I was wondering if it was ever viable to purchase a Trukk and not start the unit in it. I mean not even have the capacity to do so. Then you leave the Trukk in reserve, and swoop in during a later turn to pick up one of your whittled down units.

Example: You start with a 30 Strong Boyz squad with Painboy on the field turn 1, and purchase a Trukk for them as a dedicated transport. The Trukk stays in reserve. Over the next 2 turns, as the Boyz move forward, the Trukk is safe from firepower in reserve. When the Boyz finally make it into combat, you bring the Trukk in to pick up an stragglers so they can get into another fight.

The idea here is to allow your downsized squads to actually have a meaningful impact on the game, instead of being target practice. If you can take out their AT by turn 3, then I think this can be a reliable strategy. What do you think Dakka?

For the guy who leaves it all on the field (because he doesn't pick up after the game).

Try it with models you have (or proxy if you can't)

On paper it sounds good, but (like my Tyrannofex), it could just fall flat on its face on the battlefield.

I think the main question to ask would be; could you spend those 35 points elsewhere that would have a better impact in battle?

35 points is pretty steep for an AV10 Open-Topped vehicle, even with Objective Secured, if you aren't using it as a delivery system.

I've used Rhinos like that before...buy them for units that will never use them...but that's mostly to screen Spawn units and nobody bothers shooting up an empty Rhino until it's doing obnoxious things on your objectives. The superior durability of the Rhino makes it viable...you can shoot a Trukk to death with bolters.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

If you have time to waste bolter shots on a truck, something has gone wrong for the orkses.

If that Trukk is sitting on an objective, those shots aren't really wasted.

The point is that it comes on when the squad is decimated to carry them around. Hopefully by that time in the game you've tied some of their stuff up, or you are close enough that it would be foolish to shoot at the Trukk. Then, when you lose half your Boyz squad to shooting, you can put them in a transport to get to the next battle without being target practice.

Why not just run 3 Trukks full of MANz missiles and, once they've disembarked and done their thing T2, load some Boyz into them if the need arises? Once those Meganobz have disembarked, your opponent is probably going to ignore the Trukks and, while they won't be Obsec, they'll have a use other than just waiting until your opponent kills enough Boyz to make them useful. If Obsec is your goal, then taking min squads of Boyz for the Trukks would get you Obsec Trukks while serving a real purpose.

In short - there are lots of ways to use spare Trukks more efficiently than simply deploying them empty.

New Zealand

I know it's legal to buy a trukk for a 30-boy mob, even though they can't ride on it (without first suffering a lot of casualties ).

But it it legal for the trukk to stay in Reserve while the boyz don't? I'd thought they had to deploy together...

It will take 13.5 rounds of shooting for a rhino to shoot to death a trukk with it's storm bolter.
Oddly enough, it will take the trukk 13.5 rounds of shooting for the rokkit to kill the rhino.

Guess they are both perfectly priced.
