Hi Guys,

I've got my little brother-in-law into 40k a couple of years back, and now he's starting to build his own army.
Being all of 12 years old he just wants as many powerful units as he can get his little hands on.

His birthday is now coming up and his mum has asked me to look into some new units for him.
He has been drooling over for the Dev Centurions for the longest time, so I was thinking that would be a good starting point.
I know DC's are super-costy and many believe them not to be worth the points cost, but as when we play we tend not to play with points, I don't see it being an immediate issue.

My main question, then, is to give him a shooty and flexible transport, I was thinking of pairing them with a Stormraven for him so he could load them up with grav cannons and amps, then drop them close to my Termies for his twisted pleasure, before the SR flies off to pester my other units.
From your experiences, does this sound like it will be endless funs and lols for him, as that's what I really want to achieve for him here.

As mentioned, with power, he already has assault termies (also good for the SR), vanguard vets, a ven dread (which can also hitch a ride), a tac squad with a las cannon and a librarian - So some extra dakka would be nice for him
I will also be giving him an OOP Termie Captain from my stash that i'll be painting for him as a centrepiece.

Thanks guys and gals

Grav Centurions are really good, particularly if your Librarian can roll on Divination. Not many can, so worth checking your chapter tactics and special psykers.

Not sure if I'd recommend putting them in a stormraven, but it is a good model.

I was only thinking of putting them in there to prevent them from getting shot up early, and to be able to deliver the relatively short range of the Grav cannon to a more appropriate position.
If that fails, then fill it with the assault termies and laugh as my units of thousand sons die en masse?

You can stick Centurions in cover and they should be fine.

24" inch range and Slow and Purposeful means they can easily find range.

T5 W2 2+ is quite tough to get through if you don't have the weapons to do so - and GravTurions can easily remove threats to them.

In regards to the Stormraven as a Transport...I don't recommend it for assault troops. It might not come in till T4 at which point the battle is usually over. You also have to Zoom first to get into position, then Hover, then assault the next turn. You're waiting until T3 to actually get into combat.

I used the same combination of SR and Grav Cents. But actually it is almost all my list built around this combination, i.e. At 1750pts, 3men Grav Cent with Tigirius, loaded in SR. Rest of the army backbones are 3 droppod two of which has locator beacon to mitigate deep strike scatter when attempting "sky fury" out the passangers of SR. Such combination work from time to time. It had murdered Pask's LR and his squadmate, Daemon Princes (since Tiggy casted Perfect Timing) in just one round of shooting, and I would not doubt it could drop an old Wraith Knight in one round as well. But it fell to 30 orks and LotD in other games.

This combination do have restrictions. First, although the Tiggy mitigated the reserve roll problem, it restricted the movement of SR. As you will need to fly through some points within 6 inches of the droppod. While still get itself a good target to not to waste its own firepower. Sometimes it is just very hard pressed to find such an ideal place to land.
2nd is related to the droppod unit itself. It will usually carry short range weapons like melta and flamer. So the pods will usually be very close to enemy. Thus the Cents will land near the enemy as well. Usually not more than 15inch. So if it cannot kill its target. It will be tarpitted in combat for the rest of the game. If they are not killed in combat outright.

Who are these people who believe them to be a waste of points? Something tells me you will see them as an issue after you get them for him though...

They are going to be a MASSIVE issue.

And they are a waste of point according to some tactics articles I found.. and of course the neck-bearded wisdom of 1d4chan - I should probably take 1d4chan opinions with an extreme grain of salt, though...
