Hey gang. I seem to have accidentally come into a not-so-tiny force of Orks, among which is a squad of Killa Kanz. I like the new kits a lot, but I find myself drawn to the older style of Killa Kan, like so.

Not to say that there's anything wrong with the new Kanz. The sculpt is REALLY good. But the newer ork models have a tendency to look too deliberate, if you follow my meaning. Like instead of the Kanz being bodged together from whatever is handy and hoping to Gork(or possibly Mork) that it works, the idea is that they were designed specifically to look that way. I think the two things that endear the old style of Kanz to me are

1) The Legs: The "robotic" legs from the new kit look a bit too complex and engineered for my tastes. On a Deff Dread they'd be fine, but fer Grotz? Fuggedaboutit. I think the piston legs make it look far more improvised and wobbly. This is easy to do, since the kit comes with legs like this, and I've managed to track down enough sets for a full skwad.

2) The Asymmetry: The huge klaw contrasted with the tiny gun give it a real sense of precariousness, like the whole thing is about to tip over at any minute. This is the tricky bit.

I want to make a bunch of Grotzookas for the skwad, but the current GW bits are far too big to mount like the old gunz. The next best thing I can find are the gunz below from Irondog Studios

I kiiiiinda like these, but I don't know. They are good, but slightly pricey, and I'm not 100% sold on them. I also quite like the conversion below

The Rocket Pod is slightly too big, but it does capture that sort of ridiculous overbalanced look I like. But the bitz are slightly hard to come by.

So thoughts? Ideas?

I don't know, I just held a Grotzooka up to one of my old Kanz and it looks pretty darn good there, mounted directly to the body like the older style weapons were. It looks about the same size as the Irondog bit, except maybe a little taller where the bin on top is longer (on the GW one).

If you like the missile pod look for them, you could try things like the havoc launcher bit from the Chaos Vehicle sprue, or bits from the Stormtalon or Land Speeder Typhoon.

I definitely understand your love for the older Kanz. I like the new ones as well, but the old style will always have a home in my army. Especially since having two units of the same thing that look so different is definitely the Orky thing to do.

I mount my Kan shooty weapons directly onto the kan 'torso' just like the old-school kanz - I've never liked the 'gun on the end of an arm' look.

Grotzookas are easy to scratch-build - you just need some plasticard tubes in a couple of sizes, and plasticard sheet to build a box with a funnel on top, plus rivets to hold it all together. And scratch-building them is also the easiest way to make each one unique.

I don't recommend using missiles to represent grotzookas - IMO there's too much visual similarity with rokkits.

For a smaller box launcher, you might also want to consider the deathwind launcher from SM drop pods.

I may try scratchbuilding, but in my experience the more complex I make a project(i.e. longer than an evening or so to convert or two or three sessions to paint) the less likely it'll get done. I kind of agree with you on the rocket launcher, but I think the Valkyrie one may be an exception to the rule, since it's rounder and looks like it covers a wider area of effect.

I actually found someone online who did just that (image below). I think my problem with the GW grotzooka mounted that way is the ammo hopper. There's a bit in between it and the barrel that makes it just a smidge too high. Maybe I'll see if I can't remedy that.

I must confess the look is kind of growing on me, it just feels the slightest bit too tall, half as tall as the entire Kan at that. Though it is a relief to find someone online who's done basically what I wanted to do already. Maybe I'll try lowering the hopper, or seeing if the bit between hopper and barrel can't be removed or shortened.

Thanks for the input so far guys!
