Going to soon get some paint to highlight black. I am wondering what Citadel paint do you use to highlight black?

i use black-dark reaper-white personally, but i am expanding into other colours. if you want to get technical you should google warm and cold colours. basically if you use most blues to highlight your blacks you will have cold highlights, and if you use colours like reds you will get warm highlights. its quite a complicated subject, but if you want a good result, layering up with dark reaper will give you a good black highlight.

Depends heavily on what you're painting black.

Cloth can be done with dark greys, blues, or greens. But anything with a reflective surface (metal, glass, that sort of thing), you'll have to do a minimum amount of pure white highlighting to denote the reflections.

I have had good results with skavenblight dinge, brushed with longbeard grey, then keep applying thin nuln oil washes until the skavenblight is black enough (the white of the longbeard will still show through). You can put 'ardcoat over that to make it shinier if you want a metallic look.

Skavenblight Dinge or Dawnstone for me. Light enough to hint at the highlight without being overpowering. If you want the model to pop a little more then a light grey such as a Longbeard Grey drybrush or Elf Grey (not sure on its exact name now). Personally I would avoid using white on black as it creates too much of a colour contrast for me, but that's just personal preference.

With this mini I only used Skavenblight Dinge on the pure black areas, as I wanted it to look dull and matte without detracting from the lava. If Talys makes it online sometime soon he does a good black powerarmour highlight, take a look at his Death Company mini for last months painting challenge.

+1 for skavenblight dinge, you also could do a custom mix of skavenblight/eshin mixed with a bit of abbadon black

Black is a great to highlight. The short answer is "almost anything bright". Whatever color you choose will change the perception of the black (unless you use grey). For instance, add moot green, and your model will feel like it has a green glow.

This is what a highlight of dark reaper, and then a second (finer) highlight of Fenrisian Grey looks like:

Or paint it grey and hit it with black wash until it is dark enough that the main body of colour is black.

What kind of highlighting?

You can use white straight on black, if you can do very fine edge highlighting. (Use a 000 brush with some retardant mixed in so the paint does not dry before you can get it on the model).

If you want area highlighting some kind of coloured glaze can be good.

I personally use grey with a heavy blue tinge to it (the old Shadow Grey GW color, which is currently called The Fang, to highlight black.

Here's an example of what a good edge highlighting looks like (Drybrushed on, then cleaned up afterward).

It gives the black a cold feel, which I like. You can do a further edge highlight of a brighter grey or even touches of white if you prefer, just depends on how much shine you want your black to appear to have.

Hope this helps.

Take it easy.

Mixing pink or skintone colours into the black usually gets you a good lookign grey shades for highlighting up the latter colour, I've found.
