There is absolutely no need for this flag to be represented.

I'm just perplexed as to why it is represented.

It doesn't make sense to me.

If some strange ultra-proud socialist type fellow that fully embraces the idea of an unified Europe because he doesn't read the news very often, he may want to simply refer to himself as European and have that flag instead. Also, if you are self-loathing like so many people are, you might prefer to say you are "European" rather than British, French or German. (Ben Affleck would certainly apply here if he was European)

I suppose he is perfectly entitled to do so.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

what's funny about this response is that most socialists in europe are critical of the existence of the EU, as is. Whilst right-wingers like to pretend that the EU is a socialist organisation, the actual truth is that EU is explicitly a capitalist organisation, in that exists primarily to facilitate trade between the nations and to ensure that trade is standardised and centrally controlled so that trade is protected from potential socialist governments attempting to regulate it. only in england (unless you're really a complete fascist nutjob) is the EU seen as being a left-wing organisation, but that's because england is more right-wing than most european countries, so things look different here!

thinking about it more, it's liberals who love the EU most. most right-wingers can't tell the difference between liberals and left-wingers though. that said, there;s still plenty of good things that the EU have given britain. i jsut dont approve of any organisation that seeks to take power and wealth from the working classes and give it to the bosses and toffs.

How is the EU flag attached to accounts? I mean do users have to ask for it or does it throw itself up as an "else" where users are from certain disputed regions and what not?

Sorry, just attempting to salvage something here. =P

This is what I'm thinking but everybody else decided to point out the triviality of it.

It thought it was pretty curious as each member state has its own flag.

I think the tone of the initial post pretty much created the atmosphere for ridicule. There is a slight difference between "how does a user end up with the EU flag" and "there is no need for this flag". OP sounded very much like a "how dare this evil flag show its face here *hiss hiss*" kind of post, at least to me. Which is why I responded pretty light hearted.

Maybe someone is posting from the EU headquarters!

Edit: that first part sounded more assholish than I intended. Sorry about that.

Probably because it seems like a remarkably trivial thing to complain about.

It's an internationally-recognised flag for an internationally-recognised region of the planet. Is there any particular reason to not include it?

It's not like having it in the database is chewing up excessive amounts of valuable storage space.

Just you watch. When Texas finally secedes from the rest of the USA Frazz will want his Texas flag. And at that point in time it will be determined that the EU flag is taking up that little bit of space needed for the new Texan flag.

Only time will tell what the fallout will be.

To be fair, at least it was a question, a have wondered how you manage to get it, because I dont recall choosing, I suddenly had a stars and stripes when I came over here, and It changed when I occasionally posted travelling about in Europe on its own.

Maybe it would have been better phrased like "How do I get a Euro flag next to my name?" but it is a question that people may occasionally wonder about.

fething hell, I have seen worse. How many times a week do the Nazis get a mention?

Do we have starts on many times a week "Nazi" is used? That'd be something i'd like to see.

There are ways for a mod to "force" a particular flag for a user, but the default rule relies upon IP address at time of posting. (I've got a few posts lying around with China & India flags, courtesy of business trips.)

So, not likely to come up.

I suspect Lego grabbed a set of flag icons from somewhere. Personally, I'd like to see someone post with a Vatican City flag, or maybe Christmas Island. (Sure, I could force it to happen, but that would be cheating.)

Illuminati paid me to add it.

The flag is set to match what it detects your IP as. Lots of EU ISPs share blocks of IP addresses which means some people cant be classed as being anything more distinct than Europe as the country detection code lacks the granularity needed for better. Hence, EU flag. Canada sometimes gets the same problem with US IP address sharing, but gets the US flag displayed.

Reading this thread has me curious.

Has anyone ever requested the EU flag specifically instead of their home country?

Has anyone ever requested a Confederate flag? Is there a Confederate flag?

How often have you had to change flags when a country breaks up, or gets acquired by another - like, does a Crimean user now have a Russian flag?

Also, is anyone flagged for North Korea or Somalia? I feel like you answered this once before but I forget the answer.

Yeah Lego posted a list one time of all the countries users had last posted from (IIRC one of them was NK). If you want to go through his 341 threads to find it be my guest.
