I remember seeing it years ago and being blown away then i forgot the name of it or who painted it. I searched it out a few times but couldnt find anything. Today i was checking out coolminiornot and it poped up again. i think i will need to buy this model.

I know that this is not a GW sculpt but the model reminds me more of the aesthetic of warhammer fantasy back in the late 90s.

it reminds me of a much better looking version of these old gw wraiths.

do you like the olders models or the new ones? Do you think gw is going in a good direction with the look of the models?

some new ones for comparison

The Hexwraiths are not a very fair comparison pic.
You should really be showing the Cairn Wraith, which would be far better looking than any of your previous pics in this post imo.

Here's the Cairn Wraith. Those '90s sculpts were horrible at the time and haven't improved at all.

meh, it is not bad. that one i can tolerate, it is much better than the hexwraiths at least. it still just looks like some generic undead from world of warcraft though. i guess the fans of today are only impressed if something is either floating or on fire or both?

check out this old blood dragon model. look at how much character it has. they just cant make them like this anymore. it's not stupid or overdone, it actually looks like a vampire, it's simple and yet great.

"The fans of today"? I'd hazard a guess that I was painting miniatures when you were likely still wearing nappies. You might want to try being less offensively arrogant, especially when there are people here who will inevitably predate you by some time. Those 90's figures you linked are gak, and I was there when they were released. Which is not to say that all of the figures of the 1990s were awful, because they weren't - but the general design of GW and their followers (Heartbreaker, Haqlequin, etc) weren't a patch on the stuff that came earlier, and in many cases, what came later (in many cases much later) as well. Which is again - not to say that everything released now is all rainbows and unicorns, but the mid-late 1990s were a particular low point for GW for many of their lines when ugly replacements for far superior lines were created - undead, dark elves, skaven, chaos dwarves, chaos (warriors and daemons both - the beastmen were very good, though). I'm sure there are a few more, but my point has been made.

Ridiculous, insulting, blanket statements arguing that all old models are better, or insulting "the fans of today" do you no favours and just make you look silly. These figures are both "Krell". You can keep the awful older model, I'd gladly grab the new/current version instead.

Some of the new WHFB isn't too my taste in terms of its aesthetics - lovely looking sculpting, but it's turned up to 11 in terms of undead beasts made of skulls, riding a wave of fire etc. I guess it fits the setting that Fantasy has moved in to, away from faux-historical renaissance and towards something of its own.

That newer Krell is awesome though.

If this is a thread for cool undead miniatures though I will gladly oblige!

yeah, i've been collecting Citadel minis for 30 years, and i look back at all my sculpts and think, "man, the nostalgia for the old days is way overrated"...
i am a way bigger fan of today's minis, like that new Krell, or the new plastic Karl Franz on Griffon, or the latest box of Tactical Marines...

GW has never had an undead model as cool as the OP's model, in my opinion...
Rackham, on the other hand, did...
Enigma has a version of Death that i like even better than the OP's example, the best version out there, i think...
all stuff from later than the year 2000...

i'm glad there are some people out there with nostalgia for the old days, because i have boxes of old minis to sell off, while i continue to enjoy painting the new stuff...

cheers

lol, i knew someone would pick one of the few things that doesnt suck. Yes, new krell is good, old krell is not that bad though honestly.

i like krell and isabella. but even new krell is more than a couple years old. when was new krell released? if he is like 5+ years old it kind of just furthers my point.

im sure the next krell will be either floating or on fire.

I noticed the new tacticals have slightly more rounded cartoonish looking features. to me personally, they were nothing special, just more of the same. marines have not changed much since the late 90s.

The quality of some of the new marines seems to be way lower than their predecessors. old sternguard look so much better and have so much more character than new sternguard for example. I wont go into the fact that they were finecast, because that's a different debate.

@kb305: obviously, i am not going to change your opinion, but understand that your idea of what is crap is not going to be the same as my idea...
just because you like something better doesn't make it true for everyone...

i have the old metal Sternguard, and Vanguard...
then i have the new plastics...
the new plastics come with way more options, and much cooler weapons...
two or three of the metal Sternguard have a really cool pose, but they are not all perfect poses, in my opinion...
same goes for the Vanguard...
i would much rather have the wealth of new weapons that come in the new plastic boxes...

the new Tacticals are a little more straight-legged, and again, have way cooler weapon and pose options than the previous box...
the new Blood Angels Tactical box makes me even happier...

say what you want, but understand that even some of us 30 year veterans can appreciate the evolution of scale (like the size of the new Bloodthirster) and style (like the new BA Marines) coming out of the GW design studio...

cheers

New Krell isn't 5+ years old.

I'll list a few others for you. I'll take the new plastic Bloodletters or the original RoC:StD ones over either of the interim models. I'll take the Diaz Daemonettes over all others, with the originals in second place and the new ones in third, with the mid-90's ones being at the bottom of the pile. Newest Forge World and original 1980's chaos dwarves over the 90's big-hat versions. The newest Skaven and the original and 4th edition Jes ones beat out everything that came in between. (Morley?) New/current Dark Elves are either equal to or superior to the original Naismith ones, not quite as nice as Juan Diaz' ones, all of which again kick the arses of the Fitz' ones which in turn are again better than the (Morley again?) 1990s' ones.

Really, a dismissive and arrogant attitude paired with what appears to be a spotty amount of knowledge isn't going to win you this particular argument with any of this crowd, though I will happily agree with you that the model in the OP is a lovely one indeed. I've got plenty of the older Citadel models, from the 1980's through to today's ones. I'm very fond of a great deal of the of the older models in my collection, and I'm quite aware that my like of many of them is down to nostalgia - and just as aware that some of them still beat out most of today's equivalent sculpts (most of Jes Goodwin's Champions of Chaos models haven't had anything come near them until recently, with only a couple from the 90's being in the same league - with many of today's sculpts only now becoming worthy contenders and successors (though without the variety of the originals).

Marines have indeed become nicer since late 2nd edition/3rd plastics. It's very incremental, and some of it is merely excessive bling, but it's there.

So I'll repeat - arguing that modern figures are almost all inferior as though you have any kind of authoritative knowledge while at the same time being demeaning or insulting towards others is pointless, since all eras have had great and awful figures. It's inevitable with a range as wide as Citadel's output using dozens and dozens of sculptors over a period of 30 years. There are of course general qualty trends through each era, and the mid-late 1990s was unfortunately one of the worst overall periods as great models were replaced with poorer sculpts (such as your wraiths) - which have at least by and large been replaced by better models. Often more than once.

@Bubber: that guy is nice, but i still prefer Enigma's The Old Death over all the others i've seen...

http://enigmaminiatures.com/shop/massive-darkness/the-old-death.html

@Azazelx: i'll concede the point to you about some of Jes' old Skaven and Chaos Champs, even though i am only enamoured with a select few from each line, like the pointing Skaven Champ with the jezzail, and the Bloodletter head Khorne Champ...
those guys rock, but then Jes has always been The Man, as far as i'm concerned...
i started my collection with the original Chaos Dwarfs, before the Big Hats, and still have them, but i much prefer the look and size of the FW versions...
i don't think Juan Diaz's Deamonettes have been, or ever will be, surpassed!!!
however, i am a huge fan of Fitz's sculpting style...

there are definitely a few timeless sculpts in every generation of minis...

I’m sure better painters then I could do a little more justice to those old GW wraiths then I did. I like them, they’ve got a hefty does of nostalgic charm. There are some old sculpts that hold up better then others though. GW’s ringwraiths from the LoTR line blew the old undead army ones out of the water.

As for the sternguard mentioned a few posts up, part of the loss of character with the new ones is the switch to multi-part kits. It’s hard to get the same feel from the mini when you need to break it down into compatible parts.

@Nevelon: i don't know...
i find multi-part kits to be a godsend in making better, more dynamic, modern interpretations of static old characters...
i guess it depends on the individual's approach...

here are a couple of my reinterpretations of older sculpts, using newer plastics...

I love the new multi-pose, but it's a lot harder to get some angles and body parts to work. One of my favorite veteran poses is a marine holding his bolter up high, looking down the side of it. While you can get a similar pose with plastics, the arms don't line up nice. One bit I love is the new arm resting on a sheathed sword from the sternguard kit. You don't normally see the arms doing anything but holding guns. In that vein, one of my favorate SoB sculps is sister badass pulling the pin on a grenade with her teeth. You don't get that in plastic.

@Nevelon: yeah, that Sister is my favorite...
the bolter aiming Vet is awesome, too ( i have him in metal, because screw Finecast)...
they did make that pose in plastic for the latest Tac. box...

the resting sword arm in the plastic Sternguard box is awesome...
i could have done without the tabard going across the MKVIII torso, though...
i do like the loincloth legs...
there always seems to be some little niggle in the majority of GW sculpts...
damn it!!!

my favorite metal Vet is the one with the MKVIII gorget, and the power maul...
i got one, but it was still a bummer to see him go OOP so fast...
love that guy...

the MKVIII Sterny with the power fist is pretty awesome, too...

the main thing, for me, is, it is much easier to convert plastic, so the out-of-the-box limitations are less severe...
i still convert metal to get rid of the little niggles i don't like, but it just takes that bit of extra work over plastic...

That first undead mini is beautiful.

It reminds me more of the stuff from the 1980's, which still leaned more toward natural proportions than the 1990's stuff.

That being said, the newer undead line is one of the few GW lines that has tended toward more natural proportions.

The newer line also is much more animated than any of the older lines.

The original miniature reminds me of Death from The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

Is that Tommie's first attempt?

It's stunning, but his version with the green sword is killer!
