I'm looking to add some transport vehicles to my space marines at some point. I like the look of both models and they seem to have fairly comparable stats.
It's decades since I played 40k, so I'm virtually a newb. What are people's experiences with these units? What do people recommend? And which of the models is the most fun to build and paint.

There's a lot good to say about the SR IMO, but it sucks as a transport.

The Stormraven is an amazing unit, but you never EVER want to transport stuff in it. Its a gunboat, the transport capacity is a trap.
If you put stuff in it, you're putting probably upwards of 500 points in a fragile AV12 transport. If you're only having 200 points of shooting platform its much more cost effective.
Land Raiders in general are undergunned for their cost, and too slow to be an effective transport.
If you want transports, go for actual transports like Rhinos or Drop Pods.

I like the idea of cheap CC scouts hopping out the back of a SR, and running towards an objective. If the unit is destroyed, it's no big points sink, and they auto pass their required dangerous terrain test.
Haven't tried it yet in a game, since I'm waiting for the Scouts...

I think both are rather poor in 7th. The SR fails as even a gunboat because of its price and reserve status.

Yeah, neither is ideal. They are both too expensive, are not super flexible, and get reliably killed by cheaper units.
I happen to like the Stormraven model more than the Land Raider model; and in some factions (like Blood Angels) it's your only Skyfire.
3x Storm Ravens are cool if you're playing Angel's Fury in a high point game, though

If it dies while flying the passangers all suffer S10 ap2 hits from the crash which generally kills everything inside.
If it's not flying it is going to die.

Reserves. The LR is on the table going from turn one, the Stormraven could be waiting until turn four if you roll badly and then the folks inside can't come out and charge until turn five.

SR if aiming for the lower point games (1500 or less). I have GKs and have never transported anything and use it as a 'hard to hit' weapons platform. It will change a game, as you will see from the last video of Strikingscorpion82 batrep against Night Lords... (on you tube). Two rock up, drop a terminator squad, Death company and two dreadnoughts, then promptly blow up a LR (first shot) and Predator.
Would be useful having both for the upper points (1850+)
But first purchase... SR... and I say that due to the increased Melta stuff that the opponent will bring... Just the bain of any LR!

You got very, very lucky. The SR usually is NOT a game changer, due to its poor dakka/pt/game turn. Not being available the entire game just kills it for me.

I know it is not a Stormraven, but I have been using a Stormwolf with the Landing Pad [With "Ready for Take Off"] for some turn 2 Powered Armored Wolf Guard or Blood Claw Assault Goodness.

The SR was my go to in the previous GK Codex. the ability of the mindstrike missiles was not to be over-emphasized. add to that, the ability to keep my warlord out of range of my opponent's forces was an entertaining tactic as well.
When trying not to be a troll like me, the SR generally comes out ahead in the currrent environment. Just as I did with valkyries and vendettas when I played guard, if you have a bubble ability the SR allows you to get it just about anywhere on the board that it is needed. A librarian with the 6" psychic hood? Kantor's +1 A aura, (do Sangiunary Priests still have their 6" FNP bubble?), etc.

Yes, this has happened to me in a few games now where I haven't been able to get the thing on the table until turn 3 or 4, which means I can't get anything assaulting out of it until right at the very end and sometimes by that point it is too late. Having said that, I have had more success in games with Stormravens than landraiders due to the distance/speed they can travel around the table. I have my stormraven fully kitted out for a barrage of bullets with the TL assault cannon, hurricane bolters, TL multi melta and the missiles. MM and Missiles are used on enemy flyers/tanks/big stuff and the assault cannon and hurricane bolters can absolutely devastate enemy troops, especially when those Hurricane bolters get into rapid fire range and combining with the assault cannon.
Having said that, my experience is limited as I have never faced more than one enemy flyer or come up against strong anti-air stuff.

Poor old LR. I *love* the model, it's a beast, but its damage output is just poor. If only it actually had four lascannons and two heavy bolters.
LRC, now, that thing is worth running (with a multimelta). Put hammernators inside, trundle up the battlefield, kill squishy stuff.
I had a game against DE a few weeks ago... I won because his huge grotesque blobs couldn't damage my AV14 obsec-troop carrying tank. The occasional glance got repaired by a TFC gunner. It was hilarious.

I love chucking in my Ironclad dread onto the back of a raven if im being nice and not taking drop pods.
Pretty fun with a 5man THSS charging two units out of 1 bird.
With the mass amount of haywire nowadays its also a little safer i think vs the LR

I was planning on using it for Terminators, so I guess the compromise would be to Deep Strike them and use an SR as a gun ship? Still love the look of the LRC and LRR's though.
Oh and to get some drop pods for some of the other troops or something.

Terminators have terrible long range weapons period, and terrible mid-range weapons considering the cost of the squad. Storm Bolters are awful weapons for elite/heavy. Certain varieties like Assault Terminators with thunderhammers or Deathwing Knights can do a lot of damage in cc, but hey have such crap mobility that barring something like Assault fro Drop using the BA formation, you never actually GET to cc. Most of your points will be flushed down the toilet before you get a single hit in.
On that topic, you're forced to take powerfists on every unit, meaning that you have no cheap cannon fodder to remove as the unit gets whittled away.
Also, they are supposed to be nigh invincible warriors, and they were 20 years ago, but now they die to tons of stuff.
For the same purpose, you're better off with assault Marines in a pod or rhino with melta or plasma,or death company with jump packs, or sanguinary guard.
TLDR: Slow moving, crappy at every range other than cc, dies too easily, and expensive.

Cyclone radius was HUGE; you could wipe out something very important to your enemy in T1. They were always pretty good against small arms fire, and in the early days of 40k, when people played mostly infantry (few vehicles), they were decent units to field. They were fun when Genestealers first came out, when Imperial Guard meant essentially just lasguns, and when a Squat bike was a novelty. Now, they are just nice models that make me feel like a sad panda. For a real flashback, here are what the first Terminators looked like http://www.spikeybitsblog.com/2015/03/40k-flashback.html

No, it doesn't. None of those units can dominate because they are very inefficient. For example, I have won many games against triple Land Raider without ever killing one of them. They are that bad.
Likewise, I have taken all anti-air out of my lists because flyers in general are inefficient in 7th.
Terminators don't do well against standard infantry weapons; AP 2 is not needed.
