Unlike Transformers(let's be honest, it wasn't the worst thing Bay has done), TMNT was pretty fething awful. Interestingly though, Michael Bay has gotten hold of Stephen Amell (Arrow) to play Casey Jones..

I didn't think tmnt was that bad.

It was an entertaining Michael bay movie aimed at kids that made nearly $500MM worldwide.

Why are you surprised about a sequel?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

If Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was your childhood, it was likely long destroyed.

Star Wars trilogy at release, Indiana Jones, FASA games, old GW, Duran Duran, Adam Ant, electropop, 70's Punk, 80's hair, playing outside all day alone and unescorted prior to the paedo scare.
That was a childhood.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

My childhood held up pretty good against the Bay produced TMNT movie. But that is probably because I remember the 3 movies, the live action tv show, the live action musical stage show, the cartoon(s), the video games, the digital movie....and realized the Bay produced isn't even close to being the worst thing done with the TMNT name.

Incidentally that caused me to enjoy the movie for what it was. Instead of holding it to a standard that never existed in a I.P. designed to make money with minimal effort.

Edit: However I did come to this realization after hours of therapy ( ) coming to terms with the Bay transformers. Turns out the Transformers I.P. has been mostly just a cash grap from the start. But it sure felt like my childhood got destroyed at the time. Though I still refuse to watch the 4th movie and still rave about the animated movie lol.

Yes. The Bay movie was really not that bad at all. I've loved TMNT since I was a kid and I enjoyed it. And honestly, when you compare it to some of the stuff that's already been made (like the aforementioned live action musical) it's definitely not the worst bit of TMNT, by a long shot. I'm not surprised there will be a sequel and as long as it is just decent I'll be okay with it.

I thought TMNT was good enough for what it was. I am fine with a Sequel being in lock-step with the quality of the first one. It is a strong kids franchise and the movie did good things for TMNT.

If bayformers was a large departure from the cartoon 80s source, Bayturtles was really close to the campiness and general silliness of the showturtles so it got a pass with me.

If anything, I could have taken the bayformers designs if they had stuck to the corny Western shootouts of the 80's cartoon first season where the autobots basically just ride in to town and kick the crap out of decpeticreeps for no justifiable reason and then go play basketball outside a volcano. That would have been totes fine with me.

The main issue I have with the first Bay outing of TMNT, was the swiss army Shredder and the Foot Clan. Awful.

Any worse than Uncle Phil in a co-dependent odd couple set up with a Nagging Pink Brain in a down syndrome robot suit with robot foot clan ninjas?

I mean when you boil it down, Swiss army Shredder being a legitimate crime family concept which moved with technology isn't that awful when you compare the source material. (not talking about the OG comics which were awesome... But you also gotta remember the archie turtle comics where the turtles became intergalactic space wrestlers by issue 25 as well which was mainstream as hell...)

I guess it shows us how good the first Live Actions really were in setting expectations... Macguffin makes turtles, actual martial arts happen and then they ninja dance and end the movie on a 'funnie'.

There is not much about my childhood that can be destroyed, and what there is would certainly not be TV-shows.

Anyway, do you know what Michael Bay says to you? While the critics says I'm evil, got no time to read reviews, 'cause I'm working on the sequel!

Oh good lord. Stop taking things so seriously. While the Transformer films were pretty god awful TMNT wasn't nearly on the same scale. I won't pay for it in theatres and encourage his movies to be made financially but free from the comfort of my couch they are good for putting on while I paint or build miniatures on a Saturday morning, like the cartoons they are based on As for destroying my childhood it's more in reference to the crap we watched as kids (but LOVED back then) as to my actual childhood. Pretty sure you knew that or maybe I didn't emote enough for a slightly less serious tone.

He was kidding. It's a common turn of phrase to refer to remakes that aren't as bad as the originals that we recall (idolize, even) in memory as "destroying of childhood". It's a joke.

Despite the story being utter blech, his movies do have some sort of ability to entertain beyond that, as someone who didn't care for the original TMNT, it wasn't too bad.

The only problem I have with Bay remaking making stuff is his treatment of source material and long time fans. Yes his movies make money, no doubt, but I would argue they would not suffer noticeably, if at all, if he treated the franchises with a bit more respect.

I don't have to watch his crap movies and I don't. Nor do they diminish the stuff I like. The only real frustration I have is that while Bay is being handed the franchise there exists no possibility of a really good film being made in that franchise.

Did you miss the 90's cartoon? Or the live action movies? (Particularly the latter two?) The source material hasn't been treated with respect for a long time (as much respect as you can give such a ridiculous concept, at any rate).

I still haven't seen the first TMNT film (it's not on TV yet, and I'm not giving Bay cinema money).

But... I think I was always kinda ok with him doing the Turtles, it kinda fitted his style a bit more. - I have quite fond memories of the Ninja Rap, for example.

The Transformers films though, I've had so, so many problems with and still have.

How much money must the original creator of the Turtles be rolling in? Lightning was definitely caught in a bottle with the concept.

I believe he may actually be talking about the early 90s not even a "B" movie Captain America film.

TMNT made almost $500m in worldwide gross. Can anyone honestly, genuinely wonder why they’re going to make another one?

As much as people like to think that growing up playing with a certain toy, or watching a tv show means you have some kind of entitlement to that brand forever more, you just don’t. The creators have no obligation to look after your sensibilities. The creators, or whoever the creators sold the rights to, have actual ownership of that thing, to do with it as they please, and that almost certainly means they are going to try and make money off that property. That’s life and it’s always been that way.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I'm not referring exclusively to TMNT here. Nor is Bay the only culprit. But there's always things that could be done, little nods to the source and fans, which Bay seems to eschew for reasons that elude me. I've said it before but Transformers (and the first TMNT) felt extremely superficial when they didn't need to be.

Look at the first of these films. There is no real connection between Shredder and Splinter/the turtles. The entire backstory of Oroku Saki and Yamato Yoshio is ditched. The turtles and Splinter have no reason to even know of, let alone give a damn about Shredder. That narrative isn't modified, it's completely gone. They're now ninjas literally because Splinter found a book on ninjitsu in the sewers (Though as on friend said, if they can throw around 10 ton shipping containers and are bullet proof martial arts really aren't all that necessary.) There is no way that's better than even the 90s cartoon take on their origin.

Sure, this sequel will make money. But the above Casey looks like another superficial character. It would be hard to do less.

I've never really understood the whole 'destroying my childhood' thing... If the original is so precious to you, surely you can just go and watch that instead? How does someone making a new version of it have any effect whatsoever on what came before?

I think there is something important people I think people are forgetting. There is a big sweet spot of people my age. 18-25. We grew up after the 80s cartoons and when it is popular, or have small memories of it.
So, we are possibly the biggest consumers of movies, along with teenagers(so they know nothing) and have ZERO baggage of the francises, so to many the "Destroying our childhood" is not applicable, these are what the MB are appealing to.

I don't hold much of a grudge against Mr. Bay for the movies he has done. I do question his judgement when using these I.Ps.

The 1st Transformers was pretty okay. It had too much human in it but it was the first time I saw the Transformers on the big screen so it didn't bother me too much. Look to T2-4 and the Transformers take a back seat to the humans. Nobody is going to a Transformers movie to see Shia or Walberg not even Fox. Children don't care about those characters and arguably no adult does either.

TMNT had a lot of human in it too. Nobody cares about Megan Fox in a TMNT movie. Children don't care and neither do adult. Hell most of the adults seeing a TMNT movie are there because they want to see Ninja Turtles.

Bay needs to make characters like April much much more insignificant in importance and screen time. Its like going to see The Avengers and having to sit through 2 hours of Agent Coulson watching the Avengers kick butt. You go to an Avengers movie to see Hulk smash Captain throw his shield and Loki act like Tom Hiddleston. TMNT is about the Turtles first and foremost.

But I hear Bebop and Rocksteady are in TMNT 2 so I guess we have that going for us.
