...would people consider this a minor inconvenience or see it more as an annoying thing which usually is the case when it comes to proxying?
GW doesnt sell Heavy Destroyers, but upgrade kits instead. A Destroyer costs £10, and the upgrade £5.50 for essentially a longer rod. These are also only available from GW direct, making things even more expensive.
In light of all this, and the fact that you can field a triple H Destroyer squad instead of merely a 1 per squad upgrade, I think it wouldnt be too confusing to proxy a set of 3 as heavies instead. Thoughts?

Eh... not for me. Unfortunately the expensive rode is necessary to distinguish a H Destroyer from Destroyer. Why don't you glue a few more cylinders (cut from a sprue or just some random rode you got, like a small straw) on the staff, so the staff is thicker. And you can point the staff forward and paint it like a Gauss cannon? While this is gonna take some time, at least it tells your opponent what that weapon it's holding is.

If you only have the HDestroyers in your army then just say before we begin and its not a problem.
Gets a little confusing if you have 2 identical models each being a different unit
If you got them spare, use some different bodies from other units with a different gun (like the tesla destructors) and magnetize them

If you're only using Heavy Destroyers, I think it's fine. But as soon as you start mixing and matching, I need to be able to distinguish them at a glance.
Are there any 3rd party kits for upgrading destroyers? GW's upgrade kit is unbelievably overpriced.

Since the difference between the two units is a longer gun barrell, you should really make the effort to convert a few.
I've seen people split the Immortals Guass weapon and join the two barrells end to end to get a converted gun for Heavy Destroyers.

If you have enough destroyers just paint some differently to distinguish them as heavies. If you paint the rods in the gun they look very different from the green transparent plastic.
Really dislike the destroyer upgrade kit, the heavy cannon looks too thin and is rarely straight, whereas the normal destroyer gun looks awesome.

Just put a small magnet in the barrel of the regular destroyer's gun, take some spare gun barrels from a warrior kit, and plug the other magnet onto the end, VOILA, instant heavy destroyer that stands out enough from the base destroyer.
