Is it just me, or does the Xiphon Interceptor look like the Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper?

Either way, I still want one...

Just your imagination. After all, all GW models are completely original and designed in a vacuum with zero outside influences.

It’s the chiseled nose. It also has some very X-Wing elements I didn’t notice until someone pointed them out.

Still a very nice looking flyer. Much better then the dumpsters we marines normally flit about in.

Too bad the rules for it are horrible.

Uh what?

it has a 3+ jink, 2 twin linked lascannons, it's immune to melta, it also has a long range 2 shot S8 AP2 missile that gets to roll 3 dice on the pen table and pick the highest for each successful pen and it forces enemies to re-roll successful jink saves.

It can also get a 4+ inv against missiles and a 4+ save against crew stunned/shaken for 5pts each. It's a bit pricey for an av11 all around 2hp flyer but it can certainly feth some gak up. The rules are much better than the model.

205pts for 2HP, and the rest is just numbers. Check out the other threads covering the same subject.

For the op, no, it's not just you. That comparison has been made from the moment it was first teased.

It's possibly the coolest looking flyer Forgeworld have come out with in a while, though.

Yep. Which makes mine just as valid as yours.

I guess it depends what you are comparing it against. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as many of the other FW flyers, but most of the other FW flyers are much older, I'm struggling to think of much that has come out recently in the way of flyers.

Personally I don't really like it. It looks too much like a Viper from BSG crossed with a Lambda Class Imperial Shuttle from Star Wars but then made exceptionally chunky so it looks like a children's toy version of the love child of the Viper and the shuttle.

But maybe it'll grow on me.

Well, maybe the ones with players who aren't very good at the game . But seriously, 205pts!? I was guessing with that loadout it should be about 130-140 (a bit more expensive than a Storm Talon), and when people said it was pricey I guessed 170 tops. But 205?

It's very, very similar to the Crimson Hunter. Lots of Str 8 AP 2, but even with +1 to armor and jink, it's far too fragile for the points. No one plays Crimson Hunters, no one will play this.

A regular opponent of mine plays 2 crimson hunters, I'm currently building a xiphon and will be playing one.

I'm not sure how the rest of this is supposed to go, uhhh... do you even lift bro? No, wait, that won't do... uhhh, your argument is invalid. There, that's the one.

Yeah but you were implying that everyone agreed with your opinion in that other thread. I personally think it is too many points, though is a grewt flier otherwise (in theory)

I also think it's going to be especially sick for 30k.

A bit around the nose but I'm not seeing it. 2 engines vs 3, full wings rather than winglets etc..

Nah what gets me is that GW (through FW) is capable of making something like that but instead chooses to make things like this:

and this

It's like they're trolling us, like they're deliberately holding back and showing us what we could have had, if only we'd bought dreadfleet like they told us to.

I won't be getting the Xiphon, I'm not a fan of resin or FW QC, but wow, what could have been.

And really, the stormguppy was close to awesome. I find myself wondering if there were compromises made on the design in order to fit it onto the requisite number of sprues that made it sillier looking than the original concepts.

I'm sure someone plays them. I'm sure someone plays DE Wyches, too. Doesn't mean that Wyches are good, which was kind of my point. The crimson hunter looks cool, it's kinda ok but not really good, this is useable but super, super expensive and really fragile for what you get. It'll be fine for casual play, tournament lists will never use it. Why would you ever take this over a Fire Raptor or Storm Wolf?

The OP posted a picture of the 1970's BSG Viper. Comparing instead to the Mk 2 Viper from the modern series you could also say the nose through the cockpit is similar, though the wings are larger they share the same bit that protrudes forward (though on the Viper it makes sense because that's the gun mount).

I think it's just the overall shape though. The long nose, position of the cockpit and position of the vertical tail initially make me draw a comparison, then the forward protruding bits on the wing make me feel like inspiration was drawn heavily from the Viper.

All except the viper looks cool and this thing looks like a toy

You could easily slap a few lascannons where the heavy bolters are and just play the huge rotary gun as the missile launcher.

The pod fighter from Lost in Space! Loved that design, it's way better than the Colonial Xiphon.

The Xiphon shares design elements with the Viper, which in turn shares some with the X-wing.

Great model -the only fw space marine flyer I prefer is the fire raptor. As for the mainline GW ones, I wouldn't touch any of them with a barge pole -as Nevelon said, they're flying dumpsters.

Also bear in mind that it's designed really for Heresy-era games - you pay a premium for lascannons because everything has armoured ceramite slapped all over it, and flare shields make mobile lascannons especially valuable.

The other recent-ish fighter is the Primaris Lightning - I kind of like the look of the thing.

Nah, they aren't. It costs ~30 points more than the Vendetta and has stuff to show for it. It's actually decent at it's intended role. I'll take it over the Stormraven any day.

I don't find the model too great though. Will probably convert a DA flyer to act as one. They aren't great either, but I like them more than this one.

I personally think the design for this thing is so generic, it puts me to sleep. At least GW's marine flyers tried to do something a bit different, even if some of them turned out peculiar looking (the DA ones look good, and the Stormtalon/Stormraven front heavey design has grown on me, the SW shoebox still looks awful to me).

This one just looks like the FW designers google searched "space fighter" and combined elements from an X-wing and BSG Viper. No design creativity at all and just a boring model.

Like cause nausea upon viewing?

I know what you mean about directly copying elements. Though having sketched and modelled a fair few ship designs myself, I can tell you that it is very difficult to come up with something that's truly 100% original. A considerable amount of the inspration for my designs comes from studying shapes of vehicle and vehicle parts from a big library I keep of my favourite existing designs. Though in this case I will admit, the similarites are perhaps a bit too glaring.

Yeah, I do like the Xiphon, but it does look like generic space fighter design #158. For 40k, I expect something a bit more unique.
These are perfect examples of how 40k aircraft should look like:

Well that's the thing really, there's only so many shapes you can really use because only certain shapes will fly, efficiently at least. So you are a bit limited. I really like the Xiphon, probably my favourite flyer, definitely my fave SM one.

That Voss-pattern lightning is a stunner. It's a toss up between that and the xiphon for me.
