Hey all, so iv'e got a problem to do with exercising. Here's the deal, my PE teacher at school was in the marines and is like superman. He had shown me a few years back how to do press ups properly back in my first year of high school as i wanted to put some weight and muscle on me as i was a very skinny short boy. And since then, iv'e always done them right, along with other exercises. The problem is, iv'e been slacking lately and i want to build up my aerobic endurance and muscular strength again, but when i'm doing my press ups, my old teacher and new teacher say i'm doing it right and i do it the same as i see professionals. Yet all of the other students and my parents say i'm doing them wrong and that i'm "going too far down" and "it's dangerous" and "i can't even do that" and what is that".

So, do i do it wrong or right? or do i maybe mess up infront of other students? I'd be happy for any replies, but what could it actually be? any suggestions?

So without us being able to see you exercising, you want us to tell you if you're doing push ups correctly?

Interesting...

Going by the information at hand, I'd believe professionals over friends and parents.

sounds like amateurs are trying to give advice over experts.

do it the way your PE teacher and the marine did it.... lower down is better, you want to excercise the whole muscle.

so long as the excercise isnt causing you pain, or stressing your joints too much, you should be fine.

excercises with your own body weight are generally extremely safe to do in the entire range of motion, its really only excercises with weights where you ahve to be expecially careful not to engage all the weaker muscle groups that make up the entireaty of the range of motion for whatever part of you pbody they are working on

Do standard push up's correctly
When you cannot "properly" do them anymore go to your knee's and push correctly
When you cannot do anymore do the hover and sway to your left elbow and back to your right elbow. Slowly

Back STRAIGHT, breaking the plane of your shoulder blades. Head straight and looking forward......yada yada yada

Anyone that was in the Marines is going to know what a proper push up is, anyone that tells you differently is full of it. Pretty much any current or former member of the military is going to be intimately familiar with proper push ups and sit ups and it's drilled into them at boot camp, especially in the Marine Corps.

My old karate teacher was a Marine Corps drill sergeant and man that guy was built like a rock and it was all due to basic Marine fitness training, you don't need all sorts of crazy stuff to get incredibly fit, if you bring the will power, the body follows.

Deeper pushups with larger range of motion? Yeah, that's getting stronger and better work.

Military pushups will have you lower your chest to within an inch of the ground.

Hoo-ah!

Note that one can get a ridiculous amount of work with just your own body weight.

Regular pushups too easy? Do them one-handed. Still too easy? Do them inverted. When you have the strength and balance to do a one-armed inverted pushup, then yeah, you'll need extra weight. Even a crossfit junkie is challenged there.

That girl is functionally a lot stronger than you are likely to be in the immediate future...

I watched a video of how to do proper push ups by Mark Twight, and yep, you go down low (I touch the floor doing mine). I wasn't small before but I've built up muscle and toned a lot doing these push ups and I don't even do that many but I alternate doing 10 push ups then 10 squats until I can't do any more.

Inverted push-ups are entirely different, mechanically, from "regular" push-ups. They target different muscles.

As to the picture you posted: that's probably a pose.

Do you see and feel the results in the muscle groups you want to target, or is it getting your heart and breathing up in the manner which you want? If so, you're doing it right. That's the general rule of thumb with any weights, including body weight exercises. Also, trust professionals over nobodies.
To take it into other sports; If Michael Jordan showed you how to dribble or shoot in basketball, and some idiot in the stands told you different...
If Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Maradona taught you how to play football, and your high school maths teacher said you were wrong...
If Chris Kyle, R.I.P., taught you how to take the wings off a fly from 500metres, and your local neckbeard said you were holding the rifle wrong...
If Paul Walker, R.I.P. and Vin Diesel pimped your ride and taught you to drive and drift those corners like a boss, who is your driving test instructor to argue?

Again, do five hundred pushups a day. When criticized, throw 100 lb weights at them until they see the error of their ways.
