I'm wondering if I actively want to tailor my list against the strongest units in the game if there are wraith knights lurking out there that I will end up playing against in the future. By that I mean taking my farsight bomb and jamming as many fusion blasters in it as I can with monster hunter and twin-linked and going to town. Who do you think would win if I deep strike in front of a wraith knight turn 2 with a farsight bomb. Could it potentially kill this massive behemoth? What if he has a 5+ invulnerable save+ feel no pain? The most I am thinking of is 7 dual fusion blasters, farsight's plasma rifle, a buff crisis commander giving twin-linked and monster hunter, and a maximum drone squad of 16 all dropping shots into the wraith knight.

Well, the math is pretty straightforward. Markerlights means you hit on 2's, rerolling to hit, with 14 shots. That's 13.61 hits. 4's to wound drops that to 6.8. He then rolls his 5++, taking 4.54 wounds, then rolls FNP, reducing it to 3 wounds.

Hopefully, you land right at 18" and you get a good jump move so you don't get counter-charged.

Assuming my standard setup of Shadowsun, Farsight, a separate buffmander and then the bomb of 3 plasma suits, 2 fusion suits and two MP suits, as well as 16 gun drones it sound indeed kill a WK on average (or well, 5.98 wounds caused if it has the invulnerable save) unless it has 4+ cover. This assumes everything is in range though, and you will have used roughly 1100 points to kill 300. It could still survive with a litttle luck, and even if it doesn't the rådata retaliation fire would probably cripple the bomb.

EDIT - This is assuming no markerlights. With two on the knight, the odds change in your favour.

You should be more afraid of ~330 pt of wraiths in a serpent that would fry your 1100 pt like no big deal. Focusing on a wraithknight is a loosing tactics. It's like focusing on a riptide. But worse.

Probably best to isolate the WraithKnight and kinda kite it if you can. it seems pretty beefy, like an IMperial KNight only harder to kill.

Your forgetting that the farsight bomb will have 16 gun drones as well. They hit on 2's with twin linked but they wound on 6's. Still that is 32 rolls that on average will cause about 5 wounds rolling on 6's.

Also everything has monster hunter the fusion blasters will have rerolls to their wounds as well.

With Monster Hunter you'll probably delete the WK, but... how much did the bomb cost? It won't pay itself killing 1 Wraithknight and will be exposed to the Eldar army... :/

That is true that a single wraithknight costs about 3/10ths of the point cost of the farsight bomb but getting it out of the way would be priority #1. Priority #2 would probably be wraithguard. Especially if they are armed with d scythes. But with split fire I believe the death star can take out either its transport if they are in one or part of the squad if they are on foot.

Kill the Wraithguard first, then the knight. Knight is 2 shots. Guard are Templates.

That said, with D-weapons a plenty in 7th I think DeathStars are dead (no pun intended). You'd probably have a better chance with MSU and overwhelming firepower.

Doesn't help that the WK is undercosted but barring a FAQ what's done is done.

That is actually a tricky situation because if you kill the wraithguard you are left to be assaulted by the wraithknight and then stomped but if you leave the wraithguard unattended then it will fry the squad with templates. I think the more logical solution is to go after the wraithknight because the wraithknight has full strength d weapons and stomp which is also a d strength attack.

I don't think the deathstar is "dead" it just has to change its strategies and loadouts.

Stomps aren't D. 1 is nothing, 2-5 is S6 Ap4 per model, 6 removes.

Yup. Farsight bomb can deal with Stomp, but not with D templates

I know stomp attacks aren't d strength but its basically the same principle. A 6 to roll on the stomp table is actually worse because it will take out everything within the stomp blast. A 6 to roll on the d table will take out a single model in the unit. A much bigger difference.

You dont want to even consider taking a 1100 point unit against eldar. If you DS in before his Wraithguard, your unit is dead.

No scatter DS+6" disembark+6" run means those templates will be exactly where they need to be to do maximum carnage.

And a 3 from Wraithguard will take out a Crisis Suit.

Its not just the Farsight bomb up against a full wraith list. Look at my list first and tell me if I can compete with an eldar wraith list:

Tau Empire 7th edition Unbound army list: 2000 points

HQ:
Commander Farsight (Warlord): 7 Bodyguards:
7 Dual Fusion blasters: 7 Target locks= 634 points
Crisis Commander: Vectored retro thrusters, Drone controller, Iridium armor, Multi-spectrum sensor suite, Command and control node, Puretide engram neurochip, Onager gauntlet, Neuroweb system jammer, 16 Gun drones= 360 points

Elites:
Riptide: Ion accelerator, Twin-linked SMS, Early warning override, Stimulant injector= 225 points

Troops:

Fast Attack:
7 Pathfinders= 77 points
7 Pathfinders= 77 points

Heavy Support:
3 Broadsides: Shas’vre: 3 Twin-linked HRR, 3 Twin-linked SMS, 3 Early warning overrides, 6 Missile drones= 292 points
Sky Ray: Twin-linked SMS, Disruption pod, Blacksun filter= 131 points
Sky Ray: Twin-linked SMS, Disruption pod, Blacksun filter= 131 points

Fortification:
Aegis Defense Line: Comms relay= 70 points

Total: 1997 points

The point of this list is that everything in this list can harm a wraith knight. The plan is to take out the transports for wraith guard first with HRR's and seeker missiles and then focus on the wraith guard inside. Next turn drop the farsight bomb in and take out the wraith knight.

Its totally tailored and Howling Banshees are going to eat you but sure.

I think its a lot of work to try and fend off a VERY particular list.

I wouldn't want to offer to play a game against eldar unbound.

Howling banshees are the least of my worries and I'm just saying as a hypothetical that if I played this list could it go toe to toe with an Eldar Wraith list. I actually played a guy with two wraithknights and tied the game on objectives and kill points with my Farsight bomb when he was playing the 6th edition codex. I took out both his wraithknights with ease and managed to absolutely obliterate his wave serpents and the flimsy dire avengers inside. This list can work against those units. I know it. And I feel like its difficult to say that it won't work without proper play testing.

Problem is you are tailoring a 1000 point unit to take out a 295 point unit

OK its not just for killing the wraithknight. It would never make up its points that way. Its designed for killing wraithknights/guard in wave serpents, eldar jetbikes, anything that is incredibly powerful and needs to be taken down quickly.
