Storag, I quickly went from lurk to fan. Found this thread randomly. I am very impressed with your sculpts so far. I was thinking an aztec themed sm army a while back but instead started SoB. I'm glad I did, cause your stuff would have made me cry. No hate. Keep up the great work.

Ok, while I'm empty with ideas on one front I've been doing some cross-species surgery and ready to show the first results. Meet the Synapse Syndicate's first gear!

Pics contain both before and after versions

SS M001 TH Mk1 Tactical Helmet
While Tau's FW combat helmet provide considerable protection it was designed to compliment tau sensoric system and thus offers limited visual awarness. The SS TH's wide-screen visor is equiped with advanced tactical HUD interface to provide superior combat performance for humans. It is also re-designed for human phisiology and is a part of all-enviroment suit of armor.

SS M002 TA Mk1 Tactical Armour
Tau's FW combat armour was designed for mass production, alien phisiology and habitable enviroments, SS agents must have the ability to operate effectively in any situation so the top-edge enviromental control system was added to the basic tau design making even deep space missions accessible to SS agents.

SS M003 AAP Mk1 Additional Armour Plating
Utilizes basic tau design adorned with SS "Synapse" emblem and additional energy redistribution circuits for incrised systems stability.

I think it's obvious that with this army I want to bring some true sci-fi high-tech to the poor 40k humanity and if it's a bit Mass Effectish so... it's intended Never better than commander Sheppard!

Wanna hear what you think about my breeding experiments

NOW i am very confused...very confused...

the sculpted additions and conversions look very good... the helmet with the screaming mouth... that looks very cool and even strongly menacing...

the side stripes i am atm not able to understand... but i think that´s not needed^^

the asymetry of the otrso is a nice fresh thing... the vent on the shoulder... i like that feature...

also i like the synaptic icon... recognizable and cool looking... the angular look makes it fresh too...

nitpick with the whole army idea... you will due to simplicity for making writing easier way too often use the ss abrevation... there is bound to be some "disturbance" around that... better find a way around that... if you catch my drift...

other than that... we will hopefully see many more of these fighters... and i like the fluffy explanations!!!

Thx Vik =) Confusion is my goal I want people to look at these guys and think; "Hey, that's tau! Oh,... wait a minute..."

The helmet is something I'm rather proud of. The very concept of a helm that hides face and eyes but leaves the mouth open is imo a pure win for regular helmet of some army because:
- it is an element of unification, something that show that this guy is just a nameless grunt without specific character, a gear of war to say so
- there is also a psychological element to it, something terrifing and awe-inspiring like with Robocop or Judge Dredd
- but the mouth section allows wide array of facial expressions which is a good way to customise your grunts and make each one unique
The stipes are there as a part of futuristic design to visually separate the hard shell parts from soft underlay.

The fluff I always keep in mind when doing something, it just don't make sense otherwise

Ypu got a point with the SS abrevation... Maybe single "S" would be enough? But I personaly think that after more that half a century people should get ower it somehow...

and well getting over... as it seems... the germans pretty much got over the russians so to speak... (ok that was a bit rude and way too dirty...)

and the design also reminds me of the urukh hai

It's late night and I'm stuck at work... Nothing to do here and I'm completely bored, so I want to discuss an idea my friend Ish offered a while ago. He suggested that those Aztec marines could be based around CSM rules with few actual marines but lots of cultists. They could take slaves from the worlds they harvest to do all the mundane stuff and serve as cannon fodder at battle field. After all they don't have mechanicus or empire to supply them with servitors and SM aren't known for their affection to household chores...

So I've been looking through GW LOTR range (some times I love to think that I'll live to make a fantasy army one day ) and found some sets that have a potential to become such Aztec themed cultists:

What do you think about that idea and this models?

I can get behind that idea, but it will be interesting to see what the cultist rules are. It would be pretty sweet if they had rules like SW where certain squads can be lead by wolfguard (in this case, cultists lead by a CSM).

I like the first guys better, but they aren't from LoTR, are they? I haven't seen them before...

i am with rawson on the choice for the first pic... those ring a bell in me... definatly aztek cultist material... the others could work... but if you want to go cheaper... why not go real aztek...wasn´t there a company making aztek minis? or the wargames factory zulus? would these work?

I'm no pro on the rules so I'm open to any suggestions here as with this idea as whole. Such slaves seem like an interesting conversion project but do this army really need them?

All pics are of LOTR range. The first are called the wildmen of dhunadan or something like that. They really look tribal bit I'm not shure how to convert them.
The others are less aztec, more African, but I like their garment and already can picture how to make them in to a fine 40k guys without breaking the Aztec theme.

I could probably make use of both, making different cultist casts. Something like flagellants and a more organized, better armed units.

I'm no expert on 3d party miniatures 'cuz most of them aren't available in Russia but I would appreciate any useful links

if you use LotR minis the size diffenrence wouln´t even be too problematic... you could find fluffy reasons for that discrepancy...

Would save you the trouble of making true scale marines!

But the scale difference is a bit irritating: I wanted to use some LoTR horses for my Roughriders, but the scale was too different.

i thought as much... why stop at mere design when you can make true hulks in armor...!

and i too think that specially for such a small people as azteks this could work extremly well...

Why does all the cool stuff happen when I am work I like the second and third pics myself with a little work can become very Aztec.

Plus they look more human like as the first pic looked a little cartoony, the scale on some LOTR minis are more drastic than others (why I don't know ) so be careful.

The idea sounds pretty cool and next to the marines will give them a more imposing look
