GW has done it again. They're now shifting from hardbacks to softbacks several months after release, so if you dont buy your hardback codex on release day or soon after that, say real life gets in the way and you come back to the hobby half a year later, and you see your army has been updated, and you want to buy the codex - the hardback is no longer available.

Can you imagine what this does to people who have several armies and hardbacks for all the other ones and then - boom - one softback in between that messes up the entire display on the shelf.

Of course this is just speculation from my part whether the AM hardback version is now permanently out of stock or if GW will continue to keep hardbacks in stock, but I'll take a guess and say they wont.

Really?

You're going to pretend that the Astra Militarum book no longer being available in hardback now is "several months after release"?

Also remember that this isn't a situation where the hardbacks are being actively recalled and destroyed. If you want to find a hardback, you can find one. You just have to be willing to LOOK.

don't know why, though this is the most asinine complaint I think I have read today. OH NOES THE BOOKS SIZES ARE OFF death to GW how could they!

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

The AM codex has been out for 10 months. If you couldn't manage to pick it up in that period of time because "life got in the way" you probably shouldn't be playing 40k in the first place

Could be worse. You could have this nice stack of grey-spined paperbacks and then they could start switching everything over to hardbacks with a different size, spine colour, font, no more helmet on the spine...

Bahahaha.

I've been posting about this for over a month, and they STILL can't get it right!

It's not exclusive to 40k. It's both 40k AND Fantasy. Once they sell out of a hardcover's print run, they're shifting to softcover for the remainder. We saw it most notably with End Times--but we've also seen it with Tomb Kings.

On moon miranda.

I'm just sitting here wondering how codex books went from $20 to $50 and then back to paperback $40something in like...six or seven years....

IRON WITHIN, IRON WITHOUT.

New Heavy Gear Log! Also...Grey Knights!
The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

My shelf 'o 40k books includes things like the 3rd edition BRB, the 4th Ed Marine Codex, the 5th Ed Necron Codex, the original City Fight Codex (and subsequent Cities of Death), and then multiple 6th and 7th edition hardback Codex.

Suffice it to say I don't give two flying feths books "matching".

How is that worse? It's the exact same situation only in reverse.

There is no need for worry. There are at least 15 E-Bay listing for an AM codex, and there will always be at LEAST one. Watch, go search online for a 5th edition codex (even 4th) they are not that hard to find! This is not even a separate edition, Its just a different type of book.

Now if only forgeworld released its books in soft back too.

Gives me an excuse to own physical copies of the daemon books though.

To be fair, you'll still be overpaying for the soft backs. If that's any consolation...

Am not buying a soft back. I feel bad that other people will get their codex cheaper. If at least the army worked. An eldar player probably wouldn't care much.

Is that not a bit petty? What does it matter to you that someone else gets something you've already got and used a few euros cheaper than what you paid? Not to mention the fact that being paperback, it's arguably a worse product.

Do you also feel bad you buy an album or film when it's released only to see it cheaper a few months later in a sale?

This. Also Makumba you missed my point. My point was that whether you buy the hardback or the paperback you're gonna be overspending. They're priced far too high for what they are in either format. Also they're not getting the same product cheaper, they aren't getting the hardback. You would expect to pay more for a hardback. Just not as much more as GW charges.

The paperback AM codex is listed on the UK site at £25.
As long as the ebook version is the cheapest, I'm not too worried. I paid £21.99 for it on release, which it is still listed at.

It makes me laugh that when they went to Hardback they deemed hardback to be worth £10-15 more than paperback, but now they're going back to paperback the difference is only worth £5.

First print run in hardcover
Reprints in softcover

The reprints never sell as well as the frist run. Softcover reprints save GW money on printing, shipping, and storing them, and provides a lower, and hopefully more enticing price point for customers.

again, it's dumb to complain about this. I mean I read more threads complaining about prices than I should on this site, and the one time something can drop the prices, there is complaining? seriously, what do you guys want?

Yeah I don't think when people say things should be cheaper they really mean 'marginally cheaper for what is essentially an inferior product'.

I'd just be happy if they could at least keep physical books in stock, PERIOD.

The fact that books like Champions of Fenris are gone, and I mean GONE (can't even find one on Ebay), is obnoxious.

is soft cover really that bad though? takes up less space, can fit into more areas, still has the same contents. the idea that hardcover books are better than softcover ones is just false.

Well it's not false, it's an entirely subjective point, but I'd expect a soft back of a book to be cheaper than just £5 less than a hardback one. Paying £25 for a softback 100 page book is not my idea of dropping prices.
