So with no option to buy rough riders from GW what alternatives do you guys use? I don't really like the look of the WHFB models, and I figure I'd probably save money buying 3rd party and converting

The best looking RR-style models out there are the DKoK Death Riders.

I know you say you don't like the WHFB models, but I feel the Empire Outriders would make great Rough Riders with a bit of converting. They are beautiful models too.

Look at Vic Minis rough rider bits.
Buy some mounts that you like (any animal, monster, horse or anything you like)
and you can easily have whatever you want.

I know a guy who has a feral world IG with converted Cold Ones as his RRs.

I bought Empire Outriders with a combination of Cadian bits, greenstuff, and nails to make mine. I've got two of these units.
Poor pics but they compliment my Mordian Iron Guard models pretty well.

I used fantasy marauder cavelry. I covered up any chaos icons with shields that I had attached eagles to.
Added in las guns and magnetised a few arms in case i didnt want to use the spears/lances.
Gave them a very barbaric and feral look that works for them if your looking for something a little less "uniform".

My idea is to put guardsmen on WHFB O&G Spider Rider spiders. Fluff wise, they come from a death world where there are giant spiders that people capture and ride.

Admittedly, it was probably a lot more expensive than using some istoliers

Also, according to the fluff, Rough Riders defeated a necron army with a huge charge in a giant canyon.
They have their uses.
