeletons against an army of characterful and dysfunctional robots that have taken over your city. I really can not explain why I like this game so much. The basic game-play is pretty dang solid, but there are quite a few problems; the most notorious of which is probably that that the interface is honestly pretty awful and suffers from information overload, Somehow though I just can not stop playing it. All of the 6 to 7/10 elements combine to form something that is a real gem.

Plus the completely incongruous and totally absurd music somehow is actually pretty awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFCClIC-ZXs

Favourite game of 2014

Binding of Isaac Rebirth - It manages to rejuvanate the Binding of Isaac, adding in items which make sense, lots of fun enemies and the addition of seeds and new characters.

Worst game of 2014
Dayz Standalone

This game had potential, A lot of potential to actually be a survival simulator. But gameplay is so clunky, and the basic premise just so grindy that its hard to play. Die from hyperthermia 3 times in a row because you either respawn at the same area, or someone looted the spawn sites.

For me the best was playing P4 Golden during the summer on my Vita, tried it out due to word of mouth and my goodness was I not disappointed. Made me a fan of the persona series to this day and the soundtrack is fantastic.

In terms of the worst, I would say it was Payday the Heist, the first one. The AI is terrible, and the gameplay is meh at best. I understand that the second one is much better but I would even prefer to go on a normal rampage in GTA LCS or GTA 4 than play the missions in Payday.

That game died for me the moment they did away with the Rebel skins - now you have a person saying "I'm a good guy, honest!" while they are fething stood there shooting at you. You don't take the chance, you shoot first. This has effectively destroyed collaborative efforts unless you are lucky enough to have gone online with a group of friends that you know personally. Which is a real shame, as my favourite early memories of the game when the mod first appeared for Arma, was randomly joining up with guys, talking to them, going to try and take out a group of rebels that were in a tall building sniping passer-bys.

Although on the one hand I can see the logic of not knowing whether someone is a lunatic/psychopath and likely to kill you by their clothes, at the same time a computer game will not ever be able to provide the visual cues that you would pick up on in real life. I.e. if someone had mad, darting eyes, or a necklace made of people's ears! In those circumstances you would probably turn down the offer to work with them.

The worst thing about was the reasoning behind the change being made by the guy who made the game. When presented with all of the above, the logical arguments for why rebel skins were essential for the functioning of the game? His answer on the forums, "because I can".

Best is difficult...
World of Tanks kept me busy because there was nothing else until Borderlands: the Pre-Sequel.
Both are good with a few issues but they are no Mass Effect, Bioshock Infinite or Borderlands 2...

The worst is easy: Destiny.
This was the game i was waiting for, for a long time.
The single player was allright for a few hours, but without a real story there is nothing to play for really, for me. And I don't like the multiplayer (no HALO quality and balance).

Defiance did (and still does) the same thing better with the main difference that is does not look as good as Destiny does. But looks are not everything...

DayZ has been amazing for me.

Aside from a few players most of it has been great fun. I had a character last over a month, during this time he went from being a preacher to being a full on cannibal. Met many people both enemies and friends. Even had a slave for a few hours. Its only been getting better too. Its not a fair game, but thats why I like it.

Worst for me, the fact that this year has had so many releases that came out unfinished. I dont buy new games often but almost all of them were pretty bad on release. So many betas as well. Hopefully its a phase that will die out with the decade.
