The book "works", it's just more or less a case of working in ways that leave you in fits of hysterics, and then crying a little on the inside at how horribly awful the internal balance is...
Take Tzeentch for example - you'd probably assume that being the God of Magic & the changer of ways, that his forces would easily be the best wizards in the army, right? Well, you're 110% wrong, as Tzeentch is the outright
worst of the entire lot!
Horrors are pretty much 'Warlocks -11' and due to their awful magic lore, are only ever really usable as minimum sized units that rely on ensuring two of those units end up with Gateway and Firestorm... the other unit(s) are just chaff/speed bumps for the most part.
Khorne's units meanwhile for the most part are outdone by all the other Gods... the only thing he had going for him are the Khannons and the new Bloodthirster variants. Otherwise, anything a Khornate unit can do, at least two other units do better, and typically for cheaper too.
Bloodletters for example? Don't bother. Plaguebearers can grind away most anything, while Daemonettes fight better, are much faster, AND cheaper to boot.
Bloodcrushers? Plaguedrones are miles better, can ignore chaff by simply flying right over them, and are laughably cheaper as well! Their only drawback is being a Rare choice, but then, if it's just pure hitting power you're after, Beasts are in that same Special slot as well, and are about a million times better than 'Crushers in every way.
Flesh Hounds? Their only shtick is their Ambushers rule. But then, we also have Seekers, Furies, solo/double Beasts & Screamers as well who can all easily fulfill the role of chaff hunters and/or annoyance units.
Then there's the shared issues of how our General &
BSB work, (or rather, don't work!), our complete inability to gain protection on our characters, (especially harsh on Heralds), and the aptly named Reign of Comedy table which tends to go slightly worse for you than it ever will for your opponent.
Overall Daemons play better as an
MSU army. Big units outside of Plaguebearer bricks and 6+ Beasts are just awful pts sinks. If you enjoy
MSU style, then Daemons work, (provided you don't mind ignoring Khorne and Tzeentch to a lesser extent)
'Nurgle Wall' is a solid list as it simply won't ever die outside of Purplefun bombing, and adding Epidemius makes it truly nasty.
Slaanesh + Beasts/Khannon is the current go-to "Tournament" list due to how Slaanesh can bend Elves over backwards with his magic lore. (Caco Choir is easily the game's most broken spell!)
It really Khorne especially and certain Tzeentch units who are left out in the cold.
On the other hand, Daemons are one of the best balanced books in
40k, and 9th is coming which (hopefully) means a new army book is on the horizon to help fix the current major issues we have!
If you love the models, then go for Daemons. If you really want to do Khorne/Tzeentch, then you simply need opponents (especially Elves of all flavours) to dial back their lists in order to get a better game.
