Hi all!
I've sold off a load of old vanilla SM stuff and looking to start a small Space Wolves force. Ideally want to start with about 1000 points and then build from there. Need some advice about what units to buy?
I'm thinking something along the lines of:
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf or Canis Wolfborn
Grey Hunters x10
Grey Hunters x10
Thunderwolf Cavalry x3
Long Fangs x5
Any advice would be much appreciated

TWC are a good shout, probably an auto-include for any competitive SW army.
I don't know a lot about SW despite having the Codex, but what I do know is that you'll want Transports for your Grey Hunters, either Pods to DS Melta near vehicles or Rhinos to move them up quickly while providing blocking line of sight cover to TWC.
Quick note, if you do go Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf and give him a Powerfist or Thunderhammer, make sure to agree with your opponent if it's S9 or S10. It's not clear rules as written (and it has been asked many times in YMDC, so it's best just to clarify with an opponent before you play)

Looks like you're on the right track for your core units. I think Canis's model is ugly, IMO a better option is to magnetize a wolf lord and then use him as a Canis proxy.
The other things that differentiate SW from vanilla SM are their flyers (which are some of the best in the game), dreadnoughts (who can get shields for invul saves), psykers (who have access to divination and tempestus), and special characters. Champions of Fenris has some cool formations for you elite troops.

Smaller GH squads and more TWC. LF are super bad with how many multishot cover ignoring weapons they die before firing a shot. It is better to take the points and invest in to flyers or drop pods for the GH.
minimum 5 TWC in every SW list.

Thanks I think you're absolutely right with the Wolf Lord Thunderwolf, it looks a lot better and gives me more options to load him out with and magnetize.
Perhaps then something like this for 1000 points:
Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf + Thunderwolf Cavalry x3
Thunderwolf Cavalry x3
Grey Hunters x10 with Drop Pod
Grey Hunters x5
Grey Hunters x5
Long Fangs x5

Delivery for the Grey Hunters is pretty critical, send ten walking on foot up the board and they won't last long. I suggest more Drop Pods.

Though one thing to watch out for is that the Wolf Lord is a resin model, and doesn't come with options by default (you need to scrounge bits out of other sets if you want to give him wolf claws).

You could make a Wolf Lord out of a generic TWCman. Just add some bling from your other SW kits.

30k Ultramarines: 2000 pts
Bolt Action Germans: ~1200 pts
AOS Stormcast: Just starting.
The Empire : ~60-70 models.

Not sure how it is in your neck of the woods but a pack of three TWC isn't that much more than a Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf so if it's not too much of a difference, just grab another box of TWC so you have two more mounted models to turn into either more TWC or an Iron Priest on mount for later if you want to expand a bit.
