For me probably Alien isolation, whilst not perfect it was very engaging, great production values and addictive enough.
BF4s expansion were good too, the remake of Firestorm and Gulf of Oman were really superb.

Whilst not released in 2014 Bioshock 3 was by far the worst I played, truely terrible.

In terms of the worst, I would say it was Payday the Heist, the first one. The AI is terrible, and the gameplay is meh at best. I understand that the second one is much better but I would even prefer to go on a normal rampage in GTA LCS or GTA 4 than play the missions in Payday.

Payday: The Heist was also released a solid three or four years before 2014.

Best in 2014 would be Dragon Age: Inquisition, for me. God, do I love that game. I can't get enough of it.

Biggest disappointment? Destiny. Don't hate it, don't regret buying it, but I was promised story and got none, and hoped for balanced competitive, got an unbalanced gak-show. Now I'm just looking forward to a decent game to play on PS4 with my friends.

Best is probably Dark Souls 2. Hell it has it's frustrating parts but a bunch of the bosses can be skipped and returned to if you're not in the right frame of mind.

Having also played the first game in the series this year i also think Dark Souls 2 compares very favourably.

Worst is tough as i avoid buying bad games or ones i don't think i'd enjoy, especially new ones as they're normally full price. I would have said Abyss Odyssey if you'd asked a few months ago but i've since went back and realised it's actually really good.

Next Car Game has been pretty disappointing as they've been really slow with the updates but the game plays pretty well.

I had to give up on Shovel Knight as it suddenly made almost every hazard in the game insta-kill and i didn't have the patience. However it seems to be a good game and would play alot better on the D-pad of a 3DS rather than the spongy analogue stick of a 360 pad.

I don't think I actually bought any games that came out in 2014. I tend to wait for the prices to drop.

The best game that I actually bought in 2014 would probably have to be BF4, I'm really enjoying that.

If we had gotten a half decent story, balanced competitive, and less of a grind, Destiny would have been one of the best games of 2014. As I describe it to my friends, it's a game that's partially great but bogged down by tons of mediocrity.

Surprised not to see it mentioned on here, but I didn't play that many new games last year, the only one I did was Shadows of Mordor, and I found that it was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Thoroughly enjoyed it and wish I had a playstation here in Germany to play it on, because my laptop doesn't have the specs.

Didn't play any bad games this year, because I tend to be pretty picky and do a lot of research before I buy anything!

Best game this year for me was Dark Souls 2.

It wasn't a patch on the first game in terms of atmosphere, level design or lore, but I still sunk way too many hours into it.

Honorable mention goes to Spelunky on the PS4, because it's equal parts fun and addictive.

I agree. I was thinking about comparisons to other games, and the closest I could get to was Castlevania 1 and 2 (on the NES! Bear with me here..)

The second one is a great game, I've sunk lots of hours into it and enjoyed a lot of them, but it's lacking a certain.. something of the first game. As much as it's a bigger game, the graphics and sound/music are awesome, it doesn't feel as 'tight' an experience as the first one. A kind of 'less can be more' thing I suppose!

I was dissapointed with spelunking being the ps plus game for that month. Tried it though and it was suprisingly fun.

My, that's a good question. We played 40k more often during the summer and late fall, and, surprising, each time, the bad guys won.

Not sure I have a best or worst for 2014, though Destiny is easily the Most Disappointing.

My personal 2014 list

Top 5

1: Last of Us Remastered

Best decision I ever made. Mine was a digital download with my Xmas presents, and with PSN down I only got to play it for a grand total of 3 days of 2014, but it makes the top of the list for outstanding story and gameplay.

2: Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix
Huge fan of the series, and all the added content was just fantastic, alongside being able to play one of my all-time favourites on my new PS3, which unlike my first, is not backward-compatible with the PS2 game.

3: Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix (came out December 2013 but didn't start until 2014)

A great game with some new content, really challenging to platinum but rewarding to play.

4: Alien Isolation
Not as amazing as I hoped but certainly better than...that other one...

5: Dragon Age: Inquisition
haven't played but looks and reviews alone make it to my top 5

5: Aliens: Colonial Marines
Picked it up Christmas 2013 because it was down to £5 from £40, and like KH1.5, a broken PS3 meant I didn't start until March. I figured it couldn't be nearly as bad as people say, but damn was I wrong. 4 minutes into it and haven't looked back. Wasn't even able to trade it in to GAME for store credit (they offered £0.04 store credit!)

4: Grand Theft Auto: Online
Same as KH1.5 and A: CM. Didn't play until 2014. Its a decent game, but lack of developer support and the awful online community, alongside the Rockstar moves to make you do microtransactions really messes it up for me, not to mention all the limited DLC and hackers, trollers and griefers.

3: Grand Theft Auto V
The story is fantastic, but like its Online version, the majopr issues come from not being able to make sufficient money, the extra limitations in garage spaces and abilities like Lester, Mechanic and Insurance were a real let down, and the tiny number of 5, scripted heists made it all a huge letdown.

2: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
I was looking forward to this game. Go tit for PS4 on Christmas and had the campaign done by Boxing Day. The campaign was good, but too short and slow-paced at times. The multiplayer is so unbalanced and the cooperate wave assault is boring and uninteresting compared to the likes of Extinction of Ghosts and Zombies of Black Ops range. Having loads of enemies equal to you is just too challenging on your own, and too easy in a group.

I'll second Divinity for most disappointing. NOt necessarily worst, jsut most disappointing.

I think we need to include a special mention for Best/Worst Developer Meltdown for Digital Homicide, developers of the much maligned Slaughtering Grounds.

Final Fantasy 7 is still the best game ever made. Just like Black Betty is the song of every generation, even ones that came before it.

Ha, man, if you're going to pick a 14+ year old game as the best of 2014, I don't think you've got much grounds to say anything about other people's choices.

It's also not a game of 2014, unless that post was made by time capsule in the late 90's with the forthcoming thread on Dakka in mind.

Not quite as bad a post as "I had a great game of 40k in 2014!", but close!

2014 was the year FF VII (along with most of the series) was released on Steam. So it's not totally time travel related.

FFIV/FFV/FFVI were all better, but whatever.

IV was great. FFIV on the DS was my introduction to FF.

Hearing my roommate gripe about it, Destiny ended up being such a disappointment that I didn't touch it. Borderlands: TPS is the best for me, but as a HUGE disclaimer, I haven't had time for most new games, and have only had time to beat it once. So, I'm kinda going in with a skewed opinion. I can admit that.

Looking forward to MKX for 2015!!!!

I think the best game for me was Valiant Hearts. Not the greatest or most in depth gameplay in the world, but it struck a chord in me that few games have.
